Did you Know?

Experts estimate that it can cost more than $1 million to recruit and train a replacement for a doctor who leaves the profession because of burnout. But, as no broad calculation of burnout costs exists, Dr. Tait Shanafelt [Mayo Clinic researcher and Stanford Medicine’s first Chief Physician Wellness Officer] said Stanford, Harvard Business School, Mayo Clinic and the American Medical Association (AMA) are further cost estimating the issue. Nevertheless, Shanafelt and other researchers have shown that burnout erodes job performance, increases medical errors, and leads doctors to leave a profession they once loved.

What’s in a Medical Practice Professional Name?

NAMING YOUR MEDICAL PRACTICE

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP

SPONSOR: http://www.MARCINKOASSOCIATES.com

***

***

A medical practice name should be easy to say, hear, spell, and remember-unlike prescription drugs. It should be appealing and resonate with your target patient base. Here are some common naming methods for small to medical medical practices use.

We, and most experts, recommend against naming a new medical practice with your own name because it limits future growth and you may lose the benefits that a more descriptive name would bring. Your business name will likely be incorporated using your practice’s name, although larger (multi-specialty group) practices may use a more general name for the entire enterprise; and then having multiple “dba’s” (”Doing Business As”) for the individual practices under the umbrella.

It is important to discuss these options with an attorney if you believe this arrangement has advantage; others find it confusing. Usually, your medical specialty can be used as a base-name, and then some
descriptor to differentiate it from local competing practices. Selecting a name like “The Medical Allegiance Partners” does not indicate that medicine is your service. On the other hand, naming your practice “Dental Associates of Your Town” won’t be helpful to patients looking for you in the yellow pages, or internet search engines, and finding your practice listed just before “Your Town Dental Partners”. It is therefore good to be cognizant of your competitors’ names when choosing your own.

MORE: https://medicalexecutivepost.com/2022/12/07/how-to-name-your-new-medical-practice/

And, you should select a name that will hopefully grow with you into a larger enterprise.

For example: You are a solo doctor, but are pretty sure you’ll take on one or more partners in the future? Then besides not naming your practice after yourself, you may choose to add “Group” or “Partners” to your name initially even if you’re the only doctor.

Moreover, is there any possibility you’ll open a second office in another town? Naming your medical practice something like the ”Apple Street Internal Medicine Group” may not make sense when your second office is opened on Main Street in a nearby city, in a few years.

Crafting a Medical Practice Strategic Marketing Plan

Necessary Today – Not So In the Past

http://www.MarcinkoAssociates.com

dem

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko; MBA, CMP™]

Invite Dr. Marcinko

Marketing plays a vital role in successful practice ventures. How well you market your practice, along with a few other considerations, will ultimately determine your degree of success or failure.

The key element of a successful marketing plan is to know your patients – their likes, dislikes and expectations. By identifying these factors, you can develop a strategy that will allow you to arouse and fulfill their wants and needs.

The Beginning

Identify your patients by their age, sex, income/educational level and residence. At first, target only those patients who are more likely to want or need your medical services. As your patient base expands, you may need to consider modifying the marketing plan to include other patient types or medical services.

Your marketing plan should be included in your medical business plan and contain answers to the questions asked below:

·Who are your patients; define your target market(s)?

·Are your markets growing; steady; or declining?

·How is the practice unique?

·What is its market position?

·Where will we implement the marketing strategy?

·How much revenue, expense and profit will the practice achieve?

·Are your markets large enough to expand?

·How will you attract, hold, increase your market share?

·If a franchise, how is your market segmented?

·How will you promote your practice and services?

Practice Competition

Competition is a way of life. We compete for jobs, promotions, scholarships to institutions of higher learning, medical school, residency and fellowship programs, and in almost every aspect of our lives.

When considering these and other factors, we can conclude that medical practice is a highly competitive, volatile arena. Because of this volatility and competitiveness, it is important to know your medical competitors. Questions like these can help you determine:

·Who are your five nearest direct physician competitors?

·Who are your indirect physician competitors?

·How are their practices: steady; increasing; or decreasing?

·What have you learned from their operations or advertising?

·What are their strengths and weaknesses?

·How do their services differ from yours?

Patient Targeting

Patient targeting generally describes the strategic competitive advantage and/or professional synergy that is specific and unique to the practice. Intuitively, it answers such questions as:

·Who is the target market?

·How is the practice unique?

·What is its market position?

·Where will we implement the marketing strategy?

· How much revenue, expense and profit will the practice achieve?

The science of modern marketing however, is based on intense competition largely derived from the interplay of five forces, codified in the early 1980s, by Professor Michael F. Porter of Harvard Business School. They are placed in this section of the business plan and include the following:

Power of suppliers: The bargaining power of physicians has weakened markedly in the last managed care decade.  Reasons include demographics, technology, over/under supply and a lack of business acumen.

Power of buyers: Corporate buyers of employee healthcare are demanding increased quality and decreased premium costs within the entire healthcare industry. The extents to which these conduits succeed in their bargaining efforts depend on several factors:

·Switching Costs: Notable emotional switching costs include the turmoil caused by uprooting a trusted medical provider relationship.

·Integration Level: The practitioner must decide early on whether or not he will horizontally integrate as a solo practitioner, or vertically integrate into a bigger medical healthcare complex.

·Product Importance: Increasingly, HMOs do not often strive to delight their clients and may be responsible for the beginning backlash these entities are starting to experience. Additionally, some medical specialties have more perceived value than others (i.e., neurosurgery v. dermatology)

· Concentration:  Insurance companies, not patients, represent buyers that can account for a large portion of practice revenue, thereby bringing about certain concessions.  A danger sign is noted when any particular entity encompasses more than 15-25% of a practice’s revenues.

Threat of new entrants: Some authorities argue that medical schools produce more graduates than needed, inducing a supply side shock. Others suggest that there too many patients? Regardless, this often can be mitigated by practicing in rural or remote locations, away from managed care entities, or in areas with under-served populations.

Current or existing competition: Heightened inter-professional competition has increased the intensity and volume of certain medical services and referrals may be correspondingly with-held.  Rivalry occurs because a competitor acts to improve his standing within the marketplace or to protect its position by reacting to moves made by other specialists.

Substitutions: Examples include: PAs for DOs, nurse practitioners for MDs, technicians for physical therapists, hygienists for dentists, cast technicians for orthopedists, nurse midwives for obstetricians, foot care extenders for podiatrists and even, hospital sanitation workers for medical and surgical care technicians.  Any strategy to ameliorate these conditions will augment the successful business practice plan.

Academic Metaphor?

Now, with all the competition today at the college and university level; notwithstanding the recent Hollywood Elite University acceptance debacle, can you see how these basic ideas might also be helpful in the academic and educational strategic marketing ecosystem?

The Emerging Role of University CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER

***

The changing role of a college / university Chief Marketing Office [narrow focus] –versus–  Chief Strategy Officer [broader entity focus].

Assessment

A good way to accomplish and codify the above marketing plan concept is through a SWOT analysis. Mention the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of your specialty specific practice and what you plan do to maximize the positive, and minimize the negative aspects of the analysis.

Conclusion

Only after the above forces have been considered, should you begin the process that many physicians mistake for crafting their marketing efforts; executing the actual marketing plan.

If you are not going to the right audience, making the correct statements or delivering your message through the proper advertising channels, you might as well put your medical practice marketing plan into the trash can because it will not secure you funds, or benefit your practice.

Do you have a marketing plan, and more importantly, how well do you execute it?

DEFINITION: One way to accelerate and support learning is with continuous up-skilling. A key component is micro-certification and credentialing, which is best thought of as learning that happens in smaller “chunks” — such as boot-camp training, an online course from a university or other provider, or even an apprenticeship.

When competency in a specific knowledge area or skill is demonstrated, a micro-certification is issued, which can be listed on a resume or displayed as a “badge” or a mastery credit on an online profile.

Over time, individuals can amass portfolios of competencies that characterize their capabilities in a way that is much more relevant to their professional lives than relying solely on academic credentials.

DAILY UPDATE: “No July SSI Checks for You”

Supplemental Security Income

By Staff Reporters

***

***

Stocks popped 2% this week, as investors expect the Fed to soon pause or dial back interest rates after the release of the June inflation report. Central bankers have raised rates from zero to over 5% since March of last year, a move that led the S&P 500 to shed 20% in 2022.

And yet, No SSI for you!

DEFINITION: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a means-tested program that provides cash payments to disabled children, disabled adults, and individuals aged 65 or older who are citizens or nationals of the USA. SSI was created by the Social Security Amendments of 1972 and is incorporated in Title 16 of the Social Security Act The program is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and began operations in 1974.

Individuals or their helpers may start the application for SSI benefits by completing a short form on SSA’s website. SSA staff will schedule an appointment for the individual or helper within 1–2 weeks and complete the process.

SSI was created to replace federal-state adult assistance programs that served the same purpose, but were administered by the state agencies and received criticism for lacking consistent eligibility criteria. The restructuring of these programs was intended to standardize the eligibility requirements and level of benefits. Although administered by SSA, SSI is funded from the U.S. Treasury general funds, not the SS Trust Fund. As of July 2022, the program provides benefits to approximately five million Americans.

CITE: https://www.r2library.com/Resource

The Social Security Administration gives, and the Social Security Administration takes away — at least when it comes to beneficiaries who qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.

July is one of the months when the agency doesn’t issue an SSI check. Because of a quirk in the payment schedule, SSI beneficiaries get two payments in March, June, September and December, while no payments are deposited in January, April, July and October.

FINANCIAL ADVISORS MARKETING: Meaningful “Tchotchkes” for Doctor Prospects

HDS

SPONSOR: www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.org

According to Wikipedia, a tchotchke is a small bauble, doodad, doohickey, gewgaw, gismo knickknack, swag, thingamabob, thingamajig, toy, trinket, whatchamacallit, whosie-whatsit, widget, etc. Drug representative, various trade vendors and even prospecting financial advisors that give such cheap souvenirs to potential clients are even sometimes called “tchotchke dukes.” This industry practice is well known and wide spread.

Value-Less

Depending on context, the term has a connotation of worthlessness or disposability as well as tackiness, and has long been used in the regional speech of New York City and elsewhere.

The word may also refer to swag, in the sense of the logo pens, key rings and FOBs, t-shirts, golf balls, and other promotional freebies dispensed at trade shows, conventions, and similar large events. Most are largely value-less promotional pieces.

Valuable

Medical professionals of all types are fertile prospects for pharmaceutical representatives, insurance agents, financial advisors and like minded vendors. Most of these commissioned salesmen offer tchotchkes to their doctor clients and prospects as a reminder of their wares.

Assessment

And so, wouldn’t it be interesting for these vendors to offer their doctors something of real value?  How about one of our Dictionaries of Health … in our series of three non-clinical handbooks? Affordable, memorable and valuable!

DAILY UPDATE: Workplace Productivity Down

By Staff Reporters

***

***

The US is experiencing the biggest decline in worker productivity since 1948, according to research from EY-Parthenon, and many executives have been quick to single out remote work as the main culprit.

This is what they cite to prove their point.:

  • A study published in Nature Human Behaviour found that working remotely made Microsoft’s remote workers miss important learning opportunities by not rubbing elbows with coworkers who aren’t part of their immediate team.
  • More recent research showed that interacting through a screen can make workers less likely to generate ideas. That’s a problem for tech companies needing to out-innovate the competition.

For many industry leaders, accessing a wider talent pool outside of traditional tech hubs isn’t enough to make up for those drawbacks. And as widespread labor shortages subside and layoffs sweep through Silicon Valley, companies are no longer in a perk war to recruit and retain the brightest minds.

Finally, the Big Tech office pushed mirrors broader thru white-collar labor market dynamics; according to Morning Brew. In December, 13% of LinkedIn postings were for remote jobs, compared to 20% nine months prior.

U.S. equities finished mixed following yesterday’s rout, as investors digested a second day of testimony from Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The Chairman remained hawkish in his commentary, where he suggested rates may need to accelerate more than initially expected and may need to stay higher for longer than originally anticipated. Adding to the uncertainty, the afternoon release of the Fed’s Beige Book showed little change from the last installment.

Treasury yields were mixed with the yield curve inversion worsening, and the U.S. dollar was flat after yesterday’s rally. Crude oil prices were lower, and gold was little changed in choppy action. News on the equity front was light, as CrowdStrike topped quarterly earnings estimates and offered upbeat guidance, while UPS reiterated its full-year outlook.

The economic calendar was tilted toward labor data, as job openings dipped but remained elevated, and ADP’s private sector employment report bested forecasts ahead of Friday’s key non-farm payroll release.

Elsewhere, mortgage applications snapped a three-week losing streak, and the trade deficit came in slightly smaller than projected. Asia finished mixed and Europe also diverged, as the global markets processed the testimony from Fed Chairman Powell.

YouTube: CEO Susan Wojcicki Logs Off

By Staff Reporters

***

***

Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube for the last nine years, is stepping down. The video site has exploded under her watch, and its $29.2 billion in ad revenue last year accounted for about 10% of Google parent company Alphabet’s total sales.

But Wojcicki’s time at the company far predates YouTube—in fact, she was Google’s 16th employee. She was also its first landlord: In 1998, Wojcicki rented out her garage in Menlo Park, CA, to Google’s co-founders for $1,700 a month.

How to NAME Your New Medical Practice?

PRAGMATIC BUSINESS – NOT PERSONAL – MANAGEMENT ADVICE

By Dr. David E. Marcinko MBA CMP®

CMP logo

SPONSOR: http://www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.org

THE MEDICAL PRACTICE NAME

Did you know that most experts recommend against naming a practice with your own name because it limits future growth and you may lose the benefits that a more descriptive name would bring?

Your business name will likely be incorporated using your practice’s name, although larger (multi-specialty group) practices may use a more general name for the entire enterprise; and then having multiple “dba’s” (”Doing Business As”) for the individual practices under the umbrella. It is important to discuss these options with an attorney if you believe this arrangement has advantage; others find it confusing.

Healthcare Marketing: How to Name Your Medical Practice - The Medically

Usually, your medical specialty can be used as a base-name, and then some descriptor to differentiate it from local competing practices. Selecting a name like “The Allegiance Partners” does not indicate that medicine is your service. On the other hand, naming your practice “Podiatry Associates of Your Town” won’t be helpful to patients looking for you in the yellow pages, health insurance provider network list, or internet search engines, and finding your practice listed just before “Your Town Podiatry Partners”. It is therefore good to be cognizant of your competitors’ names when choosing your own. And, you should select a name that will hopefully grow with you into a larger enterprise.

For example, are you a solo doctor, but are pretty sure you’ll take on one or more partners in the future? Then besides not naming your practice after yourself, you may choose to add “Group” or “Partners” to your name initially even if you’re the only doctor. Is there any possibility you’ll open a second office in another town? Naming your medical practice something like the ”Apple Street Internal Medicine Group” may not make sense when your second office is opened on Main Street in a nearby city, in a few years.

Order Forms and Practice Stationary

Orders forms, invoices, purchase and estimate forms, business cards, envelopes, stationary and specialty labels can all be personalized for your medical practice name, script, colors and logo. Often, local or regional printers are the most cost effective and you support another entrepreneur, as well.

Well-know internet companies that print stationary are: www.nebs.com; www.paperdirect.com; and www.vistaprint.com

Crafting a Medical Practice Business Plan for Entrepreneurial Physicians

Join Our Mailing List

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA

An Essential Document for Start-Up Practices

The analog to a personal financial plan is the medical practice business plan. While mature practitioners may casually be familiar with some elements of the former by default, most new physicians are totally unfamiliar with requirements of the later.

The Need

Unfortunately, without an initial business plan, the need for a personal financial plan may become moot. This is because absent financial backing from family, friends or a cushy nest egg, the business plan is a key tool for raising start-up capital for a new medical practice. It may also be demanded by a commercial bank, or the Small Business Administration (SBA), for a loan to finance growth of an existing practice; despite the use of new asset based lending and accounts receivable factoring techniques.

On the other hand, a comprehensive business plan may be required by investment bankers for funding purposes; in exchange for a healthy percentage of your future large group practice.

Standard Plan Format

The following format for medical business plan writing can be used for every new practice, established practice or simply an existing practice that wishes to expand or establish a new service or product line to its existing offers.

The format for any written business plan is somewhat standard. It usually contains at least the following topics and sub-topics, and perhaps many more depending on your specialty with a varying emphasis on some sections or a de-emphasis of others; also depending on the practice and covering no more than 25-40 numbered pages:

· Cover Sheet

· Table of Contents

· Physician Executive Summary (Statement of Purpose)

· Physician Credentials

· Mission Statement

· Goals and Objectives (Risks and Rewards)

· Business Office Form

· Operational and Facilities Management

· Marketing Plan

· Business Competition

· Patient Targeting

· Advertising Methodology

· SWOT Analysis

· Practice Philosophy

· Human Resources and Personnel

· Financial Management

· Financial and Operating Budget

· Proforma Financial Statements

· Exit Strategy

Assessment

In the past, perhaps the two most important components of a medical business plan were [1] physician credentials and [2] the business model. Today; it is the exit strategy!

Have you ever written a medical office business plan and what was the outcome?
