Recession OR Not … You Decide?

A ME-P Reader Opinion Poll

DEFINITION: NBER defines a recession as “a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months.” That definition encompasses a range of economic factor but is based on three main criteria: The depth, diffusion and duration of a downturn.

Former Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan recently said a US recession is the “most likely outcome” in 2023 as the central bank tightens monetary policy to curb inflation.

Performance Coaching for Doctors? [A Voting and Opinion Poll]

On the Need  for Coaching Medical Professionals

Join Our Mailing List

Like some other folks, doctors may benefit from having an objective, outside consultant or coach advise them on how to maximize their medical practice and/or personal performance.

In fact, it’s becoming a popular service, particularly as the ACA, market volatility, heightened insurer and patient demands, and profit pressures are challenging physicians in ways that may not be familiar to them.

But, not all coaches are created equal. What is a coach? What are the risks and benefits? Is this a real need or perceived marketing ploy in a time of tumult?

Q: And so, should doctors hire a performance coach?

ELECTIONS: Money and Markets

Historical Review

By Staff Reporters

***

***

Now that the voting is behind us, it might be safe to start checking your portfolio. In recent history, stocks have only gone up after midterm elections:

  • In the year following every midterm election since 1950, the S&P 500 has risen—no matter which party won.
  • A divided government, which could happen if the GOP retakes at least the House, delivers the best market results: Data going back to 1932 shows average annual S&P returns of 13% when there’s a GOP-controlled Congress under a Democratic president, compared to 10% when Democrats have both, per RBC Capital Markets.

Why?

There’s some debate, but partisan gridlock can be advantageous for business because it minimizes the chance of major changes to taxes or other laws that impact companies. It also doesn’t hurt to have the uncertainty of the election in the rear-view mirror.

Right now however, investors are more focused on the FOMCs’ rate hikes in response to inflation. While politicians from both sides of the aisle have criticized Jerome Powell’s recent decisions, he’s unlikely to change course due to the election outcome. Plus, economists seem pretty convinced the US is headed toward a recession, regardless of who’s in control in Washington.

Great Depression versus Great Recession [A Voting Opinion Poll]

Join Our Mailing List

Yesterday versus Today?

The Great Depression is often compared to the 2001-08  Great Recession. There are some interesting facts when comparing the Great Depression to the Great Recession. It may even be considered scary when laid out directly in front of you.

The cause of the Great Depression was because people were borrowing too much money, unlike the Great Recession where the banks were lending too much money irresponsibly. Don’t forget that what was once a recession turned into the Great Depression because of unemployment rates reaching 25%, bank failures covering half of all banks, and more.

Both Roosevelt and Obama have used “wall street bankers” as a scapegoat.

POLL: Should the Government Pay for Health Care?

A VOTING POLL

Most young people say gov’t should pay for health care
[By Staff reporters]

Most young Americans want any health care overhaul under President Donald Trump to look a lot like the Affordable Care Act signed into law by his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

But there’s one big exception: A majority of young Americans dislike the “Obamacare” requirement that all Americans buy insurance or pay a fine.

In fact, a GenForward poll says a majority of people ages 18 to 30 think the federal government should be responsible for making sure Americans have health insurance. It suggests most young Americans won’t be content with a law offering “access” to coverage, as Trump and Republicans in Congress proposed in doomed legislation they dropped on March 24. The Trump administration is talking this week of somehow reviving the legislation.

NOTE: Conducted Feb. 16 through March 6, before the collapse of the GOP bill, the poll shows that 63 percent of young Americans approve of the Obama-era health care law. It did not measure reactions to the Republican proposal.

HOW DO INVESTORS REALLY FEEL ABOUT STOCK MARKETS?

Art

By Arthur Chalekian GEPC

Individual Investors (AAII) surveys investors weekly about whether they are bullish, bearish, or neutral on stock markets for the next six months.

Last week, the majority of participants indicated they were neutral. There was less bullish sentiment than the previous week, but bulls maintained a slight edge over bears:

The Results

  • Bullish: 27.2 percent
  • Neutral: 47.1 percent
  • Bearish: 25.8 percent

Assessment

The AAII also asked whether participants were better off, worse off, or as well off as they had been eight years ago (early in the Great Recession). More than one-half (54 percent) said they were better off. The remainder was almost evenly split. Twenty-four percent indicated they were not better off, and 23 percent said they were as well off.

But – Will He Succeed? [Opinion Poll]

RMRobert McDonald has been nominated as Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and will turn his mind to the aftermath of conflict and the 9 million former American service people enrolled for care.

If confirmed by the Senate, he’ll succeed Eric Shinseki, a retired general who resigned last month amid explosive charges of mismanagement, falsification of records and a toxic culture that left patients waiting indefinitely for treatment.

Earlier this month, the acting head of the agency confirmed that 35 veterans left off a list died before seeing a doctor, perhaps as result of the delay.

Dear Dr. Marcinko and ME-P Readers and Subscribers,

The University of Delaware is conducting research to assess medical provider attitudes towards applications “Apps” in healthcare settings.  Mobile devices hold great promise for reshaping the “time and place” where an individual receives care. This study is almost complete.

  • Opinions on the integration of apps into the Meaningful Use program
  • Characteristics important to users when downloading an app
  • Assessing desirable pricing structures

Invitation

I’d like to invite you and your ME-P readers to provide feedback on how you leverage Apps in the healthcare setting. The research instrument should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and all responses are confidential. The results may be published in a scholarly journal or industry research publication.

Respondents should be:

  • U.S. Providers, Physicians, or Nurses
  • IT Staff involved in Health IT and mobile decisions

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Thomas Martin (PI) at trm@Udel.edu,tmartin@himss.org or 412 992 1285.

Should Dr. Marcinko Speak in Malaysia?

Information Sought on Laures International

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™

[Editor-in-Chief]

Recently, I was pleased to be invited to speak at a Regional Public Workshop [RPW] for the healthcare clients of Laures International, in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. I don’t know if  I’m personally that famous, infamous, or our newest book is just garnering rave reviews.

“Healthcare Organizations” [Management Strategies, Tools, Techniques and Case Studies].

In-Process from: (c) Productivity Press 2012 http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781439879900

The Firm

Briefly, Laures International is touted to be at the forefront in organizing strategic business intelligence in Asia and Middle East with headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. As of 2011, they’ve supposedly held events in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, China and Dubai.

Goals and Objectives

Representatives state their goal is to provide world class events with an uncompromising attitude towards quality. The aim of Laures is to provide a platform for delegates to be involved in discussions and case studies to enhance their understanding and to apply what they learn immediately to improve their performance when they return to their respective workplace. A worthy goal!

Offices

+603 – 78034444

www.LauresInternational.com

Assessment

Now, I like to speak and learn, and have done so frequently around the country and in Eastern Europe the last three decades. Usually, my presentations are for medical societies, financial services groups, pharmaceutical companies or other consulting firms.

But, Laures is heretofore unknown to me, and other than their contact and website review, I am concerned about their credibility. With all due respect, I’d frankly hate to be duped or ultimately “stuck” in Kuala Lumpur!

Conclusion

Your thoughts and comments on this ME-P are appreciated. Is Laures International credible? Is the region safe? I’d love to experience its’ culture, people, food, colleagues, sights, sounds and sites. Accept or not? Your ME-P crowd sourced experience and wisdom is appreciated.

VOTE-Would You Retain a Bankrupt CFP® for Financial Advice?

Join Our Mailing List

ME-P Readers Respond

Sponsored by: www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.org

###

According to colleague and financial advisor, Mike Kitces CFP®:

As the difficult economic environment continues, bankruptcy filings in the United States continue to occur at an elevated rate.

And it appears that financial planners are having their share of bankruptcies as well … requiring the CFP Board via their disciplinary process to adjudicate whether a CFP® certificant should receive a public letter of admonition, or has his/her marks suspended or revoked.

With a rising number of financial planner bankruptcies putting pressure on their disciplinary resources, the CFP Board has proposed a change to how it treats such bankruptcy situations. The upshot: a bankruptcy by a financial planner will no longer bar him/her from getting or keeping the CFP® marks. However, going forward, any bankruptcy by a financial planner will be publicly disclosed for the following 10 years on the CFP Board’s website.

Question: And so, as a doctor, nurse, management consultant or even another financial advisor, would you ever retain a Certified Financial Planner® who had declared bankruptcy?

Financial Services Career Evaluation [An Opinion and Voting Poll]

Would You Continue to Work if Financially Independent?

Join Our Mailing List

By staff reporters

Studs Turkel, in his outstanding book Working, made the comment that work is the mechanism by which many of us get our daily bread and our daily purpose.

If this is to be the case, then the modern financial services sector may need a lift to offer something more than a paycheck. This may especially be true when one considers the recent shenanigans on Wall Street, the slow decline of the broker-dealer business and product model – and considering that RIA, fiduciary and/or niche marketing models are slowly rising http://www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.org

A General Survey

The Wilson Learning Corporation surveyed 1,500 laypeople, asking “If you had enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life, would you continue to work?

Seventy percent said that they would continue to work, but 60 percent of those said they would change jobs and seek “more satisfying” work.

But more specifically, regardless of whether you are called a Financial Advisor, Stock-Broker, Wealth Manager or Financial Planner – how about you?

Assessment

If financially independent, would you continue to be a financial consultant [regardless of nomenclature]?

Is it Time for Level Life Insurance Commissions? [A Voting and Opinion Poll]

Ending the Churn-em’ and Burn-em’ Ethos

By Staff Reporters

Join Our Mailing List

Some insurance agents are currently noting that life insurance ownership is almost at an all time low because of the economy. And, some have even prompted suggestions that a “level commissions” payout would reverse the trend.

The argument goes something like this:

If agents were compensated 10% a year over a 10-year period rather than 100% in year one, annual reviews would increase substantially. The long-standing current method is not geared toward ongoing service, but to “churning” and “flipping”. Clients get better service from their property/casualty agents and wealth advisors because these practitioners have a financial inventive for their clients’ continued allegiance.

“Purpose over Pay” for Financial Advisors? [A Voting and Opinion Poll]

Salary versus a “Seat at the Table”
 Join Our Mailing List

Currently, there is much buzz in healthcare about physicians looking to take on greater leadership roles and move beyond traditional patient care responsibilities. And, there are many doctors with the inclination and ability to rise to the occasion; despite diminished salaries, fringe benefits and other financial incentives going forward in the era of health care reform.

The Financial Services Industry

But, is this the case in the [reforming] financial services sector in the era of Dodd-Frank, etc? Of course, physicians are a special class of “learned” professionals, and Registered Representatives [RRs], stock-brokers and/or related financial advisors [FAs]; not so much!

And so, do you think FAs are willing to delay immediate compensation gratification for a “seat at the leadership” table in their respective industry sub-sectors?

IOW: Are FAs willing to accept “purpose-over-pay” like some doctors and physician executives, today?

What are the Prospects for US Recession? [A Voting and Opinion Poll]

Is Wall Street Driving Main Street?

By Staff Reporters

Concern is high that the US economy may be close to or entering recession, yet the fundamentals lend little support to such a projection. There has been no decline in jobs, while corporate health is very strong.

So, the recession concerns appear to be driven more by the decline in stock prices than by economic developments.

eMR Privacy versus Healthcare Efficiency [A Voting Opinion Poll]

The Electronic Controversy Continues

By Anonymous

Medicine may be the last industry to resist the digital revolution as many doctors still use paper medical records.

Framing the Debate

Privacy advocates worry that if the move to eMRs is rushed, patient privacy will suffer. Supporters, on the other hand, argue that health information technologies have advanced to the point that such concerns are vastly overblown. Any loss of privacy will, they insist, be more than offset by efficiency gains. Who is right?

Will any privacy loss from eMRs be compensated for by commensurate welfare gains from increased medical delivery efficiency?

Doctors – Are You Preparing for Retirement [A Voting Opinion Poll]?

ME-P Voting Poll with Survey

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko FACFAS,  MBA, CMP™

[Publisher-in-Chief]

www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.com

As a physician-focused financial advisor, I know that for those medical professionals between the ages of 45 to 54, the thought of retirement should be popping up a few times these days.

And, for doctors between ages 55 and 64, the thought may be taking on urgent tones about now!

In fact, many of us are reconciling to the idea that it may be a fact that we have to either postpone our retirements or live a much simpler life during retirement. Whatever the thoughts may be, what’s driving them is our preparedness to retire.

And so, we’d appreciate your vote and comments, too!

A Poll on RECs

Five Reasons We Think Regional Extension Centers are Reckless

Hi Dr. Marcinko and all ME-P Readers

I hope you are doing well. I am hosting a poll about RECs on my blog at: http://www.softwareadvice.com/articles/medical/five-reasons-we-think-recs-are-reckless-1092310/#survey

I’m hoping to get as many participants as possible to make this a meaningful survey. I’d really appreciate your help spreading the word to your ME-P membership.

Digital White e-Paper

The poll coincides with an article I wrote on “5 Reasons We Think Regional Extension Centers are RECkless.” I’m excited to see progress of HITECH Act initiatives, but I’m skeptical that throwing money at the problem will lead to efficient and successful adoption of EHRs.

Assessment

It would also be interesting to read any anecdotes you might have about Regional Extension Centers. Please let me know what you and your readers think:

A Voting Poll on eMRs as a Balance Sheet Item?

A Real or Economically Stimulated Need?

Join Our Mailing List

Many doctors – and their CPAs – view an in office electronic medical record [eMR] system as a balance sheet item to purchase for a medical practice; much like any other piece of business equipment or medical instrumentation.

Of course, ARRA and the HITECH Acts also treat eMRs like an asset that the Federal government can motivate doctors to purchase thru their “meaningful use” economic stimulus and rebate program … sort of a social engineering fiscal health policy for medical professionals.

And so, the question for doctors really is: do you believe in eMRs as a stand-alone item above and beyond their rebate earning capacity?

THINK “cash for clunkers”, or the first time home buyer “mortgage credit rebate program”.

In other words, sans this Federal economic rebate program externality, would you purchase an eMR system despite the HITECH Act? Will you purchase one once the rebate period has expired. Are eMRs a depreciating or appreciating asset?

Please opine with your vote!

Hello Dr. Marcinko and all Medical Executive-Post readers. I hope you’re doing well.

The Big-Breaking News from Apple

You’ve probably heard the news that Apple is set to release a new tablet PC today. That got us thinking here at Medical Software Advice about whether or not this new device will be the first tablet PC to break through in the healthcare industry.

A Short Survey

So, we’ve created a short survey (8 multiple choice questions) about what tablet PC features are important to healthcare professionals. I’ll use the results from the survey to determine which tablet PC is best positioned to rule the halls of healthcare. Even if you’ve never used a tablet PC, we’d love to get your opinion on what features are important.

The Scott Brown versus Healthcare Reform Poll

The Sott Brown Opinion Poll

By Staff Writers

In what some pundits are calling the “Boston Massacre” in liberal Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown rode a wave of voter anger to win the US Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy for nearly half a century, leaving President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul in doubt and marring the end of his first year in office.

Our ME-P Audience

As a financial advisor, we know you are aware of the rise in healthcare stocks yesterday. And, as a medical executive or healthcare professional, we know you have been against the public option, and healthcare reform, in its current version.  The AMA is not your friend – nor does it represent you.

The Question Is?

And so, do you believe that last Tuesday’s Republican victory in Massachusetts means the current Democratic health care bill will not be on the President’s desk in 2010?

Survey Poll on Who Reads the ME-P?

Getting to Know You in 2010

By Ann Miller; RN, MHA
[Executive-Director]

The ME-P is growing in stature and influence, and we’ve been asked this question quite a lot recently. Truth be told – we have no idea – really.

The Silent Majority

Of course, we know the posters, and some commentators, but there are quite a number of readers who don’t interact at all.

Assessment

So, who are you?  Scouts’ Honor, now, and you’re only allowed to vote once. We’re not looking for any particular answer here; it’s just an unscientific survey that will help us select feature topics, and thought-leaders, for 2010.

Vote on Healthcare Reform

A ME-P Healthcare Reform Opinion Poll

By Ann Miller; RN, MHA

[Executive-Director]

According to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, the public has soured on President Barack H. Obama’s health care reform plan.

In fact, former Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean MD told Vermont National Public Radio:

“This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. And, honestly, the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill and go back to the House … You have the vast majority of Americans want the choices, they want real choices. They don’t have them in this bill. This is not health care reform and it’s not close to health care reform.”

Now, as an informed ME-P reader, do you think healthcare reform overhaul is a good idea?

To Par or Not to Par? [The Critical Question for 2010]

About the Medicare HIT 1115 Project

By Ann Miller; RN, MHA

[Executive-Director]

At least one iconoclastic physician, ME-P thought-leader Al Borges MD, has asked that all doctors unite and participate in this year’s Medicare “HIT 1115 Project”; now in-process.

The November 15, 2009 Project

November 15, 2009 began the 6-week time period during which all medical providers can switch Medicare participation. If all physicians become “non-participating” or simply “opt-out,” then lawmakers and their lobbyists may take notice that doctors are fed-up with government intrusion into physician affairs!

A Healthcare Reform Budget Deficit Opinion Poll

Deficit Neutral, or Not [You Decide]

By Ann Miller; RN, MHA

[Executive Director]

President Barack H. Obama just promised not to sign any health reform legislation that increases the federal deficit. This promise recognizes the rising public concern about a fiscal trend that, if left unchecked, could leave us with $19 Trillion Dollars in federal debt within a decade.

Of course, without the pledge, given the current dismal economic climate, health reform would be dead-in-the-water.

QUESTION: And so, is healthcare reform really deficit neutral?
