Keeping your luxury vehicle running smoothly with these Hot-Weather “tips and pearls”

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

[By Nalley Collision Center]

Dr. Marcinko

You and your car survived the harsh winter. Thanks to your preparation and careful driving, you stayed on the road and emerged from the thaw without incident. But, before breathing that sigh of relief and going on your way, make sure you know how to maintain your vehicle in the warmer temperatures with these tips and pearls.

Why? Warm weather can stress cars as much as the cold, so take steps now to prepare you and your car for the spring and summer by following these important tips.

Check the Climate Control System

Many doctors forget about their air conditioner while relying on the heater during the winter months. During that time, air conditioners can leak refrigerant and experience other mechanical failures without notice. Before getting caught without relief in the heat, take your car to your dealer for an AC checkup.

Inspect Windshield Wipers

During the winter, windshield wipers can stick to the windshield and tear before breaking free. Don’t let damaged wipers catch you off guard when the spring rains hit. Inspect your wipers and replace them if they look damaged or worn. If you need help with this, stop by your dealer for assessment, parts, and installation.

Inspect Tires

Your tires were fine before winter. Several months and possibly thousands of miles later, your tires may not be in such good shape now. Cold temperatures make the air inside tires shrink; that’s why you inflated your tires for winter driving. As the air warms, however, the air expands, often causing overinflated tires that can wear unevenly and prematurely. Check the tires on your car for proper air pressure and adjust them if necessary.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 3,000 deaths and 116,000 injuries between 2005 and 2009 resulted from tire-related problems. Don’t become part of those statistics.

Replace Air Filter

During the winter weather, salt and sand that are used to keep roads safe affect your car’s air filter. So, check it yourself or ask your dealer to check your air filter for signs of problems. By restoring free airflow into your engine, you can boost the fuel efficiency of your car by one-tenth or more. You will also improve acceleration, so take it easy on the gas.

Time for a Carwash

The melting snow, salt, and sand on winter roads covers your car and its undercarriage with a corrosive mixture, setting the stage for rust and marred paint. With winter weather past, take your car to the car wash for a thorough cleaning to prevent lasting damage from the winter. Better yet; wash it yourself. With some intentional care, you can keep your car looking great for a long time to come.

General Inspection

The break between winter and summer is a great time to give your car a good once-over. Verify your registration and inspection stickers are up-to-date and that your insurance cards and all your paperwork are in order.

Also, check fluid levels for the oil, transmission, brakes, power steering, and windshield wash. If your car is due for scheduled maintenance, take it to your dealer now to have it done. Routine maintenance and prompt repairs will help your car beat the challenges of the heat.

Does the Summer Sun Damage your Luxury Vehicle’s Paint Job?

Join Our Mailing List

Protecting your vehicle from the effects of sunlight

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

[By Nalley Lexus Roswell, GA]

Dr. DEMSunlight is dynamic. It keeps us warm, allows plants to grow, and can even be converted into electricity.

Unfortunately, sunlight has an equally harmful side on human skin. As a result, the ultraviolet rays in sunlight, also known as UV rays, can burn unprotected skin and blister it. This is well known by doctors, especially plastic surgeons, dermatologists, you and me.

UV Damage

But, did you know that UV rays can seriously damage the paint on your luxury car or truck, too? Yes – it’s true.

During the warm weather seasons, exposure to UV rays actually breaks down the molecules that give your vehicle’s paint its color and shine. Though modern automobile paint includes additives to resist these effects, the paint’s effectiveness only lasts for a limited time period. So, when a car spends much of its life entrenched in sunlight, its paint will gradually fade and become dull.

Temperature too!

While sunlight is harmful, temperature can be a problem, as well. When a car sits out in the fierce midday sun, it gets hot and its body panels expand. Such expansion causes the paint to contract at a microscopic level, which may ultimately crack your car’s paint or dry out and crack leather seats. Over time, the gradual effects of the sun’s heat diminish your car’s gleaming showroom finish. As the sun is ubiquitous, it may seem as though sun damage is inescapable.

However, it is possible to extend the life of your car’s paint job by following these tips.

***

My Jaguar

***

Tips and Pearls

Seek shade

Whenever possible, keep your ride out of sunlight. Park in a covered garage or use a car cover for an immediate solution. You may also park your car under the shade of a tree for a short period of time, but it is important to remember that tree sap and bird droppings can also damage your paint finish.

Wax

Modern vehicles are finished with a layer of “clear coat” over the actual paint color. This gives the paint its deep gloss and helps protect the pigment from UV rays, however it doesn’t last forever. Regular waxing provides additional protection for your car, filling in cracks that form as a result of sunlight exposure.

A simple way to see if your car needs waxing is by performing the water beading test. To perform this test, drip water onto your paint. If the water forms beads on the paint surface, your car is perfectly waxed. However, if the water spreads on the paint surface, your car is in need of a new wax job.

A Word on Automobile Cabin Air Filter Maintenance

Join Our Mailing List

Not Just for Physician-Allergists

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

DEM 2013Cabin air filtration is easily the most forgotten automobile maintenance item in passenger or luxury cars.

Since their introduction in roughly the early 1990s, more and more cars are equipped with cabin air filters – from a sub-compact to a full-sized luxury car, nearly all cars available in North America now come equipped with them and thus there’s a pretty good chance your car is equipped with one, and a fair to middling chance that it needs replacement.

Now is the time to Inspect

So now, following pollen, grass and hay-fever, season, is a great time to learn more about your cabin air filter. Cabin air filters tend to be buried deep within the dashboard of your vehicle, where the heating, air conditioning and ventilation system are located. They are usually about the size of a standard sized sheet of computer paper, and can vary in terms of material, most common being a cellulose mesh.

The cabin air filter is responsible for removing particulate from the air, which can include a whole litany of things you don’t want to be breathing; diesel exhaust, rubber particles, pollen, dust and general air pollution among other things.

***

00t0t_3LK6BwGPBcB_600x450

***

Since the air entering the car through the heating and air conditioning system has to pass through the cabin air filter, the filter can get clogged quite quickly depending on environmental conditions, and a clogged cabin air filter drastically reduces the overall effectiveness of your HVAC system as it struggles to get air flow that a clean cabin air filter would provide.

Other excellent reasons to change your cabin air filter, besides better circulation, include fresher smelling air and fewer allergens entering the cabin. Many cabin air filters accumulate leaves and other debris that your car winds up ingesting which can lead to musty or stale odors. Ultimately, switching out your cabin air filter is a small expense that keeps you from inadvertently sneezing months later.

***

***

As your cabin air filter is “out of sight, out of mind”, it’s definitely a good idea to get in the habit of having it inspected and replaced regularly. What are the right intervals for you? It all depends where (and how much) you drive. It’s a small and affordable maintenance item that will ensure you have many miles of driving comfort ahead.

How to Safely Clean an Auto Engine Bay

Join Our Mailing List

Thoughtfully … with Some Care!

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

Dr David E Marcinko MBA

I’ve been washing the engine bay of my Jaguar XJ-V8-L for the past several years. How did I get started? Isn’t this really bad for my car? Why did / do I bother?

History

I worked with a neighbor who was seriously obsessed with keeping his 1986 Thunderbird clean – way more so than I ever was; or currently am. He popped the hood one day and I marveled at the near showroom appearance of the ~ 28 year old engine bay. I asked the same questions many of you have about getting the various components and systems wet.

The owner of the car was quite talented with most things automotive, especially the electrical systems as he was a professional car audio install technician with a high end audio shop. The sound system in that car was phenomenal even by today’s standards. He was quite confident that the water would not cause problems. That engine bay got a rinse with nearly every car wash and a regular washing. I was still skeptical. I carefully tried it myself starting out away from wiring and the alternator gradually becoming more confident until the entire engine bay was squeaky clean. It looked great then and still does.

I’ve never had a problem with getting any electrical items wet – even a distributor. A modern engine bay is engineered to get somewhat wet during normal use. Assuming your engine bay is in reasonably good shape, with no defects in the electrical, crankcase ventilation and intake systems you will most likely have no problems as well. This works best and is easiest when a car is new as dirt and oxidation never have a chance to start. Even an older engine – dare I say a Jaguar – bay can be transformed with a little extra work.

Jag DEM (1)

***

This ME-P is being provided as a guide only – I cannot guarantee you will not experience difficulties. Wash your engine bay at your own risk.

This is what works very well for me …

Start with a cold engine. A warm or hot engine will cause any detergent you spray on to quickly evaporate. Letting it sit and soak is what gets things clean. I cover electrical components, and have put a plastic bag over open exposed conical air filters.

Obviously, do not spray liquid directly into the air intake. Use a garden hose with a variable nozzle to go from a fine spray to a concentrated stream depending on what you are hosing down. A pistol grip style of nozzle is the easiest and fastest to use. A high pressure car wash hose is asking for trouble. Common sense is called for here.

I wash the underside of the hood first. I removed the fiber insulation the day I got my Jaguar home as I have with all of my previous cars. I personally believe the insulation is largely for sound suppression. It becomes a dirt magnet if left on and seems logical to assume it also promotes heat soak. I have not observed any engine heat related effects on the exterior hood paint with/out it.

But, the Jag is not my daily-driver. Hose down the hood, fenders, windshield and engine hosing off loose debris. Spray liberal amounts of full strength Simple Green all over, especially in the inaccessible areas. You would probably see good results with diluted Simple Green as well. Hose off any overspray from the fenders as Simple Green is too harsh for polished waxed surfaces. Let soak for ~5 minutes or so.

bay

***

While I wait – I have a few odd brushes I use to scrub around where I can. Thoroughly hose off all areas (with common sense) until all traces of the detergent are gone. Some areas can take higher pressure, like the intercooler and around the firewall. Once the car / engine wash has been completed I take the car on a drive to heat and dry the engine bay out. I repeat this maybe twice a year – that’s all it takes to keep everything looking showroom clean. The Jaguar under engine cover does a great job in keeping dirt out of the engine bay.

“Claying” Your Own Luxury Vehicle

Join Our Mailing List

How to Remove Bonded Surface Contaminants

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

Dr. DEMClaying is the process of removing bonded surface contaminants from your car that cannot be removed by washing alone and that need to be eliminated before the polishing process, using synthetic poly clay.

It works by gently pulling and lifting the bonded contaminants off the surface which then become encapsulated in the clay.

A detailing spray, or designated clay lube is used to lubricate the surface to prevent the clay bar from inflicting damage as it is drawn across the surface.

The Process

One panel at a time is worked and once the clay has picked up contaminants it can be folded and remolded to reveal a fresh, clean surface and prevent any contaminants being drawn over the surface.

Claying is primarily used to remove bonded contaminants from the paintwork of your car but can also be used on glass, metal and other parts of your car depending on the grade of the clay being used.

***

clay-bars

***

You should clay your car if you are looking to achieve the best possible results. The depth of shine and reflection of a polished and waxed vehicle may be compromised if bonded surface contaminants have not been removed. It is important to clay your car before polishing because if the contaminants are picked up during the polishing process they may be drawn over the surface inflicting light scratches and swirl marks.

It is also important to ensure bonded contaminants are removed because they will act to attract and accumulate other dirt and debris and if left bonded to the surface for a long enough period of time may even weaken the paintwork underneath.

Preparing Your Car’s AC for Hot Weather

Join Our Mailing List

Summer is Near

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

[By Nalley Lexus Roswell, GA]

Dr. DEMAir conditioning systems are specifically designed to be largely maintenance free, but small issues can grow into big problems without regular checks. In short, it pays to be prepared for the unexpected in hot weather conditions. If you want to keep your cool during your daily commute or on an upcoming road trip, here is a handy checklist to help you prepare your car’s air conditioning system for spring and summertime driving.

Timing is everything

Don’t wait until the hot weather has arrived to start using and testing your air conditioning. Use the system regularly throughout the year, and particularly in the spring, when you have a few weeks before the hot weather kicks in to get any remedial work carried out. Test the air flow in the system. Turn the air conditioning on high and manually inspect each of the vents. Is air coming out of every vent? Is the air pressure the same around the car, or are some vents weaker than others? Change the temperature of the system. Is the air cooling down as you would expect?

Listen for strange noises

This isn’t about things that go bump in the night, but more about ticks, rattles, or knocking sounds that might indicate there’s a problem with the system. Listen at each vent and also at the dashboard when the car is idle, and when you put your foot on the gas. It’s quite possible that there is a small obstruction (such as a leaf or twig) somewhere in the system, or there could be a more serious problem.

***

Jaguar 2000 V8-L

***

Check out unusual smells

Excessive oily, mechanical smells could indicate that the system is damaged or underperforming in some way and may need mechanical attention. Stale or unpleasant odors may indicate that the air filter needs replacing or that something is caught somewhere in the system. Your owner’s manual will be able to tell you how to change the filter, or get your mechanic on the case if you’d rather not do it yourself.

Check the coolant level

If the air is powerful but doesn’t appear to cool properly, you may have a problem with the coolant level in your air conditioning system. This will naturally deplete over time, but low levels may also indicate a leak in or damage to the system. The owner’s manual for your car can probably give you instructions on how to check, but if you’re unsure, consult a trusted mechanic for a second opinion.

Tips on Purchasing a Vehicle

Join Our Mailing List

An Economic and Ethical Decision?

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

Dr. DEMWith the possible exception of the handgun, the automobile represents the greatest single item of ownership that is capable of inflicting death, injury and damage. America’s fascination with the automobile has resulted in a marked increase in the power and potential speed of our vehicles.

The latest trend in Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) has also witnessed a substantial increase in damage due to their higher ground clearance and heavier frames. The owners and operators of any vehicle must be financially able to respond to any resulting claims, or they need to transfer the risk through insurance. All states require some minimal coverage for personal vehicles.

Purchasing the Vehicle

Typically, car buyers who wait until the end of the year can score a deal. Buying at the end of the month can also increase negotiating power as dealerships look to move volume, and shoppers in the late summer and early fall may be able to get a deal when the new-model-year vehicles enter inventories.

JAG 2 (1)

Also, cold or rainy weather can work to a doctor’s advantage, since bad weather can discourage people from walking around a lot to look at vehicles, potentially giving those who do show up a bit more negotiating power. Even a serious buyer who goes to a dealership near the end of the day may receive a better price as the dealer makes concessions to speed things up so everyone can go home.

JAG 2 (2)

Assessment

So, if you time your car purchase right, and you aren’t buying one of the more popular models or colors, you might save $500 to $2,000 just by waiting until the end of the month or day to make your purchase.

Beware my [premium] gas guzzler above; not an EPA favorite, but she passes annual emissions inspection like a champ!

How to Stop Winter Road Salt Vehicle Damage

Join Our Mailing List

Act quickly to prevent rust and undercarriage damage

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA and Nalley Lexus, Roswell GA]

DEM blue tieEach year, physicians and all drivers face the same challenge in the aftermath of wintry weather: potential rusting and other vehicle damage due to the buildup of road salt, ice, and grime. And, this winter was particularly severe; even here in Georgia.

Salt Rage

Road salt serves an important function by actively melting snow and ice that may have formed on the surface of the highway in addition to preventing snow and ice from settling in the first place, improving traction for road users and helping to keep the traffic flowing more safely. The main disadvantage of road salt is that, if left unchecked, it can potentially cause damage to your car.

When road salt builds up on your vehicle, don’t wait to get your vehicle thoroughly cleaned as soon as possible, or use a professional cleaning and detailing service.

Prevention is key to avoid long-term damage

Many experts recommend applying a coat of protective wax, followed by a coat of wax sealant, before road salt buildup, since it is far more difficult to prevent damage to the car after the fact. These products help protect the paintwork from the corrosive effects of road salt.

But it’s not just the paintwork that requires protection. Your brake and fuel lines are very susceptible to damage from corrosion. Therefore, road salt cannot only have damaging aesthetic implications—it can have a significant impact on your vehicle’s safety as well.

Get salty deposits removed quickly

When you have been driving on salted roads, it is important to remove salt deposits as soon as possible. A simple car wash may not always be the most effective option. With professional detailing services though, you can count on getting a thorough cleaning which will help protect your vehicle against possible damage. Additional services like steam cleaning and undercarriage cleaning offer even more peace of mind.

Professional detailing services may be more affordable than you think, especially when you consider the long-term damage that can result if road salt is left unchecked. After the cleaning, we recommend getting your vehicle re-waxed and sealed to protect your vehicle against any future wintry conditions during the season.

Do Doctors RV?

Join Our Mailing List

On Recreation Vehicles?

By Rick Kahler CFP® http://www.KahlerFinancial.com

Rick Kahler CFP“See new places!”

In my experience, the number-one activity most people look forward to when they retire from earning an income is travel. Seeing and experiencing the world has never been easier. True, air travel is rarely easy or pleasurable, and it can be expensive. Yet, with a little planning and work, travel can fit easily into many retirees’ budgets.

Affordable

The most affordable option is becoming a part-time or full-time RVer. While to me driving around the country in a motorhome or hauling a camper sounds like a lot of work, it’s very pleasurable for a lot of folks. There are no security lines, tour schedules to keep, or nights spent stranded in airports. You may not go fast, but you get to go where you want, when you want.

Options

RVing doesn’t mean you need to buy a motorhome as long or as pricy as a semi-trailer truck. It can be as simple as pulling a small camper/trailer or a fifth wheel. While you will need a heavier gas-guzzling vehicle than a Toyota Avalon to pull your rig, the costs can be significantly lower than staying in motels. This is the case even when you consider costs like auto insurance, depreciation, tires, maintenance, and camping fees. You can even minimize the camping fees as long as you’re okay with a view of the local Walmart’s parking lot.

A Lifestyle?

Judging from retirees I know, RVing can become a lifestyle very quickly. RVers develop networks and associations with other RVers to share experiences, costs, and information. Some of my clients enjoy the lifestyle so much they have actually sold their homes, preferring the RV as their primary residence.

This is when RVing can take financial efficiency to new levels. By not owning a home, you can take the money previously tied up in a personal asset and make it produce income.

Example:

Let’s illustrate with some numbers. It isn’t uncommon for couples in the Black Hills who are in their 50’s or 60’s to own a paid-for home worth $250,000. That amount, invested in passively-managed mutual funds diversified in five or more asset classes, reasonably produced an annualized return of 6% over the past 10, 20,or even 30 years. If you leave half this return to help keep up with inflation and withdraw the other half, you’ll have  about $625 a month in new income.

The good news is you don’t need a lot of money to retire to an RV lifestyle. The extra $625 a month from selling a home, combined with Social Security and a modest IRA, can go a long way. I know several RVers who do nicely on such income.

Economic Organization

Here’s how it might work for a typical couple. A total amount saved to IRA’s of $450,000, plus the proceeds from selling their home for $250,000, would produce income of $21,000 a year. Adding this to their combined Social Security income of around $30,000 a year would give them $51,000. That’s more than enough to enjoy modest but comfortable RV living.

An added benefit for residents of a state like South Dakota, which has no income tax but relatively high property tax, is a lower tax bill.

Road to Retirement

Assessment

Just one word of caution. Before you sell your house, make sure full-time RVing is right for you. Take a trial period of at least a year, renting out your home while you travel. Then, once you decide the roving lifestyle is what you want, you can cut your ties to terra firma and set out to enjoy the freedom of the open road.

Conclusion

So, do doctors and other medical professionals, RV? Really?

Marcinko MBAProof is in the long haul, of course [more than a decade for me], but it appears as if Jaguar finally threw off the curse of unreliability. Credit typically goes to many sources, but leading the pack has to be Jaguar’s prior owner, Ford, which has brought its mighty engineering and quality suppliers into the Jaguar picture. Tata Motors, today.

Based on my experience, the XJ8L represents the highest point in Jaguar’s history. Many think it’s one of the finest luxury sedans ever built. The Vanden Plas, named for a famous British maker of custom automobile bodies, is the most luxurious XJ8L, swathed in chrome, walnut and lambs wool.

As the XJ8 designation suggests, this is a V8-powered Jag. The V12 and inline 6-cylinder engines were discontinued with the 1999 models. The 4.0-liter V8 called a sweetheart was refined in 2000 to reduce emissions. Performance was not affected.

Jaguar’s XJ8 was available in four versions in 2000: Originally priced at $55,780 XJ8, the $60,830 long wheelbase XJ8L, the even more luxurious $64,880 Vanden Plas and the $69,030 supercharged and fully loaded XJR. Those prices compared favorably to those of the $66,970 BMW 740iL and the $74,495 Mercedes-Benz S420; back in the day.

2

Walkaround

Regardless of trim line, Jaguar’s XJ is a beautiful car. It is stately without being stuffy, and the soft lines are uniquely Jaguar. The 2000 XJ8 continued the design theme set in 1986; Jaguar tried horizontal, contemporary-looking headlights in the 1980s, but they were so universally assailed that the company came back with round lights and they are critical to the overall look.

The Vanden Plas shares the longer wheelbase with the XJ8L, which is 117.9 inches. The standard XJ8 and the XJR ride on a 113-in. wheelbase. Visually, that wheelbase extension is reflected in the length of the rear windows.

The powertrain, suspension and electrical system were new to the sedan. Tata now owns Jaguar and has brought financial support and technology to the company, which greatly benefited the XJ8. Electrical systems, electronics and other traditional Jaguar problem areas have been eliminated since Ford got involved.

The 4.0-liter V8 has double overhead-cams and four valves per cylinder. It produces 290 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 290 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm.

That impressive power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. This electronically controlled automatic adapts to varying driving conditions; it senses whether the driver is cruising along the highway, hot-footing down a back road or climbing a long grade and it varies shift points accordingly for optimum power and efficiency.

The transmission also had a self-regulating adaptive capability; it compensates automatically for the effects of aging by adjusting shift quality based on any slippage it detects. Sport and standard modes can be selected by the driver: The standard PRNDL pattern can be used, or shifts can be made manually by moving the stick to the left.

Automatic Stability Control comes standard on all Jaguars. ASC operates at all speeds, using engine intervention to reduce wheel spin on slippery roads. If a rear wheel starts to spin, the anti-lock brake (ABS) controller signals a computer, which controls the spinning by reducing throttle, retarding ignition timing or cutting fuel to the cylinders. This feature has been a bit problematic for me; and others.

An optional traction control system includes all ASC functions plus brake intervention. This system comes as part of the All-Weather package, which also includes heated front and rear seats. Both types of traction control can be switched off.

The front suspension is fully independent with unequal-length upper and lower wishbones, coil springs, shocks and an anti-roll bar. Double wishbones are also used at the rear with the drive shafts acting as upper links.

They are arranged for anti-lift under braking and anti-squat under acceleration. Variable-ratio rack-and-pinion power steering is speed-sensitive.

1

Interior

Jaguar’s uniqueness is especially evident inside my vehicle. Getting in is like sliding into an English gentleman’s club, with yards of supple leather, luxurious deep-pile carpeting, and polished wood on the doors, instrument panel and steering wheel. The instruments are simple and understated in keeping with the elegant mood.

Memory functions automatically adjust the driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirror. The driver’s seat moves back when Park is engaged for easy exit. It moves back to the last position it was set when the ignition is turned on. A [fragile] cup-holder pops out from the console, but any drinks in it tend to get in the way of shifting.

Thanks to the long wheelbase of the Vanden Plas, or L model, the rear compartment is huge and legroom is expansive. The bench seat has two depressed seating areas, but a third person would be comfortable in the middle. Airplane-like tray tables fold down from the front seatbacks. A small pod with two rocker switches on the left side of the passenger seat allows rear-seat passengers to move the seat fore and aft and adjust the angle of the seat back. Headroom is just as generous as legroom.

4

Driving Impression

The unique looks of the XJ8 and L are complemented by a driving experience all its own. Mercedes and BMW share a ride that is more on the firm side and generally feel tight and buttoned up. Lexus and Infiniti offer a softer ride and a more relaxed atmosphere. The XJ8L is wonderfully comfortable with an elegant feel.

Acceleration performance is startling with instant throttle response. On dry pavement, the Jag will light the rear tires up if the traction control is turned off. In a handful of seconds it’s hurtling past the speed limit. Jaguar says the XJ8 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, an impressive feat given its size and weight at 290-horse-power. (The 370-horsepower XJR can do it in a mere 5.4 seconds.)

Shifting is silky smooth, even at full throttle. You can almost feel the transmission signaling the engine to reduce power slightly because a shift is coming. It’s an almost imperceptible pause as the shift is made.

I had some fun with the manual shifting mode, but it seemed superfluous with a transmission that does such a great job on its own. The manual operation is electronically controlled to prevent downshifting at an inappropriate speed. The gear can be selected, but the shift won’t be made until speed has dropped sufficiently.

Differences between Normal and Sport suspension modes are perceptible on rough surfaces and in hard cornering. The Sport setting lets a little more road roughness come through the steering, but gives the car a slightly flatter stance in cornering.

Driving on narrow roads, I discovered that the fenders loom large from the driver’s seat. The left front fender obscures the center line and the right front fender masks the verge to give the driver a feeling the car is taking up all the lane and more. But it isn’t; and we never posed a threat to mail boxes or other vehicles.

The steering lets the driver feel connected to the road, providing a strong sense of control. The wheels do not straighten by themselves after a tight maneuver; they must be brought back in line by turning the steering wheel, just like a race car.

Quiet is an expected part of the luxury quotient, but we didn’t expect this much quiet. It is so quiet inside it’s almost eerie. No wind noise, no road noise, no harmonics from various systems. You can hear the transmission as it reaches a shift point, and there is a sound you realize must be the engine, but it is more like an electric motor humming than a V8 combusting.

Visibility is good in all directions; but I find the headrests make it a bit cumbersome. The C-pillars are quite thin, so rear visibility is above average for cars this size.

Overall, my 2000 XJ-8L provides a very pleasurable driving experience.

3

Assessment

This is certainly one of the finest cars built – yesterday. Ford’s involvement has undoubtedly had a lot to do with that achievement. The old quality bugaboo seems to be just a memory.

BMW and Mercedes and the rest really can’t be compared with the XJ8, other than in price, because the Jaguar offers something altogether different. In price, however, the XJ8 or L was very competitive. For luxury with a difference, drive a Jaguar XJ8 or L series.

5 Car Interior Upgrades that Will Make Your Drive More Enjoyable

Join Our Mailing List

I Love Used [Previously Owned] Cars –– But!

Dr. Marcinko

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™

By Nalley Lexus Roswell

As a doctor and financial advisor, I love a good used car.

Why? Let some else take the monetary depreciation hit. A vehicle about 2-4 years old, depending on make or model, is usually about right.

Take my own favorite auto, for example. It is a Jaguar 2000 XJ-V8-L, and she is a classic beauty. My daughter even named her Ele; short for Elegant. And, I show her off every chance I get.

But, did I pay $90,000 for her as a new vehicle? No Way!

Ageism

Allow me to say it again.  I love a good used car. But unfortunately, cars like people, get old over time.

So, if your car is starting to look and feel a bit tired and you don’t have the cash, or are too smart to go for a new one, you can consider investing in some car interior upgrades. An interior upgrade doesn’t need to cost a fortune, and you might be surprised at what a difference it can make. And it is a nice treat for your car as Fall approaches.

My Jaguar's engine after a steam

My Five Tips

Here are 5 car interior upgrades we at are confident will help make your ride more enjoyable without breaking the bank.

1. New seat covers

Car seats quickly get worn and tired, fabric can get ripped or stained, and leather or PVC can age and crack, making the seats rather less comfortable. New seat covers could make a big difference. There are a huge variety of different covers on the market with styles to suit all budgets and tastes. If you want to spend a bit more, consider having some or all of the seats completely re-upholstered. You’ll soon be enjoying a much more comfortable drive.

2. Driver’s seat upgrades

If the driver’s seat really isn’t comfortable any more, then a more viable option might be to upgrade the whole seat. A sports seat will provide a more comfortable, responsive driving position, offering much more support to different parts of your body.

3. Upgraded audio system

Music can make even the longest car journeys more bearable, so why not consider investing in an upgraded audio system? Talk to your local dealer, or neighborhood kid, about getting a price on a new system and having it fitted. You may be quite limited by the dimensions of the cavity on your dashboard, so make sure you measure accurately and opt for a device that you can secure when the car is not in use to minimize the risk of theft.

4. Air purifier

Although you may use your air conditioner, the air in the cabin of your car can still get stale. Unless you open your car windows all the time, the chances are that you are continually breathing dead air. An air purifier can be bought cheaply, and in most cases, installs easily into the cigarette lighter socket.

5. Car mounts

Car mounts are an increasingly popular way for drivers and their passengers to make better use of their gadgets on the move. A dashboard car mount can help you store and use your iPhone or iPod Touch on the go. A mount on your sun visor can be used to keep your sunglasses safe and secure. You can even get a mount, which attaches to the back of the driver or front passenger seat and then folds down into a table for the rear passenger to use for a laptop.

The Most Common Sites of Automobile Accidents

Join Our Mailing List

Doctors Be Aware

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

By Nalley Collision Center

Dr. David E. Marcinko jpeg

Even with the latest safety features, the risk of an automobile crash or collision is never far away from the minds of most drivers. This is especially the case for some doctors who may have a proclivity to drive expensive automobiles.

But, where are the most common sites for automobile accidents? With the summer upon us – and the long Independence Day weekend – we may have the answers.

The Sites

One popular old statistic suggested that most accidents occur near the home, and numerous road safety campaigns have encouraged drivers not to be complacent as they drive along the streets in their local neighborhood. But, there are also several more specific places where automobile accidents are most common.

Car Parks

Car parks and lots are confined spaces full of motorists engaging in difficult maneuvers around other vehicles, while pedestrians walk around them. In general, the accidents are minor scrapes and dents, but they are very common indeed.

Junctions

It’s not surprising that intersections between roads are likely to produce more than their fair share of accidents. Whether it’s a rear end crunch for the driver suddenly forced to stop while turning, or a side-impact caused by a momentary loss of concentration, junctions are common crash locations.

The good news is that traffic should normally be moving relatively slowly at intersections, so damage is often limited to little more than scratched paintwork and injured pride.

Stoplights

Although unregulated intersections can pose safety problems for drivers, stoplights themselves bring their own challenges. They regulate traffic flow, and can lead to rear end collisions when drivers have to stop suddenly. Sometimes one rear end impact can result in a pile-up as the cars behind also fail to stop in time in a chain reaction. As many stoplights are associated with pedestrian crossings, these accidents have the potential to be serious.

Country Roads

Driving along an empty country road, a driver could be forgiven for thinking that the risk of auto accidents would be low. Unfortunately this appears not to be the case. Country roads are common accident sites for two reasons.

The fact that they are so quiet, and often straight with little variety in the landscape, means that motorists can find themselves losing concentration (often even falling asleep) for just a couple of moments, which is all it takes for a car to end up in a ditch by the side of the road.

Also, of course, rural highways tend not to be as well maintained as busy urban routes, and potholes and other debris also contribute to accidents.

Busy Roads

But, if quiet country roads are common accident sites, so are busy two (or more) lane roads. The reason why busy roads are dangerous is that with several lanes of traffic in each direction, sometimes with no barrier, drivers have no way of avoiding a head-on collision if, for example, a vehicle drifts towards the road’s center, or if a car pulls out into oncoming traffic to overtake the vehicle in front without checking the road ahead.

Assessment

Doctors, medical professionals and all motorists, have their work cut out, with quiet roads, busy roads, unregulated junctions, stoplights and car parks all providing rich scope for accidents. What this really illustrates, however, is the extent to which drivers cannot afford to let their attention slip for an instant when behind the wheel.

Understanding Vacation Time Shares

Join Our Mailing List

Including Participatory Vacation Exchanges

By Rick Kahler MS CFP® ChFC CCIM http://www.KahlerFinancial.com

Rick Kahler CFPFor residents of places like the Black Hills, where the first day of spring usually brings a snowstorm, timeshares for resorts in Florida or Mexico can have a lot of appeal. They seem like a fun idea for a vacation in the sunshine as well as a good deal financially.

My Research

Over the past 30 years I’ve researched hundreds of timeshare offers. I’ve never bought one. When you take a close look at the numbers and the restrictions, they simply don’t add up to a good value.

One of the biggest problems with timeshares in general is that they can lock you into a specific vacation. Spending a week at that resort in Mexico in February, exploring the local area and relaxing by the pool, might be wonderful for a year or even several years. But eventually you may get tired of going to the same location, doing the same things, and seeing the same people. After a while, even a rut person like me might want to do something different.

PVEs

Some timeshares mitigate this problem by participating in vacation exchanges [PVEs] like RCI, Interval International, and others. These services will add on a fee.

Not Liquid

You might think that, if you get tired of a timeshare, you can just sublease or sell it. These aren’t necessarily easy to do. There may be restrictions on subleasing, which is another good reason to read the fine print before you sign any timeshare contract. Selling is often difficult, and you certainly aren’t likely to get back your original purchase price. Meanwhile, you’re  paying annual fees whether you use the timeshare or not.

Total Costs

In figuring the cost of a timeshare, those annual fees are what really get you. You’re told up front what the fees are at the time you buy a timeshare. Yet you have no control over what the fees may be in five or ten years. The only thing you can count on is that they will increase.

Examples:

To illustrate these points, I recently investigated a resale site that listed a timeshare in a property in Boston, MA. It originally sold for $20,000 and was priced at $1,000. I passed on the opportunity because of the high fees.

In another example, I once took a serious look at a timeshare in a luxury apartment complex in London. It seemed like a possibility for fulfilling one of my dreams, living part of the year in Europe.

It wasn’t. As the salesperson told me, comparing the cost to buy a timeshare versus the cost to stay as a non-member, it would take around 30 years to recoup the purchase price. Then I—or more likely, my heirs—would have ten more years to stay for “free.” Free, that is, except for the annual fees.

Dr. Marcinko at Johns Hopkins University

[ME-P Editor-in-Chief in a Spring Fever Garden]

Investment in Lifestyle

The sales rep was quite clear that a membership at this complex wasn’t intended as a good financial investment. She described it as an “investment in lifestyle.”

So, when it comes to timeshares; that’s the bottom line. If the lifestyle being sold truly fits for you, and you believe it will continue to fit for the long term, then it’s possible that a timeshare may make sense.

Assessment

For most doctors and folks like us however, my conclusion is that most timeshares are too expensive even if someone gives you one. The annual fees alone will keep it from being a good value. I’ve never found one that was cheaper than getting a nice hotel or resort for a couple of weeks. Paying for a hotel stay will cost less in the long run, and you can enjoy relaxing vacations with no long-term commitment.

Check Your Driver’s License

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA

[Editor-in-Chief]

DEM 2013

WARNING: Did you know that identity theft and physician targeted automobile scams are all the rage.

According to recent FBI reports, and the National Motor Vehicle License Organization [NMVLO], now you can see anyone’s driver’s license on the Internet, including your own! And, medical professionals are the targeted group of choice.

The FIA Culprit

The United States amendment to the Freedom of Information Act, enacted on September 3rd 2008, provides public access to motor vehicle driver’s information in an e-format. Under the Motor Vehicle Operator License Identification  Act (MOLIA), all US states are required  to adhere to the Driver’s statute and store an electronic copy of all valid drivers licenses in their state. And, they do their best to make all license photo’s searchable.

Want Proof?

I just searched for my driver’s license and there it was … picture and all. Thanks Homeland Security!

Go to the web site, and check it out. It’s unbelievable. Just enter your name, city and state to see if your license is on file. After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked “Please Remove.” This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement.

Informing Doctors about Automobile Motor Oil Changes

Join Our Mailing List

What doctors need to know before their next service

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA and Nalley Lexus-Roswell]

DEM 2013Chances are you might have heard a thing or two about oil prices and all the work it takes to get it out of the ground. You may have even walked into an auto parts store and seen a wall filled with a plethora of different types, viscosities, and brands of oil. Luckily, there are choices to be had, and we’re here to walk you through them.

To Lubricate – Not Burn

Right off the bat, the point should be made clear that motor oil is not meant to be burnt. Sure, oils are used to make the gasoline and diesel fuels that power our vehicles, but motor oil is purely there to lubricate the internals of your engine, not to be burnt as an energy source. It’s that type of burning that causes some of the environmental issues. If you notice a blue smoke emitting from the tailpipe of your vehicle, and the need to add oil every so often, your engine might have a serious problem.

But, for normal motor oil usage, the lubrication of engine internals to keep metal from touching metal while the various bits and pieces move a couple thousand times a minute, there are basically two types – conventional and synthetic.

My Jaguar's engine after a steam

Conventional Oil

Conventional motor oil has done a great job for the past hundred years or so, and is still largely the norm when it comes to servicing your vehicle. Why is this? For the vast majority of drivers in normal vehicles, conventional motor oil meets the vehicle’s needs while being lower cost. In fact, a quart of conventional motor oil will only set you back half of what a quart of synthetic oil costs.

What are some of the benefits of conventional motor oil? First of all, there’s the cost proposition. And if you drive a normal vehicle, conventional oil might actually be a better choice, as it’s a thicker substance. Also, for that same reason, conventional oil is often the lubricant of choice in higher-mileage engines, where some worn components might not have the ability to seal that they once had.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic motor oil, however, is the new wave of engine lubrication. First designed for aircraft applications in the 1970s, it has also found a home in the engines of many high-performance vehicles. With the requirement of maintaining lubricating abilities at high altitudes and temperatures in aircraft, it was a natural fit. Because of the higher tolerances of aircraft and high-performance engines, the thinner nature of synthetic oil is meant to squeeze into every nook and cranny available, exactly what is needed in these finely-crafted engines.

While synthetic oil might cost twice as much as conventional, it’s thermal properties that keep it from breaking down over time mean that oil changes can occur less often at higher mileage intervals, saving you headaches and recouping some of those costs. Also, due to its thinner nature, it flows easier in cold weather, meaning less warm-up time for your engine, decreasing, once again, headaches and harmful exhaust fumes.

My Kitty Oil

I’ve got a near showroom and mint conditioned 2000 Jaguar XJ-V8-LWB. It  is a full-size luxury sedan, offering sporting drive characteristics, mixed with a classic style and interior comfort. It was available in multiple trims which all came very well equipped with upscale amenities. And, this extended wheelbase version offers much more rear seat leg room for long and winding Georgia road trips. The standard steel engine [not nikasil] in this XJ is a 4.0L V8 which produces 290 hp. The upper and lower timing chain tensioners are original, second generation metal, not plastic.

There is also a supercharged version of this vehicle which bumps output to an impressive 370 hp. Even with all of its power and weight, my XJ-8-L is still rated at over 20 mpg on the highway. Ammenities and upgrades include a mobile phone, Magellan GPS, LoJack theft recovery system, CD and MP-3 players, with internal and external cable antenna for satellite radio.

As for oil, my owners manual calls for 10w30 as preferred, but 10w40 is acceptable for hotter climates like Atlanta. Since my XJ-8 has 90,000 miles on it, I tend to use something a little thicker 15w40 and might used 20-50 come summer if it starts consuming in the high heat.

What a Cat!She is my third favorite female after my intelligent and beautiful wife, and smart and lovely daughter.

Assessment

Now that we know the key differences in the available types of motor oil, which should you choose at your next service? For that, your mechanic will take into account your driving style, vehicle mileage, and other factors, and help you decide what is best for your vehicle.

financial needs 300x262 Maslows hierarchy of needs & your financial goals

###

Numeric Figures Life’s Purpose

Financial goals are basically numerical figures of your purpose of life. We all have a purpose in life and the goals should be a part of that purpose. In fact the goals should make you achieve that purpose of life.

The Goals

Your financial goal should have a reasonable priority in fact these goals should be in parallel to your life goals.

Understand what motivates you to keep your goals on track. Lot of time it has been seen that people lose hope or lack motivation in between and they start showing signs of back stepping and indulging in some other interest.

Some time back I wrote about “Setting SMART Financial Goals” which talked about setting Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time-bound goals. But what about purpose of life, prioratising goals & motivation to achieve them.

I think Maslow’s hierarch of needs can help you in identifying purpose of your life, prioratising goals & giving enough motivation to achieve them. If you don’t know about Maslow’s hierarchy check Wikipedia page.

Automobile Rust Prevention Methods for Frugal Doctors

Join Our Mailing List

Getting the Most Beauty and Utility from your Car

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA [Publisher]

via Nalley Lexus Georgia

Dr. MarcinkoCar manufacturers have invested heavily in the use of new and improved materials to help reduce the risk of damage to your car from rust. Where decades ago rust was a very common problem, modern cars are rather more resilient.

But, if you drive an older depreciated car like we recommend on this ME-P; or a vintage vehicle like my classic 2000 Jaguar XJ-V8-LWB touring sedan; or if you just want to keep your new car in great condition for as long as possible, then you should never ignore the threat of rust.

On Rising Used Car Prices

The good news is that there are plenty of things [wash, clay-bar and wax] that you can do to prevent rust on your car; and care products abound. I use Meguir’s car care products on my favorite cat.

Here are five of them:

1. Protect your undercarriage

Your car’s undercarriage is very vulnerable to damage, and there are a number of critical mechanical components to protect. As the undercarriage is not something most drivers ever really look at, it is easy to neglect it. This could be a costly mistake. Invest in an undercarriage sealant to help protect mechanical parts from damage.

How Doctors Might Buy a Pre-Owned Car?

There are a number of products that you can apply yourself, but working on the undercarriage is potentially dangerous if you are not properly equipped, so you may want to ask your mechanic or service department for help.

My Jaguar touring sedan 2000 XJ-V8-L

2. Inspect your paint work regularly

Rust is a problem that gets progressively worse and the longer you leave a rust problem, the harder and more expensive it will be to fix. Learn about the parts of your car that are the most vulnerable. Paint work is constantly exposed to the elements, and the early signs of rust appear as bumps and lumps under the paint work. Treat these areas promptly.

Automobile Windshield Maintenance Tips for Physicians

There are a variety of ways to do this. Removing the affected metal is one possibility. Rust convertors halt the rusting process, but may not always be effective.

3. Use a rust preventative

There are a variety of rust preventative products available to consumers, many of which can easily be applied at home. A rust preventative can, for example, be sprayed onto or into a part of the car that is otherwise very difficult to access. This will help slow down the formation of any rust, and will also halt the spread of existing rust. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely when using these products.

Helping Doctors Understand Multi-Point Automobile Check-Up Inspections

4. Apply wax and sealant to your paint work

Look after your paint work to ensure that it stays in great condition. This is not just about cleaning and polishing the paint work. Over time, your paint work will wear and become more susceptible to rust if you are unable to protect the finish. A wax layer, with sealant, adds an additional physical barrier between the paint work and the elements. This prevents damage to the bodywork, which might otherwise expose the metal underneath the paint and allow rust to form. You can apply wax and sealant at home.

My Jaguar's engine after a steam

5. Keep your car clean

The simplest thing you can do to protect your car from rust is keep it clean. Deposits of mud, salt, and other dirt can all corrode your paint work surprisingly quickly. Regular car washing reduces the amount of time it takes to get the vehicle clean on an ongoing basis.

Reasons Why Doctors Should Get New Automobile Tires

Do not forget the undercarriage and other hard-to-reach places too, but do not use a jet spray underneath the car as this could damage vital parts. Again, it may be a good idea to ask your mechanic or service department to help if you are unsure.

And, don’t forget to steam clean that engine when needed, too!

The Evolution of Automobile Safety

Join Our Mailing List

Technology Rolls On

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA

By Matthew Pelletier [safety consultant]

DEM in his 1990 MiataMost ME-P readers are aware that I am a vintage Jaguar and automobile [sober] fanatic. And, after years of covering the local Emergency Room, I am glad to be retired from that job … Much better suited for the next-gen ED physician.

Perhaps, that’s why we occasionally post such leisure and lifestyle info-graphics for our audience and members.

History

Fortunately, much progress has been substantial since the automobile first made its mark on the transportation of people. The technology in auto safety has accelerated, especially over the last ten years, and with better engineering and consumer demand for safer vehicles there has been a reduction in the number of deaths and injuries from automobiles.

The Olden Days – Not so Golden

It seems absurd to hear people say cars aren’t made the way they used to be. Enhanced safety features show how inferior vehicles from the past are. Seat belts, overall structure, airbags and crash tests have saved lives and made car transportation safer for all drivers. Many find driving safety videos also help make everyone safer.

###

Evolution-Of-Auto-Safety

Review

The above infographic provides information on the changes in safety to automobiles throughout history.

• Government legislation and automakers have continually worked on improving automobile safety features over the last 100 years.
• States like Michigan implement drivers education programs before licenses are issued helping to educate in safe driving practices.
• New technology and engineering meet consumer demand and show automakers are listening to their customers by designing safer cars with the newest and best safety systems available.

Continuing Development of Safety Features

The continuing development of safety features and engineering are driving car makers to give consumers the safety features and peace of mind they want for themselves and their families when they travel on the road. Automakers and engineers understand crashes and vehicle motion which then applies to a better and more advanced understanding during the design and constructing of new vehicle models.

Automobile Windshield Maintenance Tips for Physicians

Join Our Mailing ListCan you see clearly – now?

By Dr. David E. Marcinko MBA CMPvia Nalley Lexus Roswell, GA

Dr David E Marcinko MBA

Doctor – How often do you think about your windshield?

If you’re in the vast majority of doctors and drivers of all sort, chances are you only notice it when a large bug happens to meet an untimely end and creates a goopy mess on your glass.

But, as an insurance agent and Certified Medical Planner, I know there’s a long list of reasons why you should note the condition of your windshield, not the least of which is for clear vision. In fact, a quick visual check with each gas fill-up, and a more thorough inspection each month, is suggested

Think about it: Windshield. It’s a shield against the wind. But, it’s also a shield against many of the dangers that are commonplace out on the highways, such as those pesky bugs, wayward stones, or other roadway hazards. That’s not to mention how unpleasant a drive in the rain or cold would be without a barrier between you and the elements.

DEM's Jaguar

Importance

That’s why it’s incredibly important to take note of your windshield’s condition. Clear vision is of the utmost importance for safety and convenience, but there’s much more to it than that. If you were to be in an accident, your windshield can play a huge role in keeping you safe from the debris that might be flying due to the impact.

Shattered

Needless to say, if your windshield is shattered, there is no option: your windshield needs to be replaced as soon as possible. It’s tough to see out of, not that great for protection from the elements, and if something were to hit the glass, it’ll soon be sitting in the cabin with you. Not only that, but your local authorities might be paying you a visit, as vehicles with shattered windshields are often considered unroadworthy by law.

Cracked

If your windshield is cracked or has unrepaired rock chips, you’re not in much better of a situation. Though a small crack or chip may look harmless, the environment can cause big problems for you and your windshield. Small chips and cracks that go unrepaired can quickly consume the entire glass surface due to a shocking event, such as cold water on a hot day, or even hitting a pothole. Then you’re left with a much more expensive repair.

Road Rash

Road rash, in medicine, is a colloquial term for skin and bone injury caused by abrasion with road surfaces, usually as a consequence of cycling, automobile and motorcycling accidents. In this case, the pepper shotgun-like marks on a windshield.

Assessment

There is good news, however. If your windshield is foggy, discolored, cracked, shattered, chipped – you name it – many car dealers and local independent shops can help. Repairing your chipped windshield doesn’t cost much money and it can prevent an entire glass replacement further down the road. This service usually only takes a few minutes, but you must act fast, as repair isn’t always possible if the damage has spread. And, in many cases, insurance will help foot some, or all of the bill.

Doctors and Speeding Tickets [Myth versus Reality]

Join Our Mailing List
Maximum Speed by State

By Matthew Pelletier [safety consultant]

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA

Dr. Marcinko 1972 VetteThe need for speed across the United States means 100,000 drivers will have a police officer write them a ticket for speeding every day. That works out to 36,500,000 speeding tickets to Americans yearly.

Now, with the average cost per ticket at $150.00, it’s easy to understand the revenue that can come from catching those who disobey the maximum speed limits on the road. 95% of drivers never even contest their speeding tickets, they just pay it and continue on down the road.

Many drivers ignore the fact that speeding tickets raise car insurance rates and drop fuel economy.

The Big Ticket Pay-Off

Because there are so many drivers who break the speed laws, states are required to employee officers who are paid higher salaries than school teachers because each officer writes an average of $200,000 dollars worth of tickets annually. It is safe to say the tickets pay for their salaries.

The Graphic

The infographic below backs up the above information and shows us how the maximum speed limits in states across America differ.

###

 max-speed-limit-by-us-state

Review

  • 1 state, Utah, has a maximum speed limit of 80 mph.
  • 1 state, Texas, has a limit of 85mph which is 25mph faster speed allowed than Hawaii.
  • 19 states have a limit of 70mph, this is the highest majority for a speed limit.
  • 14 states have a 75mph speed limit.

Safety Training

Many states have dot safety training and by requiring driving safety training the importance of obeying speed limit laws and hopefully reducing the number of speeding tickets written can begin to take place. Gradually over time Americans have seen speed limits increase, this is due also to safer cars being manufactured.

Some Tips and Terms for Medical Professionals to Know for Keeping Your Car Healthy … and Saving Money!

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA

Via Source: Nalley Lexus – Roswell, GA

Taking your vehicle in for service is often like going to the doctor for a routine checkup. As a car, and especially Jaguar, enthusiast I should know. There is a photo of my vintage 2000 XJ-V8-L below. My wife calls her “Ellie“; short for elegant.

If your car is having problems, it may be the human equivalent to the flu. It just goes to show how similar cars are, and while their blood may be made up of oil and gasoline, taking care of your car is still a very important task.

Regular Care

Neglect to take care of yourself or your car, and you could be staring down some pretty expensive bills.

When you take your vehicle in for service, the technicians will often perform a multi-point vehicle inspection. Just as a doctor would make notes in your medical chart, the repair technician has a list of areas to check on your vehicle. This record is given to you when service is complete so you can judge for yourself when to make repairs, and prepare accordingly.

The only problem is that many people simply don’t know what these records mean. While the inspections are intended to improve safety and save money in the long run, many owners ignore them and are forced to pay the consequences. No worries, as we’ll take a look at what the multi-point inspection form means and why it’s so important.

Checklist

At the top of the multi-point checklist inspection form are often the vehicle’s make, model, mileage, and the name of the technician performing service. The owner’s contact information is also noted here, as well as the vehicle’s identification number, or VIN for short. This is the vehicle’s version of a social security number and is just as important to your car for legality reasons.

From here on out, you’ll likely see a lot of green, yellow, and red boxes with check marks scattered throughout. To keep things simple, just think of it as a traffic signal: Green boxes that are checked mean that the component was inspected and found to be in good condition, while yellow means that the part will need attention and service in the future, and red boxes denote components requiring immediate attention for safety’s sake.

Issues

What kinds of things and issues are checked? Perhaps the most prevalent item on any inspection sheet is the condition of the vehicle’s tires. You’ll see conditions marked for each tire regarding tread depth, tire pressure, damage, and wear patterns, and whether an alignment check is necessary. You’ll also notice that brake condition is highly important on the inspection sheet. Again, the color of the marked box denotes overall condition of the braking system, and whether or not components such as brake pads need to be replaced.

Jag sedan

***

[The publisher’s classic automobile]

Even More Issus

Aside from the major components such as tires and brakes, other things being inspected are just as important, if a bit smaller and tougher for the normal owner to notice. All fluids such as coolant, transmission fluid, engine oil, brake fluid, and power steering fluid are checked, which is helpful as most owners don’t think to check the condition and levels of these fluids on a normal basis. Other components inspected include windshield wipers, air filters, steering linkage, lighting components, and suspension and steering pieces, among other things.

Assessment

Take it from me – it sure may all sound like a complex task, and one that seems pretty important. That’s because it is. It may just be a piece of paper, but it’s one that can give a great glimpse into the condition of your vehicle.

After all, wouldn’t you want to know if you had health problems?

Why You Can’t Afford Poor Health Habits

Join Our Mailing List

By Rick Kahler MS CFP® ChFC CCIM www.KahlerFinancial.com

Does about $40 a month for a fitness center membership seem beyond your budget? Do you cringe at the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables? Is your wallet too lean to let you buy lean protein? And the cost of a medical checkup is something you don’t even want to think about.

At first glance, the cost of staying healthy might seem way too high. Certainly, maintaining good health comes at a cost. Yet in the long run, maintaining poor health will cost far more.

Good Health Finances

Let’s look at some of the ways it pays financially to take care of your health.

1. Exercise. Before you decide you can’t afford a $40 gym membership, consider this: What do you do with the time you don’t spend exercising? Shop? Watch movies? If you’re like most people, you spend some of that time spending money. Maybe even enough money to cover the gym membership. There are also plenty of free ways to exercise, like running, biking, or walking. In Rapid City, all our hills provide a great workout at no extra charge.

2. Diet. Eating a healthy diet doesn’t have to mean adding expensive organic produce to your grocery bill. You can buy plenty of real food that’s canned or frozen. At the same time, subtract highly processed foods and junk. You may even end up saving money. You’ll save even more if you eliminate health-destroying habits like smoking or excessive drinking. This is a two-for-one: you improve your health and save money at the same time.

3. Preventive checkups. Check your insurance coverage. Under current health care laws, some preventive care is fully covered. And if you think a routine visit to the dentist is too expensive, check out the cost of a root canal or getting a tooth pulled.

Every penny you may save by not exercising or eating right, you’ll eventually spend in additional medications, doctor visits, medical co-pays, medical equipment, transportation, and housing costs.

Poor Health Finances

Poor health will directly affect your health insurance premiums. It will indirectly raise your taxes. Even if you’re healthy, you’ll help pay for those with poor health through Medicaid and Medicare taxes.

Probably the greatest cost of poor health, however, is one most of us never consider. This is the decrease in one’s earning power. For most people, their greatest asset is their capacity to earn. Poor health may hold people back from reaching their potential, or even make them unable to continue to earn any income. A survey of pre-retirees found that 80% of them planned on working after 65. Yet only 19% of people over 65 are actually working. Why? Over 40% are unable to work because of poor health.

Poor Health Financial advantages

There is one financial advantage to poor health: it reduces your life expectancy so you run less risk of outliving your money. However, don’t think that dying younger means you can live more lavishly. A recent study shows the number of unhealthy years—with their related health-care costs—are the same regardless of life expectancy.

Assessment

There are many ways to define wellness, most of which include a combination of financial, emotional, and physical health. If a person isn’t healthy, money alone isn’t of much value. But take money out of the picture, and good health is almost impossible to sustain. Our health and our money have a direct impact on each other.

Since good health is such a vital asset, it makes sense to use some of your financial resources to support it. Part of good financial planning and money management is doing what you can to stay healthy enough to enjoy your financial independence.

On Vacation Cruises for Doctors

Join Our Mailing List

Something for Everyone

By Rick Kahler MS CFP® ChFC CCIM

www.KahlerFinancial.com

My family and I recently took our 20th cruise-ship vacation. Obviously, we’ve found that cruising offers something for each of us. Perhaps more medical professionals can too?

First Time

I was reluctant to go on my first cruise, both because I’m prone to motion sickness and because I couldn’t see why anyone would want to spend a vacation cooped up on a boat. I quickly learned two things that changed my mind. First, a number of drugs, patches, and shots are available to prevent or cure seasickness. Second, if you get bored on a cruise ship, it’s only because you choose to.

Benefits

A major asset of cruising is the 18 hours a day of tailor-made, supervised activities available for kids of various ages, even when the ship is in port. This allows parents plenty of time to tour ports of call unencumbered by cranky kids who couldn’t care less about museums or ancient ruins. Our kids are now old enough that they enjoy most of the shore excursions, but this still leaves them the option to opt out of any port that doesn’t call to them.

Bargains

Most people assume cruising with a family must be prohibitively expensive. We’ve found it to be a highly affordable way to vacation if you follow a few rules.

You can get some incredible cruising bargains, but it does take a little legwork. You will want to get on the email lists of the major cruise lines; my top picks are Cunard, Celebrity, Holland America, and Princess. They send out sales and last-minute offers continuously.

One of the best places to shop and compare deals is Cruise.com. However, when I’ve run into issues like an incorrect booking or an issue with the cruise company, Cruise.com wasn’t much help. I was left pretty much on my own to resolve the problems. I’ve found it’s better to shop the deals online with sites like Cruise.com or Cruisecritic.com, but to place the order with my local travel agent or directly with the cruise company.

Food

It will come as no surprise that one of the main features I look for in a ship is really good food. Many of the newer ships offer alternative dining rooms, where for an additional $25 to $40 per person, you can dine in true gourmet fashion. Some of the best specialty dining is found on Cunard and Celebrity.

Cost Balance

To balance the cost of my specialty dining habit, I select the least expensive stateroom, typically an inside cabin. It’s the same size as 80% of the cabins on the ship; it just doesn’t have a window. You can enjoy the same view—water and sky—from a lounge on deck while you relax with a cool drink. And the cheaper cabin leaves several hundred extra dollars to spend on food and shore excursions. For our latest 12-day cruise, our inside cabin cost $800 per person.

Rates

You typically get the best rates by booking the cruise as far in advance as possible. A small deposit is due upon booking but is totally refundable until about 60 days prior to the cruise date. Often, the prices rise the closer you get to that 60-day deadline, when the cruise must be paid in full and your deposit becomes non-refundable. If you are flexible, another great time to shop for cruises is about 30 to 60 days prior to sailing.

Assessment

A cruise isn’t what we typically think of as a middle-class family vacation. Yet when you figure in lodging, food, and admission fees for visiting major US vacation destinations, cruising can be just as affordable and just as much fun.

Selling into a House Poor Market

When the Local Real-Estate Market is Challenging

Join Our Mailing List

By Rick Kahler MS CFP® ChFC CCIM www.KahlerFinancial.com

An exciting new medical practice opportunity in another state …. Health problems that make one-level living an urgent necessity …. The need to downsize quickly because of a hospitalist job loss ….

These are just a few of the reasons medical professionals might need to sell a home sooner rather than later. The real problem arises when the local real estate market is a challenging one. Here are a few suggestions for anyone looking to sell a house under difficult conditions.

1. Evaluate the urgency of your situation. If you can wait a few months without harming your career, your finances, or your health, that may be the wiser choice. If you can’t make payments, or you need to relocate right away and can’t buy a new house until you sell the current one, waiting to sell is usually a losing proposition.

2. Take a hard look at the costs of waiting. You often can cut your overall housing costs significantly by biting the bullet and selling, rather than paying for two homes until you get the price you want. In addition to mortgage payments, add up expenses like property taxes, maintenance, utilities, and commuting costs.

Example:

For example, suppose you paid $400,000 for a house that’s worth $300,000 in the current market. Selling it now would mean a loss of $100,000, but holding onto it costs $3000 a month. Suppose the market improves by 33% in three years, which of course is not something you can count on. You sell the house then for $400,000. In the meantime, keeping it has cost you $108,000. If you keep the house on the market for a year, then give up and sell at $300,000, you’ve added $10,800 to the original $100,000 loss. You’re often better off to cut your losses and sell.

3. Grit your teeth, hold your nose, and be realistic about the market value of the home you are selling. Your original purchase price has NOTHING to do with current reality. The market is the market, and buyers couldn’t care less about what you paid for the home. They only care about the competition and getting the most home for their money, just as you did when you bought the property.

You need to research the housing market in your area or hire competent help (like an appraiser) to help you determine the market value of your property. Real estate agents can help with pricing, but you must proceed carefully. Some agents practice a technique of “tell them what they want to hear, get the house listed, and then work on getting them to reduce the price.”

4. Think like a buyer as well as a seller. Many sellers forget that the pain of selling at a loss is eased if the replacement home they buy is also valued less than it was several years ago. The loss in the home being sold can often be offset by the bargain price of the home being purchased.

5. Do your best to negotiate with your lender. If your mortgage is more than the sale price of the house, you’ll owe money to the lender at closing. Depending on the circumstances, it may be possible to get the lender to accept a lower payoff. Before the closing date, find out exactly how much you’ll need to pay and know where you’re going to get it.

Assessment

Our reluctance to sell a property for less than the amount we’ve put into it is described as “sunk cost fallacy.” Holding on until we get our money back sometimes works. More often, though, all it does is sink us deeper into a financial hole.

100 Recognizable Jobs in Healthcare

By David Wallace [Search and social media marketer from Anthem, Arizona]

The medical career field has come a long way.

While medicine was once represented by a one-size-fits-all career, today there are over 100 recognizable jobs in the healthcare field. Just as the size of the medical field has increased, there have been medical advancements – and in equality. In fact, 2003 was the first time ever the number of women enrolling in medical school outnumbered men.

Assessment

All of these changes haven’t come cheap, however. The U.S. national health spending was just under $2 trillion in 2006. The above infographic delves into the historical medical advancement milestones, spells out every recognized medical career, provides compelling facts about former and current medical positions, and displays job and salary information for a select few.

As With Medical Decisions – Human Emotions Play a Role in Investment Advice

Appreciating Transferrable Applications in Behavioral Finance

By Sidney A. Blum CFP® CPA/PFS ChFC

By Dr. David E. Marcinko MBA

Whether making medical decisions or financial decisions, both are influenced by emotions. The role of emotions, when making financial decisions, has transferable application in the world of medical decisions.

What Role Should Emotion Play in Financial Advice?

Financial advisors know that one of the most important components of providing financial advice is discussing client goals. Inherently your goals are tied to how you see yourself and in what ways you see your money and net worth as a reflection of yourself. This aspect of your financial life is usually tied to emotions based on perceived positive or negative experiences in your life.

Financial advisors find that they expend considerable time and energy addressing emotions and negative reactions to events in clients’ lives. The goal is to move the focus toward positive steps for reaching client goals. As with other aspects in your life, emotional reactions can distract you from well reasoned actions that benefit in the long run. This is the reason it is beneficial to engage a financial professional to guide you through your financial life circumstances with advice driven by goals rather than emotional negative reactions.

Emotional Intelligence

The use of Emotional Intelligence is a learned skill set. Financial Advisors who are skilled in understanding the four basic emotions that guide them and their clients will find they are more successful in their chosen work!

The Four Basic Emotions

The four emotions are: Glad, Sad, Mad and Scared. These four basic emotions are neither good nor bad – they just “are”!

It is one or more of these emotions that help determine just how “risk adverse” a client will be. It is absolutely necessary for a financial advisor to be aware of the client’s emotional state, whether the client is aware or not. People react emotionally to market downturns. They are probably scared first, but also mad and sad as the market changes. They may get caught up in the market’s emotional swings and lose sight of their own goals and strategy. They think it will always stay that way. Or in an upturn, they believe the market will always stay up. They get caught up in the euphoria of “glad” and again lose sight of their goals and strategy. Many people get caught up in the high market frenzy and end up buying shares that are overpriced; even doctors.

Examples:

Pulling out of the market to protect temporary downside losses in value also means not participating in the upside, which eventually occurs. From the major downturn in the spring of 2009 to the fall of 2009, the market recovered better than 35%. Those who pulled out of the market and stayed out missed out on that portion of their own portfolio’s recovery. Due to reacting emotionally, people buy in up market and sell in a down market – the opposite of what garners them a good return.

Another difficulty is that people lose sight of the fact that a fund investment is in actual companies – some of which survive and some don’t. The nature of the investment market is that there are no guarantees on return of investment. A certain amount of volatility is normal. It is the price you pay for the opportunity of garnering a higher return than with “safe” investments.

And, how safe are “safe” investments? If your “safe” investments are earning 1% while inflation is running at 3% as is the case in 2012, you are losing purchasing power. If the bucket is leaking slowly, it can still end up empty!

So when you feel “glad” about a safe investment, what may be a good feeling may turn out to be a bad investment.

How Advisors Help Clients

How does an advisor help to keep their clients’ focus on the positive steps that can be taken to meet goals instead of reacting solely to current market conditions? How does advisor keep from getting involved in the client’s negative and unproductive emotional reactions?

Financial advisors have seen these situations before, but clients may not be aware that financial markets tend to return to the norm and provide a positive return in the long run. By helping provide a perspective on how the market normally behaves; the focus can be shifted from how the market currently stands, a temporary fluid condition, to the longer range behavior of markets. This provides a sense of stable emotions that allows the client and the advisor to make better financial decisions.

Non-Monetary Goals?

A financial advisor can also help you realize that financial planning is more than investments and that some goals are not solely monetary. It is less stressful and far more productive for people to keep their eyes on their goals, not on the dollar value of their portfolio. In the end, your net worth is not the same as your self‐worth.

Assessment

Because emotions play a significant role in all decisions we make, a major part of an advisor’s job is to help the client keep their focus on the positive steps that can be taken to meet those goals instead of reacting based solely on emotions!

Doctors to Get a Smaller Piece of American Pie?

Join Our Mailing List

And Contracting Lifestyles for Us All

By Rick Kahler MS CFP® ChFC CCIM www.KahlerFinancial.com

“Any way you slice the pie, Americans better come to grips with the fact their lifestyles are going to contract.” That’s the bottom line I’ve gleaned from attending several conferences and listening to some of the nation’s top economists recently.

But, what about Doctors and Medical Professioanals?

New Medical Practice Entrepreneurial Business Rules for Young Physicians [circa 2012]

The Fundamentals

Basically, the US is spending far more than it takes in via tax revenues, creating an annual deficit. The shortfall is covered by borrowing the money, which adds to the national debt. The Treasury Department borrows the money from two sources: private investors (individuals, banks, companies, and other governments) and the Federal Reserve Bank.

The Federal Reserve Bank

Where does the Federal Reserve get money? I’ve written about this before and our Editor has commented on it. They create it with a keystroke, which is the digital-age equivalent of printing money.

The Modern US Monetary System

It’s important to understand that the US government has no intention of ever paying down the US debt. Neither politicians nor economists can agree on whether to stop borrowing (or creating) money to fund the annual deficit. To actually reduce the national debt, we must run surpluses, something we haven’t done in over 15 years and then it was only for one year. We actually have never paid off our debt from WWII.

Deficit Spending

Reducing our deficit spending requires us either to raise taxes, cut spending, or borrow (which includes creating) more money. If we raise taxes to cover the deficit, we will most likely force a recession or depression. We simply can’t take $1.3 trillion out of the private sector without imploding the economy. If we cut spending, we will most likely create a recession or depression, as we simply can’t cut $1.3 trillion of government spending overnight without imploding the economy. If we do both, we will most likely still have a recession or depression.

Print or Borrow

At the moment, Congress can’t agree what to do, so we continue to borrow and print money. An increasing national debt means higher borrowing costs (interest). This means we need more revenues (from taxes or creating more money) to continue to fund Social Security, Medicare, welfare programs, infrastructure, and national defense. Creating (printing) money can lead to rising inflation, though it doesn’t automatically do so, as Japan has demonstrated for 20 years. This results in the devaluation of our global purchasing power, meaning the cost of everything we buy from other countries increases. It’s clear that the most appealing option to politicians and most economists is to continue to borrow and inflate.

Why the Government is Not-Like Medical Professionals

The Message

No matter how you cut and paste these options, one result is the same. Americans’ lifestyles will contract. This will come either from less government support and services, less spendable income via higher taxes, or an erosion of purchasing power from a declining dollar. This is the last message most Americans want to hear. The attitude is like that of the overspender who recently asked me, “How can I cut my expenses but maintain my current lifestyle?” The most honest answer is, “Sorry, but it can’t be done.” True, it’s possible to find creative ways to keep the parts of your lifestyle that matter the most. However, reducing expenses almost always means a lifestyle reduction. This is one reason so many people resist budgeting.

Assessment

For most doctors, lawyers, CPAs, FAs, laborers and all Americans, budgeting means reducing spending, even though that isn’t inherently what budgeting is. In its purest form, it is becoming aware of our current spending patterns and redirecting income to the areas of spending that will best support our desired lifestyle. The more our income shrinks, the more crucial it becomes to redirect it carefully and consciously.

Personal Budgeting Guidelines for Doctors

Conclusion

In other words, if we have to settle for a smaller piece of pie, we’d better make sure we’re buying the kind of pie we really want.

It’s All About Saving Lives and Ankle Bones

By Muhammad Saleem, and

[Editor-in-Chief]

Vintage 2000 Jaguar XJ-V8-LWB Touring Sedan

The Ankle Bone is Connected to the Foot [er –ah] Leg Bone

The talus is one of the important bones that makes up the ankle joint. Over one half of the talus is covered with cartilage–it serves as an important link between the leg and the foot. The talus moves not only at the ankle joint, but also below the ankle and in the midfoot. Therefore, injuries to the talus can affect motion of the ankle and foot joints.

‘Aviators Astragalus’

Talus [astragalus ankle bone] fractures were almost unheard of a hundred years ago. The first series of talus fractures was described, by Dr. WD Coltart, in men who were injured in the British Royal Air Force in the early 1900s. The term ‘aviators astragalus’ was used to describe these fractures that happened as old war planes made crash landings.

Original Historic Reference Link: AA

Today, talus fractures are seen in high speed car accidents when you don’t-buckle up that seat belt or shoulder harness. I’ve seen far too many during my days covering the local Emergency Room.

So, here is an infograhic on the science behind seat belts. It contains some interesting and some encouraging facts that we wanted to share with our ME-P readers and subscribers.

Mechanism of Injury: Hawkins classification Talar fractures (C) iMBA Inc

The Facts

  • National seat belt use has increased from 69% in 1998 to 84% in 2010.
  • Automotive fatalities rank third in terms of lives lost per year, behind cancer and heart disease.
  • Seat belts are responsible for saving between12,000 to 16,000 lives each year.
  • Most crash deaths occur within 25 miles of home and at speeds below 40 miles per hour.

If you are like most folks that I help prepare for retirement, travel is high on that list.  As I’ve grown older, my views on retirement travel have changed. I used to buy into the dream of retirement as the “Golden Years.” I thought of it as the time in life when people are free to do what they want, when they want, with whom they want.

Working with older clients has taught me that my younger views of the glory of retirement were a bit naïve. While certainly some people do experience years of unlimited and unfettered travel, many more don’t find it so easy. Doing “what you want, when you want, with whom you want,” assumes three things we often take for granted: good health, adequate finances, and meaningful relationships.

This seems especially true for command-control type medical professionals.

The Three Legs of Retirement Lifesyle

1. Health. When it comes to travel, good health may not be essential, but it will make your experience more fulfilling and enjoyable. Of course, we aren’t typically in either “good” or “poor” health, but fall somewhere on a continuum. With limited mobility, you may be able to shop at the bazaar in Istanbul, but chances are you won’t hike the Grand Canyon or explore the Acropolis.

Like most things, good health typically requires a conscious intention to create and maintain it. Someone who has a money script of, “When I retire I’ll have the time and money to take better care of myself” may be in for a surprise. Most people who chose not to take care of their health before retirement won’t do so in retirement. As one retired friend said, “If you didn’t have the energy to work out when you were young, you sure won’t have it when you retire!”

What’s even more uncontrollable is the health of those with whom you wish to share your travel adventures. Even if you’ve taken care of yourself, your significant other may be unable to travel. Instead of strolling a beach in the Bahamas, you could end up at home being a caretaker.

2. Money. On average, baby boomers have saved less than $100,000 for retirement. That won’t pay for many around-the-world cruises. If you want to travel after you retire, you need a serious commitment during your working years to live frugally and invest as much as you can. Otherwise, you may end up with just barely enough to cover your basic living expenses.

3. Relationships. If you spend your career working 80-hour weeks, you may accumulate enough assets to fund plenty of retirement travel—but by then you may be traveling alone. Saving for the future is out of balance if it’s done at the expense of enjoying life and close relationships today.

Assessment

By now you may think I’m suggesting you have no better choice than to spend your retirement years at home. Not at all. Here’s one possibility: If travel is one of your dreams, what would happen if you did some of it now? Use your vacation time while you can enjoy yourself. Take that motorcycle trip through Europe or go scuba diving in Belize while you’re in top shape. Do the international travel now when you can better negotiate airports, handle travel delays, and power through jet lag. To save on expenses, plan ahead, use a credit card that awards frequent flyer miles (which you pay off monthly), and use cost-saving options like home swaps and off-season travel.

Then, after you retire, when you need more access to medical care and less demanding travel, you can stay closer to home and enjoy the opportunities in your own back yard.

With the July Fourth Holiday behind us, America’s summer long vacation road-trips begin.

But, anyone looking to buy a new car should be well aware that the cost of a car doesn’t end at the purchase price.

Other Factors

For example, you must consider additional concerns such as: depreciation, fuel costs, insurance, maintenance and repair, invoicing and sales tax.

To help potential buyers with their purchases, we’ve put together the above infographic that outlines the real cost of ownership of various types of cars.

And, always let some other fool take the depreciation hit; buy previously owned [a.k.a. used] cars.

Assessment

Anyone who is a regular reader of the ME-P knows about my vintage 2000 Jaguar XJ-V8-LWB European touring sedan built in Coventy, England. She is a beauty who has never known rain, winter or snow. Mostly highway miles, always garaged. She not only clicks – she ROARs!

The Physician’s Home Mortgage Tax Benefit

Join Our Mailing List

What is the Real Benefit?

Your home is likely your biggest investment. So, knowing exactly what, and how much, you’re paying is just common sense.

Total Costs

But, when medical professionals map out the life of their home mortgage and the total cost — even factoring the best mortgage rate – they often fail to consider the copious tax benefits they will receive.

Going Granular

We take a look at three home-buyer scenarios to determine just how much they will receive in tax benefits over the life of their loan, and the total amount they will have paid when their loan is finally over.

Assessment

Also included is the cutoff point for each filing status for when the standard tax deduction becomes more than the itemized deduction.
