GAS PRICES: Up Again!

Gas prices are continuing to rise to start 2023, and experts say prices are “unlikely to turn around any time soon.” And, the current average for a regular gallon of gas $3.50, according to AAA.

While it’s nowhere near the record $5.01 reached in June, its far more than what the average was heading into New Year’s Day and what prices were one year ago.

And, experts say it’s possible the average price reaches $4 later this year.

Here’s what Covid vaccines have to do with auto insurance

A new study of 11 million adults in Canada revealed that people who weren’t vaccinated against Covid were 72% more likely to get into car accidents where at least one person had to go to the hospital.

Now, that doesn’t mean your jab protects against car accidents, of course, but it does suggest that folks who reject public health recommendations might also reject road rules. The difference was striking enough that the researchers said doctors should discuss road safety with unvaccinated patients, and that car insurance companies might want to factor it into their rates.

“Money Laundering” in Medical Practice?

Charges of money laundering may seem foreign to the practice of medicine. The term “money laundering” evokes visions of a suitcase of drug cash being brought into a legitimate business and being transformed into that business’s receipts and later tunneled through legal channels.

In medicine the route beings with receipt of a claim payment check (i.e., a check as opposed to the drug dealer’s cash). The check is then deposited into the professional corporation’s checking account. The funds are then paid to the physician in the form of wages. Those wages are then deposited into the physician’s personal checking account.

Those funds and other similarly situated funds are then accumulated until a check is written to pay for a new automobile. The money received from the alleged fraudulent insurance claim has successful been “laundered” into a hard asset (e.g., Jaguar XJL-V8 4 door luxury sedan).

DEM with JAGSome automobile owners, like me and other medical professionals, take pride in their cars. Regardless of whether you bought a new car from the showroom or bought your car used, you want to keep your vehicle looking like new for a long time.

Unfortunately, modern life is the enemy of a great-looking car. Tar and stones from roadways can wreak havoc on beautiful finishes. Other drivers can carelessly dent your car in hospital or mall parking lots, and refuse to accept responsibility for the damage. Debris flying out of trucks, birds, and other problems add to the long list of threats to your car.

The Steps

Rather than accepting dings, scrapes and grime on your car as a fact of life, follow these five steps to keep the exterior of your car looking fabulous.

1. Get Covered

Rain, snow, and sunshine can all adversely affect the exterior of your car. You can do little about the weather while driving your car, but when you get home, you can cover your car to protect its beautiful finish. Although garages offer the best protection against outside forces for your car, you might find out that you can get similar results by using a car port or a portable garage. A portable garage is a flexible cover that you can put over your vehicle to protect its exterior while not in use.

2. Paint Protection Film 

Special products exist that help protect the finish of your car at all times, even while you drive. Paint protection film creates a layer of protection between the exterior surfaces of your car and the environment, so your car can withstand an array of road hazards. This type of product eliminates expensive trips to your dealer’s body shop for touchup work and preserves the resale value of your car.

3. Wash Your Car

Although a carwash can put the exterior of your car in jeopardy, it can help prevent harmful grime build up. If you care a lot for your car, you will give it a loving hand-wash, detail and wax periodically to keep its finish looking great. While you wash, you can look for new scrapes and dents that either you or your dealer can quickly repair before they become ugly and embarrassing.

4. Cautious Parking

Parking lots pose some of the most severe threats to auto exteriors. It is my pet peeve. Regardless of how carefully you park, someone else will come along and park too close to your car, giving your car a free dent. Although often minor, parking-lot damage can cost a lot to repair. Motorists these days live with the fear that a claim will cause their insurance premiums to rise, so they might not take responsibility for denting or scraping your car.

It’s time to take parking into your own hands. You can try taking up two spots when you park, making it impossible for other car doors to reach your vehicle. Also, you can park far away from other cars where most people will never park. The long walk will give you valuable health benefits, and the remote parking spot can help prevent damage to your car.

5. Common Sense

Your best defense against scrapes, dents, and grime might reside under your own hat. Common sense should tell you to avoid roads while they undergo paving line-painting work. Avoid attempting to enter narrow alleys and resist the temptation to drive up to your mailbox when you get home at the end of the day. Never drive your car near trees and bushes. Always avoid dirt or gravel roads. Also, keep your garage and carport clear of tools and other objects that can easily fall and damage your car.

Auto manufacturers have always been at the forefront when it comes to new technology. In a very competitive market, being able to develop new gadgets and capabilities is critical when it comes to selling new cars.

While new car models feature the latest developments, engineers are already working on the ‘next big thing.’ So what will be the next big developments in technology to revolutionize the driving experience?

The Ideas

Here are three ideas for doctors and medical colleagues. All from a guy who used to change his own oil.

  1. Cars that can communicate with each other

One of the biggest challenges in road safety comes from the independence that one vehicle has over another. Car drivers are almost entirely insulated from each other and the outside world until disaster strikes. One technology that is trying to address this problem is called Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication – or V2V. V2V technology is now being used by manufacturers as potential technology for future cars.

V2V sends wireless signals about a car’s location, speed, and direction. These signals are, in turn, received by other cars, which interpret this information and make appropriate conclusions. That may be simply to warn the driver, or it could mean applying the brakes. A logical progression from V2V is V2I – Vehicle-to-Infrastructure. This would allow cars to talk to traffic signals and other technology to help further control traffic and speeds.

  1. Airbags that prevent collisions

The airbag is almost certainly one of the greatest car safety gadgets and has saved countless lives since the technology was first developed. Airbags are a great example of a passive safety feature, which means that they reduce the risk of death or injury in the event of an accident. The technology could be used, however, as an active safety feature, which could actually help prevent accidents.

Manufacturers are now experimenting with air bags, which would deploy beneath a vehicle in the event that a potential collision was about to occur. A special coating would help slow the car down, helping the driver to stop much more quickly. By lifting the car up, these bags would also reduce the risk of injury from passengers slipping under seat belts and would lessen any potential damage or injury from bumper-to-bumper impact.

  1. Cars that can drive themselves

The ultimate new technology must surely be one that removes the need for a car to have a driver. Any kind of independent driving technology would, of course, ensure that rules were always adhered to and would remove the margin for human error that almost certainly costs many lives every year. The technology giant Google has invested heavily in the self-driving car to date, although the big manufacturers are also likely to adopt this technology. Who knows whether it will be possible to purchase a self-driving production car within ten years?

As a former licensed state insurance agent, and financial advisor, I know that leasing a car may have advantages to a physician – and others – such as convenient maintenance, low down and monthly payments, no resale responsibility, and tax savings since you pay sales tax on the lease portion rather than the purchase price of the car.

It might also be worthwhile if the after tax borrowing cost of a home equity loan is less than the lease financing rate.

Types of Leases

There are two major types of leases: open and closed ended. In the former type, if the car is worth more than the set price upon expiration of the lease, you are responsible for the underage or coverage. In the more advantages later type, the responsibility of the value of the car is shifted to the leasing company. Other tips on care leasing include:

  • Inform the lessor how you want the auto equipped; do not accept unwanted options.
  • Obtain all delivery, and other, charges in advance, including down payment, security.
  • Deposit, registration fees, interest rates, residual value, rebates and all taxes (sales, personal property, use and gross receipt).
  • Know the capitalized cost (selling price) of the car
  • Know annual mileage limits, usually 15-18,000 miles, and all excess use charges.
  • Avoid maintenance and service contracts, and arrange for your own insurance.
  • Understand that terms, such as money factor, or interest factor, may be used instead of the term interest rate. In this case, simply multiple the rate by 24 for an estimate of the true interest rate involved.
  • Read the contract and understand all penalties, especially for premature or late termination, purchase or return terms, and consequences of theft.
  • Check the lease terms through an independent company, such as First National Lease Systems.

Rough Rules of Thumb

A rough rule of thumb to determine whether to buy or lease involves multiplying all the payments required by the number of months you will have to pay, and add the down payment to yield the total amount of the purchase. Then, multiply the lease payment by the number of months, and add required up-front costs, as well as residual value (end of lease buyout cost), to determine the total amount to lease. Compare the two figures to determine the most economical deal.

Typically, a cash deal is less expensive in the long run, providing a higher after tax rate of return is not available, as an alternate investment, for the funds.

Dis-Advantages

But, there are dis-advantages to auto leasing, too!

Perhaps the worse reason to lease a car is to drive one that you could not otherwise afford to drive. This is because most low monthly payments are only composed of two portions: interest on the note and the prorated cost of auto depreciation. No money is applied to ownership of the vehicle.

Assessment

Finally, beware Spring-Fever and do not likely buy “gap” insurance to cover the difference between what your auto insurer would pay if your car was totaled, and what you would owe the leasing firm. It’s usually too expensive and the risk is minimal.

Remember back in the day when the only way to get information on automobiles was to buy magazines with girls in bikinis washing motorcycles on the cover? With the advent of the Internet, the two subjects were separated. With the advent of social media, the automotive information comes to you.

Top Ten

Here are 10 automotive Facebook pages that we think you might be interested in.

  1. http://www.AutoBlog.com. Interested in Andre Agassi’s customized, Hemi-powered Jeep Wrangler? If you followed Autoblog.com’s Facebook page, you’d have known it was on eBay. Not just any auto blog, Autoblog.com “obsessively” follows the automotive industry, featuring car reviews, auto shows, eBay’s find of the day, and more.
  2. WorldCarFans. WorldCarFans.com is an online magazine that features “daily editorial coverage of emerging products and industry news, spy photos, motor shows, high resolution photos, videos, and more.” Follow their Facebook page to see photos of cars you’ll probably never drive. It doesn’t hurt to dream.
  3. Car and Driver Magazine. Even those with little interest in cars other than it getting them to and from work five mornings a week know that a car that lands on the Car and Driver top automobile lists is a car worth owning. That’s just one reason the Car and Driver Facebook page is a page worth following.
  4. Motor Trend Magazine. Auto manufacturers covet the Motor Trend Car of the Year award, which is why those who want the latest automotive news covet Motor Trend’s Facebook page. Unlike winning the Motor Trend Car of the Year award, however, anyone can gain access to Motor Trend’s Facebook page.
  5. com. Conceptcarz specializes in following vehicles from concept to production. Its in-depth look at automobiles features high-interest automobiles such as the Popemobile, a 1955 Scuderia Lancia, and a 1971 Porsche Spyder as well as automobiles coming out in the next few months.
  6. comEdmunds claimsyou can “enhance your research and shopping experience by connecting with Facebook to get advice from your friends and local car experts.” In addition to researching your next car, Edmunds invites you to review your current or past vehicles.
  7. Motor Authority. Whether you own a high-performance or luxury car or just like to dream, Motor Authority is the authority to consult. Unlike similar blogs, Motor Authority focuses on the products as opposed to industry news. And unlike most Facebook friends who make things up to impress you, the cars on Motor Authority actually exist.
  8. Jalopnik. With thousands of websites and magazines on cars, it’s difficult to carve out a niche. That’s why Jalopnik has been so successful. Jalopnik is “obsessed with the cult of cars” and their Facebook page allows others with like obsession to share their opinion on topics like the coolest cars of all time that never happened, a rapper destroying his Lamborghini, and the best and worst cars you’ve driven.
  9. Autoweek. Autoweek has been online since 1995. It’s obvious their vision includes the use of newer technology to share car news, photos, reviews, and more.
  10. Road and Track. Road and Track provides car news, photos, reviews, and a car lovers community. Get behind-the-scenes peeks at luxury and cutting-edge automobiles years before they’re unveiled. Follow their Facebook page to find this information first.

Dr. DEMWith the possible exception of the handgun, the automobile represents the greatest single item of ownership that is capable of inflicting death, injury and damage. America’s fascination with the automobile has resulted in a marked increase in the power and potential speed of our vehicles.

The latest trend in Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) has also witnessed a substantial increase in damage due to their higher ground clearance and heavier frames. The owners and operators of any vehicle must be financially able to respond to any resulting claims, or they need to transfer the risk through insurance. All states require some minimal coverage for personal vehicles.

Purchasing the Vehicle

Typically, car buyers who wait until the end of the year can score a deal. Buying at the end of the month can also increase negotiating power as dealerships look to move volume, and shoppers in the late summer and early fall may be able to get a deal when the new-model-year vehicles enter inventories.

Also, cold or rainy weather can work to a doctor’s advantage, since bad weather can discourage people from walking around a lot to look at vehicles, potentially giving those who do show up a bit more negotiating power. Even a serious buyer who goes to a dealership near the end of the day may receive a better price as the dealer makes concessions to speed things up so everyone can go home.

So, if you time your car purchase right, and you aren’t buying one of the more popular models or colors, you might save $500 to $2,000 just by waiting until the end of the month or day to make your purchase.

DEM blue tieEach year, physicians and all drivers face the same challenge in the aftermath of wintry weather: potential rusting and other vehicle damage due to the buildup of road salt, ice, and grime. And, this winter was particularly severe; even here in Georgia.

Salt Rage

Road salt serves an important function by actively melting snow and ice that may have formed on the surface of the highway in addition to preventing snow and ice from settling in the first place, improving traction for road users and helping to keep the traffic flowing more safely. The main disadvantage of road salt is that, if left unchecked, it can potentially cause damage to your car.

When road salt builds up on your vehicle, don’t wait to get your vehicle thoroughly cleaned as soon as possible, or use a professional cleaning and detailing service.

Prevention is key to avoid long-term damage

Many experts recommend applying a coat of protective wax, followed by a coat of wax sealant, before road salt buildup, since it is far more difficult to prevent damage to the car after the fact. These products help protect the paintwork from the corrosive effects of road salt.

But it’s not just the paintwork that requires protection. Your brake and fuel lines are very susceptible to damage from corrosion. Therefore, road salt cannot only have damaging aesthetic implications—it can have a significant impact on your vehicle’s safety as well.

Get salty deposits removed quickly

When you have been driving on salted roads, it is important to remove salt deposits as soon as possible. A simple car wash may not always be the most effective option. With professional detailing services though, you can count on getting a thorough cleaning which will help protect your vehicle against possible damage. About the JAGUAR XJ-V8-L [circa 2000]

Dr. David E. Marcinko MBAProof is in the long haul, of course [more than a decade for me], but it appears as if Jaguar finally threw off the curse of unreliability. Credit typically goes to many sources, but leading the pack has to be Jaguar’s prior owner, Ford, which has brought its mighty engineering and quality suppliers into the Jaguar picture. Tata Motors, today.

Based on my experience, the XJ8L represents the highest point in Jaguar’s history. Many think it’s one of the finest luxury sedans ever built. The Vanden Plas, named for a famous British maker of custom automobile bodies, is the most luxurious XJ8L, swathed in chrome, walnut and lambs wool.

As the XJ8 designation suggests, this is a V8-powered Jag. The V12 and inline 6-cylinder engines were discontinued with the 1999 models. The 4.0-liter V8 called a sweetheart was refined in 2000 to reduce emissions. Performance was not affected.

Jaguar’s XJ8 was available in four versions in 2000: Originally priced at $55,780 XJ8, the $60,830 long wheelbase XJ8L, the even more luxurious $64,880 Vanden Plas and the $69,030 supercharged and fully loaded XJR. Those prices compared favorably to those of the $66,970 BMW 740iL and the $74,495 Mercedes-Benz S420; back in the day.

Walkaround

Regardless of trim line, Jaguar’s XJ is a beautiful car. It is stately without being stuffy, and the soft lines are uniquely Jaguar. The 2000 XJ8 continued the design theme set in 1986; Jaguar tried horizontal, contemporary-looking headlights in the 1980s, but they were so universally assailed that the company came back with round lights and they are critical to the overall look.

The Vanden Plas shares the longer wheelbase with the XJ8L, which is 117.9 inches. The standard XJ8 and the XJR ride on a 113-in. wheelbase. Visually, that wheelbase extension is reflected in the length of the rear windows.

The powertrain, suspension and electrical system were new to the sedan. Tata now owns Jaguar and has brought financial support and technology to the company, which greatly benefited the XJ8. Electrical systems, electronics and other traditional Jaguar problem areas have been eliminated since Ford got involved.

The 4.0-liter V8 has double overhead-cams and four valves per cylinder. It produces 290 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 290 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm.

That impressive power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. This electronically controlled automatic adapts to varying driving conditions; it senses whether the driver is cruising along the highway, hot-footing down a back road or climbing a long grade and it varies shift points accordingly for optimum power and efficiency.

The transmission also had a self-regulating adaptive capability; it compensates automatically for the effects of aging by adjusting shift quality based on any slippage it detects. Sport and standard modes can be selected by the driver: The standard PRNDL pattern can be used, or shifts can be made manually by moving the stick to the left.

Automatic Stability Control comes standard on all Jaguars. ASC operates at all speeds, using engine intervention to reduce wheel spin on slippery roads. If a rear wheel starts to spin, the anti-lock brake (ABS) controller signals a computer, which controls the spinning by reducing throttle, retarding ignition timing or cutting fuel to the cylinders. This feature has been a bit problematic for me; and others.

An optional traction control system includes all ASC functions plus brake intervention. This system comes as part of the All-Weather package, which also includes heated front and rear seats. Both types of traction control can be switched off.

The front suspension is fully independent with unequal-length upper and lower wishbones, coil springs, shocks and an anti-roll bar. Double wishbones are also used at the rear with the drive shafts acting as upper links.

They are arranged for anti-lift under braking and anti-squat under acceleration. Variable-ratio rack-and-pinion power steering is speed-sensitive.

Interior

Jaguar’s uniqueness is especially evident inside my vehicle. Getting in is like sliding into an English gentleman’s club, with yards of supple leather, luxurious deep-pile carpeting, and polished wood on the doors, instrument panel and steering wheel. The instruments are simple and understated in keeping with the elegant mood.

Memory functions automatically adjust the driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirror. The driver’s seat moves back when Park is engaged for easy exit. It moves back to the last position it was set when the ignition is turned on. A [fragile] cup-holder pops out from the console, but any drinks in it tend to get in the way of shifting.

Thanks to the long wheelbase of the Vanden Plas, or L model, the rear compartment is huge and legroom is expansive. The bench seat has two depressed seating areas, but a third person would be comfortable in the middle. Airplane-like tray tables fold down from the front seatbacks. A small pod with two rocker switches on the left side of the passenger seat allows rear-seat passengers to move the seat fore and aft and adjust the angle of the seat back. Headroom is just as generous as legroom.

Driving Impression

The unique looks of the XJ8 and L are complemented by a driving experience all its own. Mercedes and BMW share a ride that is more on the firm side and generally feel tight and buttoned up. Lexus and Infiniti offer a softer ride and a more relaxed atmosphere. The XJ8L is wonderfully comfortable with an elegant feel.

Acceleration performance is startling with instant throttle response. On dry pavement, the Jag will light the rear tires up if the traction control is turned off. In a handful of seconds it’s hurtling past the speed limit. Jaguar says the XJ8 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, an impressive feat given its size and weight at 290-horse-power. (The 370-horsepower XJR can do it in a mere 5.4 seconds.)

Shifting is silky smooth, even at full throttle. You can almost feel the transmission signaling the engine to reduce power slightly because a shift is coming. It’s an almost imperceptible pause as the shift is made.

I had some fun with the manual shifting mode, but it seemed superfluous with a transmission that does such a great job on its own. The manual operation is electronically controlled to prevent downshifting at an inappropriate speed. The gear can be selected, but the shift won’t be made until speed has dropped sufficiently.

Differences between Normal and Sport suspension modes are perceptible on rough surfaces and in hard cornering. The Sport setting lets a little more road roughness come through the steering, but gives the car a slightly flatter stance in cornering.

Driving on narrow roads, I discovered that the fenders loom large from the driver’s seat. The left front fender obscures the center line and the right front fender masks the verge to give the driver a feeling the car is taking up all the lane and more. But it isn’t; and we never posed a threat to mail boxes or other vehicles.

The steering lets the driver feel connected to the road, providing a strong sense of control. The wheels do not straighten by themselves after a tight maneuver; they must be brought back in line by turning the steering wheel, just like a race car.

Quiet is an expected part of the luxury quotient, but we didn’t expect this much quiet. It is so quiet inside it’s almost eerie. No wind noise, no road noise, no harmonics from various systems. You can hear the transmission as it reaches a shift point, and there is a sound you realize must be the engine, but it is more like an electric motor humming than a V8 combusting.

Visibility is good in all directions; but I find the headrests make it a bit cumbersome. The C-pillars are quite thin, so rear visibility is above average for cars this size.

Overall, my 2000 XJ-8L provides a very pleasurable driving experience.

Assessment

This is certainly one of the finest cars built – yesterday. Ford’s involvement has undoubtedly had a lot to do with that achievement. The old quality bugaboo seems to be just a memory.

BMW and Mercedes and the rest really can’t be compared with the XJ8, other than in price, because the Jaguar offers something altogether different. In price, however, the XJ8 or L was very competitive. For luxury with a difference, drive a Jaguar XJ8 or L series.

What doctors need to know before their next service

DEM 2013Chances are you might have heard a thing or two about oil prices and all the work it takes to get it out of the ground. You may have even walked into an auto parts store and seen a wall filled with a plethora of different types, viscosities, and brands of oil. Luckily, there are choices to be had, and we’re here to walk you through them.

To Lubricate – Not Burn

Right off the bat, the point should be made clear that motor oil is not meant to be burnt. Sure, oils are used to make the gasoline and diesel fuels that power our vehicles, but motor oil is purely there to lubricate the internals of your engine, not to be burnt as an energy source. It’s that type of burning that causes some of the environmental issues. If you notice a blue smoke emitting from the tailpipe of your vehicle, and the need to add oil every so often, your engine might have a serious problem.

But, for normal motor oil usage, the lubrication of engine internals to keep metal from touching metal while the various bits and pieces move a couple thousand times a minute, there are basically two types – conventional and synthetic.

Conventional Oil

Conventional motor oil has done a great job for the past hundred years or so, and is still largely the norm when it comes to servicing your vehicle. Why is this? For the vast majority of drivers in normal vehicles, conventional motor oil meets the vehicle’s needs while being lower cost. In fact, a quart of conventional motor oil will only set you back half of what a quart of synthetic oil costs.

What are some of the benefits of conventional motor oil? First of all, there’s the cost proposition. And if you drive a normal vehicle, conventional oil might actually be a better choice, as it’s a thicker substance. Also, for that same reason, conventional oil is often the lubricant of choice in higher-mileage engines, where some worn components might not have the ability to seal that they once had.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic motor oil, however, is the new wave of engine lubrication. First designed for aircraft applications in the 1970s, it has also found a home in the engines of many high-performance vehicles. With the requirement of maintaining lubricating abilities at high altitudes and temperatures in aircraft, it was a natural fit. Because of the higher tolerances of aircraft and high-performance engines, the thinner nature of synthetic oil is meant to squeeze into every nook and cranny available, exactly what is needed in these finely-crafted engines.

While synthetic oil might cost twice as much as conventional, it’s thermal properties that keep it from breaking down over time mean that oil changes can occur less often at higher mileage intervals, saving you headaches and recouping some of those costs. Also, due to its thinner nature, it flows easier in cold weather, meaning less warm-up time for your engine, decreasing, once again, headaches and harmful exhaust fumes.

My Kitty Oil

I’ve got a near showroom and mint conditioned 2000 Jaguar XJ-V8-LWB. It  is a full-size luxury sedan, offering sporting drive characteristics, mixed with a classic style and interior comfort. It was available in multiple trims which all came very well equipped with upscale amenities. And, this extended wheelbase version offers much more rear seat leg room for long and winding Georgia road trips. The standard steel engine [not nikasil] in this XJ is a 4.0L V8 which produces 290 hp. The upper and lower timing chain tensioners are original, second generation metal, not plastic.

There is also a supercharged version of this vehicle which bumps output to an impressive 370 hp. Even with all of its power and weight, my XJ-8-L is still rated at over 20 mpg on the highway. Ammenities and upgrades include a mobile phone, Magellan GPS, LoJack theft recovery system, CD and MP-3 players, with internal and external cable antenna for satellite radio.

As for oil, my owners manual calls for 10w30 as preferred, but 10w40 is acceptable for hotter climates like Atlanta. Since my XJ-8 has 90,000 miles on it, I tend to use something a little thicker 15w40 and might used 20-50 come summer if it starts consuming in the high heat.

What a Cat!She is my third favorite female after my intelligent and beautiful wife, and smart and lovely daughter.

Assessment

Now that we know the key differences in the available types of motor oil, which should you choose at your next service? For that, your mechanic will take into account your driving style, vehicle mileage, and other factors, and help you decide what is best for your vehicle.

Some Tips and Terms for Medical Professionals to Know for Keeping Your Car Healthy … and Saving Money!

Taking your vehicle in for service is often like going to the doctor for a routine checkup. As a car, and especially Jaguar, enthusiast I should know. There is a photo of my vintage 2000 XJ-V8-L below. My wife calls her “Ellie“; short for elegant.

If your car is having problems, it may be the human equivalent to the flu. It just goes to show how similar cars are, and while their blood may be made up of oil and gasoline, taking care of your car is still a very important task.

Regular Care

Neglect to take care of yourself or your car, and you could be staring down some pretty expensive bills.

When you take your vehicle in for service, the technicians will often perform a multi-point vehicle inspection. Just as a doctor would make notes in your medical chart, the repair technician has a list of areas to check on your vehicle. This record is given to you when service is complete so you can judge for yourself when to make repairs, and prepare accordingly.

The only problem is that many people simply don’t know what these records mean. While the inspections are intended to improve safety and save money in the long run, many owners ignore them and are forced to pay the consequences. No worries, as we’ll take a look at what the multi-point inspection form means and why it’s so important.

Checklist

At the top of the multi-point checklist inspection form are often the vehicle’s make, model, mileage, and the name of the technician performing service. The owner’s contact information is also noted here, as well as the vehicle’s identification number, or VIN for short. This is the vehicle’s version of a social security number and is just as important to your car for legality reasons.

From here on out, you’ll likely see a lot of green, yellow, and red boxes with check marks scattered throughout. To keep things simple, just think of it as a traffic signal: Green boxes that are checked mean that the component was inspected and found to be in good condition, while yellow means that the part will need attention and service in the future, and red boxes denote components requiring immediate attention for safety’s sake.

Issues

What kinds of things and issues are checked? Perhaps the most prevalent item on any inspection sheet is the condition of the vehicle’s tires. You’ll see conditions marked for each tire regarding tread depth, tire pressure, damage, and wear patterns, and whether an alignment check is necessary. You’ll also notice that brake condition is highly important on the inspection sheet. Again, the color of the marked box denotes overall condition of the braking system, and whether or not components such as brake pads need to be replaced.

Even More Issus

Aside from the major components such as tires and brakes, other things being inspected are just as important, if a bit smaller and tougher for the normal owner to notice. All fluids such as coolant, transmission fluid, engine oil, brake fluid, and power steering fluid are checked, which is helpful as most owners don’t think to check the condition and levels of these fluids on a normal basis. Other components inspected include windshield wipers, air filters, steering linkage, lighting components, and suspension and steering pieces, among other things.

Take it from me – it sure may all sound like a complex task, and one that seems pretty important. That’s because it is. It may just be a piece of paper, but it’s one that can give a great glimpse into the condition of your vehicle.

After all, wouldn’t you want to know if you had health problems?

Good News if You’re a Seller

Smart doctors, nurses and medical professionals never buy a new car; they let someone else take the economic depreciation hit. I did and loved restoring my vintage Jaguar 2000-V8-LWB European touring sedan. What a class act – it doesn’t click – it ROARS!

Yet, used car prices are starting to fall after rising steadily for much of the year. Easing gas prices in much of the nation, and more trade-ins coming back to dealers because new car sales have picked up, are behind the decrease.

How Much?

Used car prices are expected to decline 2 percent in June from May, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association Used Car Guide. Used truck prices are expected to dip 1 percent.

Assessment

Some cars, especially fuel-efficient autos, will see much larger drops, the National Automobile Dealers Association said, as falling gas prices reduce demand for the vehicles.

Guilty – as Charged?

Look, I am a doctor and financial advisor, as well as journalist, editor, surgeon and expert legal witness. I wear many hats and my one indulgence is my pearl white Jaguar XJ-V8-LWB. This classic baby was a gift from my wife who bought it from a singular previous owner [software mogul] in pristine physical and engineering condition after years of meticulous and loving garaged care.

In other words, she let some someone else take the huge depreciation hit on a luxury European touring vehicle that originally sold for up to $100,000 direct from Coventry England. Fortunately, this is not a primary vehicle and I use it only on the weekends, weather permitting. What a joy to drive. Smooth and quiet; just like a hybrid vehicle. And, it is not unusual for nearby folks to stop, stare and even wave at me as I drive by.

So, if rising gas prices are making a huge dent in your wallet, I have a solution to save you money at the pump! Try these simple tips and you’ll find the savings quickly add up.

Tips and Quips

* At least once a month, make sure your tires are properly inflated according to the vehicle’s specifications. Over-inflating tires by even a pound or two might improve fuel mileage in the short run, but it causes tires to wear prematurely. The money you save in fuel is less than what you would pay to replace the tires. But, I am guilty of this tactic because I have Pirelli tires on my Jag.

* Buy the right octane. Look in your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the correct octane level for your car’s engine. Odds are that it will be regular unleaded. Your vehicle should run just fine on regular if that’s what the manual recommends; and it costs less. Again, I use and need 93 plus Octane.

* An annual full-vehicle inspection, including the air conditioning system, may help you avoid costly repairs. I detail and check out my automobile every quarter.

* Vehicles use less fuel the more slowly they travel. Try dropping your highway speed by 10 mph to see big savings at the pump. Here, I follow the rules.

* Extra weight in your vehicle makes it work harder, hence less fuel mileage. If you have a trunk full of junk, empty it out for better fuel economy and to save money. My Jag weighs 4,800 pounds.

* Nothing can put a damper on spring travel plans more than unpredictable gas prices. Search for the best price before you go to fill up. I use a smart-phone and auto navigation system for this chore.

Assessment

With such gorgeous weather, driving your car with sunroof open might be the first thing on your mind. So, just by taking a few small steps, you’ll save money on your vehicle, meaning more money stays in your wallet – while enjoying it more.

Re-Thinking Previously Owned [Used] Vehicles

Have you ever seen a Super Bowl ad touting how much money you could save if you bought something second-hand? Of course not! There’s not a lot of encouragement in our culture to buy used stuff. Even the one exception, a used home, is described as “existing.”

Badge of Honor

Buying used just isn’t cool—that is, unless you’re a wealth builder. Many of them look upon buying used as more of a badge of honor than an embarrassment. Certainly, there are many items that are best purchased new. Toothbrushes, toilet paper, and underwear come to mind. Yet there’s one thing that’s almost always better to buy used—a vehicle.

The Myths

Let’s look at a few common myths around buying a new [previously owned] car.

  • “Buying a used car is just buying someone else’s problem.” That can certainly be true if you don’t do your homework. When shopping for a used car, be sure you research the model’s repair record. The best place for this is Consumer Reports. An inexpensive online subscription will give you loads of detailed information about every year, make, and model. Narrowing your search to the top used car values will significantly increase your odds of buying a great used car. Before writing a check for even a top-rated used car, take it to a trusted mechanic for an evaluation. The money you spend will be well worth the future headaches you save.
  • “Never own a car that is out of warranty.” This is a good idea only if your heart is set on owning one of the many cars ranked as the least reliable. The warranty will come in handy because the car will spend a significant amount of time in the shop. Also, the value of a new car drops rapidly in the first few years. If instead you buy a used vehicle with a high reliability rating the warranty become less important, especially when you consider you’ll be getting a third to half off the sticker price. If you buy a low-mileage, late model car, your savings will be enough to more than pay for the few times you may need to take it into the shop.
  • “When a car hits 80,000 miles it’s time to get a new one because it will start costing an arm and a leg to maintain.” Once again, a top-rated used car will often run reliably for well over 120,000 miles if it’s maintained. Yes, the maintenance will increase, but the rapid depreciation of a new car will cost much more than maintaining an older car. Wealth builders routinely buy late model cars with low mileage and own them for 10 years or more.
  • “I can get a lower interest rate and longer term loan on a new car.” Here’s my rule of thumb: If you need a loan to buy a new car you are probably buying too much car. Those who manage money well create a savings account for replacing their vehicles. That way they can pay cash for a car and drive the best deal. If you must get a loan, borrow as little as possible and pay off the loan quickly. A higher interest rate on a shorter term loan on a used car is still a much better deal than what you would lose in depreciation on a new vehicle.

Assessment

Americans, especially doctors, have a love affair with their cars. Still, for most of us a new car is a luxury, a big splurge best purchased after we’ve attained financial independence. The best way to travel the road to that financial independence is in a used car.

As regular ME-P readers know, I held a property and casualty insurance license for more than 15 years; this included homeowners and automobile insurance.

BTW:  P&C also includes malpractice insurance [doctors and medical professionals] and E&O insurance [accountants, financial advisors, attorneys, etc]. Yep! Med-mal is classified under the property-casualty moniker. I even edited a handbook on the topic. But, I digress.

On the Importance of Automobiles

With the possible exception of the handgun, the automobile represents the greatest single item of ownership that is capable of inflicting death, injury and damage. I learned this first-hand after covering the ER for many years.

America’s fascination with the automobile has resulted in a marked increase in the power and potential speed of our vehicles.  The aging trend in Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) has also witnessed a substantial increase in damage due to their higher ground clearance and heavier frames.  The owners and operators of any vehicle must be financially able to respond to any resulting claims, or they need to transfer the risk through insurance.  All states require some minimal coverage for personal vehicles.

The F.A.P.

The most frequently used policy to insure individual private passenger vehicle risks is the Family Automobile Policy (FAP).   It provides two major types of coverage: liability and physical damage.

Liability coverage includes both bodily injury and property damage. Physical damage, on the other hand, includes comprehensive and collision coverage.

[A] Liability Coverage

The liability section of the FAP is contained within most policies as Part A – Liability and Part B -Personal Injury Protection.

[1] Bodily Injury

Bodily injury liability coverage generally includes sickness, disease and death, and is expressed in dual limits — per person and per occurrence.  Nearly half of the states require minimums of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per occurrence.  Higher limits of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence are often required for consideration of umbrella coverage.

[2] Property Damage

Property damage liability is coverage for damage or destruction to the property of others and includes loss of use.  Liability coverage limits usually include property damage limits as the third number, i.e., $100/300/25.  The coverage here would be for $25,000 of property damage.  As automobiles become more expensive, however, coverage to $50,000 is not considered excessive.

[3] Personal Injury

Personal injury coverage is provided for medical expenses, funeral expenses and loss of earnings for anyone sustaining an injury while occupying your vehicle, or from being struck by your vehicle while a pedestrian.

Liability insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver.  Coverage is extended to the vehicle owner and any resident in the same household.  It also covers anyone using the insured vehicle with the permission of the owner and within the scope of that permission.

Newly acquired vehicles are usually covered automatically for liability for 15-30 [getting shorter] days after acquisition, but physical damage must have been on all currently covered vehicles to be included.  Coverage is also typically extended to a temporary substitute automobile, but only if this vehicle is used in place of the covered automobile, because of its breakdown, repair, servicing, loss or destruction.

[B] Physical Damage Coverage

[1] Comprehensive

Comprehensive physical damage includes coverage for theft, vandalism, broken windshields, falling objects, riot or civil commotion, and even damage from foreign substances, such as paint.  Comprehensive is often described as coverage for all those hazards other than collision.

[2] Collision

Collision involves the upset of the covered vehicle and collision with an object, usually another vehicle, and not enumerated in the discussion of comprehensive.  Colliding with a bird or animal is considered under the comprehensive coverage.

The distinction between comprehensive coverage and collision coverage is more than technical.  The deductible provisions of the FAP often show a considerable difference in these areas, with the collision deductible typically being much greater.

Damage to tires can be covered by provisions in either comprehensive or collision.  Exclusions typically include normal wear and tear, rough roads, hard driving or hitting or scraping curbs.

[C] Repairs after the Accident

Following a collision, the insurance company will assign a claims adjuster to determine the extent of damage and the cost of repairs.  If these repairs exceed the estimated value of the vehicle, it may be “totaled.”  Experience tells me that the value of the vehicle to the owner nearly always exceeds that estimated by the insurance company.

[D] Uninsured / Underinsured Motorists Coverage

Uninsured motorist coverage provides protection from the other driver who is operating his/her vehicle without any insurance coverage.  It covers expenses resulting from injury or death as well as property damage.  There are currently a dozen states where it is estimated that over 20 percent of the vehicles on the highway are being operated without any insurance.  This is not coverage that should be rejected when buying automobile insurance.

Underinsured motorist coverage provides protection from the other driver who purchased only the state-mandated minimum liability insurance coverage.  Again, this is not coverage that the medical professional or healthcare practitioner should thoughtlessly reject when buying automobile insurance.

Assessment

The medical professional is strongly urged to consider purchasing replacement cost coverage rather than accepting actual cash value car insurance, which is the depreciated value of the vehicle. The cost may be higher for this coverage, but accepting a larger deductible will often make up the difference. Paying a little more towards the deductible could easily be worth it, if the damage is extensive.

Or, if you have a classic pristine Eurpean touring sedan [2000 pearl-white Jaguar, XJ-V8-L], built for the Queen in Coventry England, like I do. Jay Leno is my hero!
