And … Why the American Medical News was Shuttered after 50 Years!

[Some Musing on our Eighth Anniversary]

Ann Miller RN MHA

[Executive-Director]

Happy BirthdayAccording to well known healthcare industry journalist Kevin B. O’Reilly, a dramatic drop in medical-publishing revenues caused the recent closure of the American Medical News, effective with a final edition of the newspaper published just last month.

Published for more than five decades, AMNews was hit hard by industrywide trends. The newspaper’s revenue fell by two-thirds during the last decade, as reported by Thomas J. Easley, senior vice-president and publisher of periodic publications for the American Medical Association [AMA].

Unsustainable financial losses forced the move despite the newspaper’s editorial quality, the AMA’s senior management reportedly said. But, the Association’s other news operations will be enhanced.

What the Death of American Medical News Says About the Future of American Medicine

###

How we survive!

We’ve been online for eight years now. We have a skeleton staff, a scalable business model, an almost free distribution model, no print analog, and a tiny electronic advertising revenue stream.

Oh, let’s not forget some brilliant essayists, contrarian contributors, insightful commentators and controversial opinions that are often the elephant in the virtual room.

Our gratitude to you all is without limits.

So, how else do we do it?

Interestingly – Our print books are good, better and best sellers. We’ve been releasing one major, semi-peer reviewed text each year …. and sales are brisk. And, we are now negotiating to begin our next and ninth volume for 2014-15. We maintain our own copy-rights, perform in-house editing, seek out the best contributing authors, and reduce the cost of numerous channels of distribution. How do we do it, year after year? In a word, professional crowdsourcing.

Our consulting business is increasingly robust, too. Cudos to healthcare reform, managed care, and the PP-ACA!

And … another thing

I ask again. How do we do it? How do we stay in business?

Here are some more ways to help-us, do just that:

  1. Subscribe to the ME-P site
  2. Tell a friend or colleague about us
  3. Visit our Blogroll list
  4. Use our classified ads or advertise with us
  5. Purchase a printed handbook, dictionary, software product or textbook
  6. Use our career and educational resources
  7. “Ask a Consultant” for free advice
  8. Request a strategic competitive consultation
  9. Hire us for a medical practice valuation or revenue enhancement review
  10. Request a medical business planning RFP
  11. Purchase a practice management checklist
  12. Seek out our financial planning advice
  13. Ask for second opinion; hire our thought-leaders
  14. Request a healthcare econometrics review
  15. Seek out our practice management or business advice
  16. Become a Certified Medical Planner™ www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.org
  17. Request a speaker for a pharmaceutical seminar or health convention
  18. Attend a seminar, sponsor or take a learning-teaching cruise with us
  19. Donate to us …  and repeat
  20. Buy a link … and repeat again
  21. Send a thank you note to our Publisher-in-Chief and Managing Editor
  22. Visit us often to review, read, rant and rave.

Invitation to Respond

By Prof. Hope Rachel Hetico; RN MHA CPHQ CMP™

[Managing Editor]

Dear ME-P Readers and Subscribers,

On behalf of the Medical Executive-Post, I would like to invite you to become a member of the ME-P Partner Research Panel (MPRP) for 2011. This panel presents a chance for a limited number of M-E-P participants to have their voices heard through ongoing research studies with the www.MedicalBusinessAdvisors.com [iMBA, Inc].

The insights and suggestions of this vital partner community help shape products and programs which are critical to our mutual success.

The MPRP Panel

The MPRP panel is composed of ME-P readers and subscribers who have agreed to participate in a research program which asks their opinions via surveys typically once or twice a month. Most of your feedback would be submitted online, although there may be opportunities to participate in more in-depth types of research throughout the year. In all cases, it is up to you whether you choose to participate in the research request. All responses remain confidential and are reported only in aggregate.

Building Out the Process

As we continue to build out this process we are seeing greater internal iMBA Inc management participation and interest. External ME-P product development groups and business teams are asking for MPRP insights, as well. Complete studies have been developed around some topics, while at other times MPRP members have been asked to help with focus group activities and in-depth interviews. The help provided by the MPRP is not only appreciated by iMBA Inc, but has become vital to our work here at the ME-P.

Registration Required

I hope you will become a part of this new, vital component of the MPRP network. The registration process requires only a click on the “Join Us” tab, or confirmation-reply email to: MarcinkoAdvisors@msn.com Your membership will be a powerful way to present your thoughts and opinions to the management and staff of the ME-P. Please call us [770-448-0769] with queries, and/or “click” or email register now.

Join Our Mailing List

Assessment

You’ve probably already noticed that we have asked two of our valued research partners and sponsors www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.com to assist us in managing and maintaining the many details of the panel. The CMP™ program has been involved with partner research on an ongoing basis for more than five years. Over time, you will become familiar with both www.MedicalBusinessAdvisors.com and www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.com as two of the primary contacts for the ME-P Partner Research Panel.

Conclusion

Thanks for your participation in the ME-P Partner Network. I look forward to hearing more from you in the future. And so, your thoughts and comments on this ME-P are appreciated. Feel free to review our top-left column, and top-right sidebar materials, links, URLs and related websites, too. Then, subscribe to the ME-P. It is fast, free and secure.

Defining “Deep” Physician Debt

Exiting the Quagmire

By Staff Reportersfp-book3

There is no magical method or SIMPLE button that a physician or lay household can use to get out of debt. The two most critical factors in this process are budgeting and discipline, as discussed elsewhere on this ME-P blog forum. And, a payment plan that pays off debt by a selected target date will help. Debt consolidation can also be of assistance in this regard.

Defining “Deep-Debt”

According to Eugene Schmuckler PhD, MBA, of the Institute of Medical Business Advisors Inc:

“deep debt” is any financial burden that produces negative daily thoughts, interferes with professional work and/or keeps the doctor awake at night.”

www.MedicalBusinessAdvisors.com

Payment Plans and Budgets

Once a payment plan has been computed, the doctor should develop a budget that will free up enough money to make the payments. If this isn’t possible because the monthly payments are too high, the payoff period should be lengthened until the amount available for debt payment is equal to (or greater than) the readjusted monthly payment. After this, the doctor should set up a more disciplined approach to spending, budgeting and investing, going forward.

www.HealthDictionarySeries.com

Consumer Credit Counseling Services

Unfortunately, more than a few doctors get themselves so deeply into debt that they can’t make the minimum payments required by lenders. This is a very serious situation and usually involves negotiation for payment adjustments. Unless the doctor or his fiduciary financial advisor has experience in this area; it is a good idea to seek help from to an organization like the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

The CCCS

The CCCS is an organization that works with those who are struggling to manage their financial debt through counseling in the areas of budgeting, understanding credit reports, and debt management. CCCS also provides educational courses for the public, with fee services ranging from $0 to a few hundred dollars. The counseling sessions focus on developing a budget that allows the client to pay all of his/her monthly expenses. The debt management program teaches about debt and also negotiates with lenders for adjusted monthly payments. CCCS tries to get the payment reduced by spreading the payments over a longer period of time and has been successful at getting lenders to reduce or even waive interest on the loans, in some cases.

Bill Consolidation

Another service of the debt-management program is bill consolidation. The debtor sends one payment a month to CCCS, who in turn pays the client’s bills. The education service provides seminars at which various speakers address different financial issues. A medical professional can find the location of the nearest CCCS office (or similar organizations) by calling the National Foundation for Consumer Credit referral line at 800-388-2227.

Assessment

In the climate of today, the above post is no longer one that some physicians might not heed. In fact, the days of the financial super-specialist with arcane products or sophisticated strategies that depend on a perfect storm of economic indicators, is long over. It is time to call in the financial primary care doctor and get back to basics; live on less than you make, and invest prudently, watching all costs.

www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.com

Conclusion

Your thoughts and comments on this Medical Executive-Post are appreciated. Have you ever used the serves of CCCS, or similar? Feel free to opine anonymously.
