Want to know when you’re going to die?

TODAY IS “ALL SOULS DAY”

[By staff reporters]

All Souls Day is a holy day set aside for honoring the dead. The day is primarily celebrated in the Catholic Church, but it is also celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and a few other denominations of Christianity. The Anglican church is the largest protestant church to celebrate the holy day.

Most protestant denominations do not recognize the holiday and disagree with the theology behind it.

So – When are you going to die?

By MIT TECHNOLOGY REVIEW

Humans have been trying to find ways to calculate exactly how long they’ll live since time immemorial. We’re yet to find a reliable predictive formula, but that is starting to change.

The science: Certain chemical changes to cytosine – one of the four DNA bases or “letters” of genetic code—can help tell whether someone’s body is aging unusually fast or slowly. Steve Horvath, a biostatistician at UCLA, tested this “epigenetic clock” theory on 13,000 blood samples collected decades ago, from people whose subsequent date of death was known. The results found that the clock can be used to predict how long someone will live and how much of that life will be free of age-related disease.

Inheritance: Your genes dictate about 40% of the “ticking rate” of your mortality clock, while the rest comes down to lifestyle and luck, according to Horvath. There are things we can do to delay aging —including getting enough sleep.

Privacy: Insurance companies, hospitals and palliative care teams are already finding this sort of research useful, but there are a lot of issues around privacy yet to be untangled. Your likely life span is information we’d consider very personal, yet existing regulations and privacy policies don’t even consider the possibility of such information. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about it.

Halloween (also spelled Hallowe’en) is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31st.  It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints.

Today, it is largely a secular celebration but some have expressed strong feelings about perceived religious overtones.

Here are two interesting and popular ME-P articles for this Halloween season.

Money Beliefs and Luxury Lifestyle TV

Money Beliefs and Luxury Lifestyle TV

By Rick Kahler CFP

***

If you watch TV shows that flash luxury products and feature rags-to-riches stories or the lives of the rich and famous, will you become more materialistic and cold-hearted toward the poor? You might, according to an August 1 story by Sarah Knapton in The Telegraph, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians may make viewers cold-hearted towards poor, study suggests.” It cites research done by the London School of Economics showing that “just 60 seconds of exposure to materialistic media is enough to significantly increase anti-welfare sentiment.”

The article mentions two studies. In the first, participants were divided into two groups. One group was shown clips of luxury products, rich and famous people, and rags-to-riches stories. The other group saw neutral images of London sights, natural scenery, and headlines about dinosaurs. Both groups were then asked questions that evaluated their attitudes toward wealth and success, government benefits, and impoverished people. The group shown the materialistic media scored more negative attitudes toward welfare and welfare policies.

In the second study, participants were asked if they regularly viewed shows like The Apprentice and X-Factor. Those who did were found more likely to hold materialistic and anti-welfare attitudes.

I have some doubts about these studies. For one thing, they mix data on two very different issues—an acute reaction to a stimulus and a chronic behavior.

In the first study, both groups were exposed to stimuli and their reactions were immediately measured. What the research apparently did not do was follow up in one day, one week, or one year to see if the negative anti-welfare impact persisted. My hunch is that, had they tested the two groups one week later, there would have been no significant difference between them in their materialistic or anti-welfare sentiment.

My belief that this is a short-term phenomenon is supported by similar research in neuropsychology made popular by the field of behavioral finance. For example, if two groups are asked to guess the price of something and one group is given a random number before guessing and the other isn’t, the guesses of the first group will be closer to that number than those of the second group. This is called Anchoring, which lasts but moments. A person’s ability to price the object into the future is not permanently impacted.

This is a separate issue altogether from the second study. Here we are talking about a long-term, chronic behavior. People who regularly watch these shows are drawn to them, in part, by their beliefs about money, known in financial therapy as money scripts. I would make the case that many regular viewers held money scripts of valuing wealth and materialism before they watched the shows. While it is unlikely viewing the show created these beliefs, it probably reinforced them.

Can media affect our attitudes toward money? This is a chicken-and-egg question. What comes first? Does the money script attract the viewer to the show, or does the show form the money script? My experience suggests it’s mostly the former.

Perhaps a more accurate headline summing up these studies might have been, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians may give viewers a momentary cold heart toward poor, study suggests,” or “The Apprentice attracts viewers more given to materialism and a cold heart toward poor, study suggests.”

The media play to what their consumers find attractive. I am guessing in an anti-materialistic and pro-welfare culture these shows would attract fewer regular viewers. While the media certainly can influence our attitudes toward money, it’s more probable that our collective attitudes toward money affect the media more than the media affects us.

R.I.P: Stephen Hawking [Age-76]

On Stephen Hawking

[By staff reporters]

The acclaimed and inspirational British physicist has sadly died at the age of 76.

His legacy

Hawking discovered that the Big Bang started from a singularity, and that black holes aren’t totally black but radiate energy, among plenty of other things.

His illness

He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 1963, aged 21. Doctors told him at the time that he would live for just 2-3 years.

His words: “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Be curious, and however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do.”

Becoming financially independent to help other people?

Help both the planet and the poor

By Rick Kahler CFP®

Here’s is how you can help both the planet and the poor: Live frugally and save for your own old age.

In other words, become a millionaire or close to it.

  • Are you concerned about saving the planet?
  • Would you like to see more government funding for research into projects like developing clean energy?
  • How about helping people who cannot help themselves?
  • Would you like to see more government spending for marginalized populations?

It’s easy to see that reducing your lifestyle can reduce your carbon footprint to help the planet. But how does your becoming financially independent help other people?

It means you will not become a consumer of precious government or charitable resources that could be redirected to making a difference in both preserving the planet and eliminating poverty. If you don’t provide for yourself financially, chances are good that you will end up dependent on government funding for your existence.

Take long-term health care, for example

Forty-five percent of all nursing home spending is funded by our tax dollars. Of Medicaid’s $565 billion dollar annual budget (2016 figures), 20% or $113 billion goes for nursing home care. The federal government—meaning we the taxpayers—picks up the tab for 65% of all people in nursing homes. Medicaid pays for about 1 million of the some 1.5 million nursing home beds in the US.

The average annual amount the government spends is $113,000 for a semi-private room. What’s interesting is the actual average cost of a semi-private nursing home room is around $225 a day, or about $82,000. I am not sure where the other $31,000 goes, but my hunch is that it’s inefficiently spent on the salaries of those who administer the program. So, if you can save enough to pay your nursing home costs, you get an extra bonus of saving an additional $31,000 in government spending.

One way to relieve the government of the cost of your nursing home care is to purchase long term care insurance. According to Morningstar, the average annual premium for long-term care policies being sold in 2014 was $2772. While this isn’t cheap, neither is it prohibitively expensive for many middle-class Americans, especially compared to common expenditures like unlimited cell phone service or annual vacations.

In addition to direct payments like Medicaid, there’s another cost to society from those who fail to or are unable to provide for their own old age. This is the need for family members to become unpaid caregivers. For 2013, Morningstar estimated the dollar value of such care at $470 billion. If caregivers quit jobs or take time off, or if they are forced to take Social Security benefits early, the result is lost tax revenue and increased government spending. In addition, those who sacrifice their own resources to care for parents may carry a pattern of retirement scarcity on into the next generation.

The wealthy

It appears to be a common misperception that “the wealthy” are somehow a drain on society who use more than their fair share of resources. There may be some validity to this perception for the relatively few uber-rich with multiple homes and conspicuously lavish lifestyles.

However, quite the opposite is true for the much greater number of ordinary people who accumulate enough wealth to take care of themselves until the end of their lives. When you are able to fund your own lifetime care, you do not need your family members and fellow taxpayers to provide the resources you require. And at the end of your life, you might even be able to bequeath some of your estate to help the poor and the planet.

COUPLES: “one is a spender and one is a saver”

On Couples and Money

By Rick Kahler CFP®

“With couples, usually one is a spender and one is a saver.”

I’ve heard this many times, and I’ve even said it myself. Money issues are one of the most common areas of stress between partners, and conflicting views over spending and saving is a major contributor.

However, a recent study done by Brigham Young University and Kansas State University led me to see marital money issues in a new way. The study, published last year in the Journal of Financial Planning under the title “Tightwads and Spenders: Predicting Financial Conflict in Couple Relationships,” found that partners’ perceptions of each other’s money behavior often does not match reality. The fact that you may see your partner as a spender has actually no correlation to whether they are. Yet there is a huge correlation between thinking your partner is a spender and experiencing financial conflict in the marriage.

Study

Ashley LeBaron, a BYU graduate student and co-author of the study, said this in a BYU News article published August 15, 2017: “The fact that partners’ perceptions of each other’s spending behaviors were so predictive of financial conflict suggests that when it comes to the impact of finances on relationships, perceptions may be just as important, if not more important, than reality.”

As it turns out, the highest contributors to financial conflict between partners weren’t disagreements over how much to fund children’s education, save toward retirement, or spend on a vacation or a car. It was whether one partner considered the other partner a spender or a tightwad—regardless of their actual spending patterns.

If you want to bring more harmony and objectivity around money to your couple-ship, you might consider taking the following steps:

1. Define “spender” in your own words. What does it mean to you if someone is a spender?
2. Define “tightwad” in your own words.
3. Think of your definition of “spender.” Write down all the one-word feelings that you can identify when you think of a spender.
4. Do the same with your definition of “tightwad.”
5. Write a list of all the evidence you can think of that your partner is a spender. Stick with the facts, not a projection. For example, a statement that “my partner spends too much money on coffee” is a projection. Instead, “Three days a week, my partner spends $2.50 on an Americano at Starbucks,” is an observation.
6. In the same way, list all the evidence that your partner is a tightwad.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6, but about yourself.
8. Look back at the one-word feelings you listed in step 3. Which of those might your partner feel about your spending?
9. Consider which of the one-word feelings you listed in step 4 that your partner might feel about your saving.
10. Now, give this exercise to your partner to complete.

***

***

Finally, select a time to compare answers. Choose one of you to go first while the other listens with absolutely no interruptions, cross talk, or comment. This is hard, but crucial. When the first partner is done, then switch roles without any comments.

If your partner isn’t willing to participate, consider doing this exercise on your own. The insight you gain could be valuable.

Assessment

If the level of money conflict in your relationship is so high that you can’t even imagine doing this exercise together, you also might consider setting up an appointment with a financial therapist. Conflicts over money can be resolved, but it often takes both partners having the willingness do so. Even more, it often takes one or both partners having the courage to ask for help.

About Medical Alert Tattoos

It’s all about the …. INK!

[By staff reporters]

A medical alert tattoo is quite different from a scar tattoo. People dealing with a serious medical condition, such as diabetes can have a tattoo showing that they are a diabetic, thus meaning a higher likelihood of getting help should they fall under attack and not be able to communicate their problem verbally.

Alert medical tattoos offer a permanent solution as compared to medical alert bracelets. Bracelets have been known to break, and that not only means waiting for a new bracelet, but usually having to spend more money to get a replacement as well. With the consent of their parents, these medical tattoos have even been known to be a solution for children dealing with these kinds of diseases.

People experiencing allergies that can lead to major complications may also consider medical alert tattoos. People who have a penicillin or peanut allergy for example, can benefit from this type of tattoo in the event they eat something that has peanuts in it without their knowledge. This can result in something called anaphylaxis, which is a condition that requires immediate attention and treatment.

On Extreme Poverty

Join Our Mailing List

Known / Unknown to Health Professionals?

Rick Kahler MS CFPBy Rick Kahler MS CFP®

Do you think the world is getting better, or worse, or neither?

Based on a recent survey by Max Roser of the University of Oxford, you probably said “worse.” That was the answer from about 95% of the survey respondents, who were from Sweden, Germany, and the US.

To be fair, it might have been good to put a time frame in that question. How would you have answered if the time frame was the last 70 years, 40 years, or 10 years? I suspect if people were asked if the world is getting better based on how it was 200 years ago, there may have been more positive answers.

The data time-line

In a recent article on ourworldindata.org, Roser noted that in 1820 only a miniscule slice of the elite enjoyed higher standards of living. Over 99% of people lived in extreme poverty, which the researchers measured as earning less than $1.90 a day. That number is adjusted for inflation, different price levels in countries, and currency differences.

Things really improved over the next 130 years. In 1950 (nearly 70 years ago) only 75% of the world was living in extreme poverty. In 1981 (nearly 40 years ago) that number was down to 44%. In the last ten years, the number of those living in extreme poverty dropped from 21% to 10%. That is amazing, especially when we consider that two-thirds of those in the US think extreme poverty has almost doubled in recent years.

As surprising as this data is, Roser adds another factor: the fall in extreme poverty is even more notable when we consider that the world population increased seven-fold in the last 200 years. Conventional wisdom may have assume such an increase in population would have had the opposite effect.

Change

What changed globally to produce such an incredible increase in the global standard of living in the light of exploding population growth? The world experienced an unprecedented period of economic growth and increasing productivity.

What was behind the economic growth?

My guess is that an experiment in democracy and free markets begun about 250 years ago with the founding of the United States had a lot to do with it.

It’s interesting that we’ve seen nothing about this trend in the media or from politicians. Wouldn’t a headline reading, “Extreme Poverty Rate Falls 50% in Ten Years” be noteworthy? Or how about “130,000 Fewer People A Day Are In Extreme Poverty Since 1990?”

During the same 200 year period illiteracy dropped from 88% to 15%. Global child mortality decreased from 42% to 4%. The number of those living in democratic societies rose from 1% to 53%. Even global income inequality as measured by the Gini coefficient, while still very high, fell by 5% between 2003 and 2013.

We have heard nothing about any of that. Our news and our politicians do not emphasize how the world is changing but rather what is wrong in the world. Roser notes that, “The media focuses on single events and single events are often bad.” Most of us know intellectually that sensationalism sells and a steady diet of sensationalism can cause us to lose perspective.

***

Assessment

The stories we hear of how financial well-being is in decline are not true. Such misinformation could be one of the biggest global threats we face. Believing that the poor are getting poorer and the rich growing richer on the backs of the poor polarizes and divides us. If the truth of the progress we’ve made became common knowledge, it could provide a foundation of collaboration and hope which would serve to unite us to continue the progress.

So, what better way to have a little fun than to watch these medical students strut their entertainment stuff!

Macro-Economic Mid-Year Update

Join Our Mailing List

Last Week’s Headlines

By Michael Green [TGA Capital Management]

www.tgacapitalmanagement.com

Businesses are paying more for goods and services as the Producer Price Index increased 0.5% in June, the largest increase in a year, according to the Labor Department. Higher energy costs pushed the increase. Since businesses usually pass on increases in the cost of goods and services, it’s likely consumer prices will increase as well, driving inflation upward.

Here is a mid year economic summary:

  • In fact, consumer prices did increase in June–just not at quite the same rate as producer prices. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.2%, following the same increase in May and a 0.4% gain in April. Over the last 12 months, the CPI has increased 1.0%. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, consumer prices still increased 0.2% in June and 2.3% from a year earlier.
  • Consumers continue to spend as retail sales increased in June, jumping 0.6% from the previous month and 2.7% ahead of last June. This follows a 0.2% (downwardly revised) increase in May. Excluding autos and gas, household spending climbed 0.7% from May. Output excluding autos remained the same as the prior month. This report, coupled with increases in consumer and producer prices, provides optimism for the economy over the summer months.
  • The manufacturing sector experienced a noticeable uptick in June, as industrial production increased 0.6% after falling 0.3% in May. Manufacturing output rose 0.4%, largely due to an increase in motor vehicle assemblies. June’s gain is the largest monthly increase since November 2014.
  • The number of job openings decreased by 345,000 to 5.5 million on the last business day of May, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. April’s rate was 5.8 million. May’s job openings rate is the lowest of the year. The quits rate was unchanged at 2.0% as workers continue to remain at their present jobs. It’s important to remember that June’s employment situation report showed significant improvement on the labor front.
  • U.S. import prices rose 0.2% in June from May, largely due to a spike in petroleum prices. Exports also increased in June, rising 0.8% following increases of 1.2% in May and 0.4% in April. The 2.4% rise in export prices for the second quarter of 2016 was the largest three-month advance in export prices since the index rose 2.7% between February and May 2011.
  • The Treasury Department reported a $6.3 billion budgetary surplus in June, following May’s $52.5 billion deficit. However, over the first nine months of the fiscal year, the deficit is up almost 27%, at $400.9 billion, over the same period last year ($316.4 billion).
  • Largely influenced by the immediate negative impact of the Brexit vote, the Index of Consumer Sentiment fell from 93.5 in June to 89.5 in July.
  • In the week ended July 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment insurance claims remained level at 254,000, unchanged from the prior week’s level. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate remained at 1.6%. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ended July 2 was 2,149,000, an increase of 32,000 from the previous week’s revised level.

HEALTH PLAN BEHIND NEW HOSPITAL RANSOM-WARE INCIDENTS

HEALTH PLAN BEHIND NEW HOSPITAL RANSOM-WARE INCIDENTS

by Derrick Smithsonian for HealthTurnup

Hospitals downloaded ransomware with their electronic payment from a plan that demanded discounts for out of network services
ON THE HEELS OF a highly-publicized ransomware attack experienced by a southern California hospital, HealthTurnup has learned a number of additional hospitals have been victims of a “copycat” hospital ransomware campaign that has been orchestrated by a health plan seeking reductions in their out-of-network payments.

According to sources, the new hospital ransomware incidents all involve malware downloaded when accepting electronic payment from the plan for out of network services, that locks the hospital’s information system by encrypting virtually all files, until a ransom is returned equal to a percentage discount of the previously paid out of network charges.

Sources indicate that the FBI cut short an investigation of the incidents after determining there was proper disclosure provided in the health plan’s electronic payment page, that accepting download of payment of full charges for the out of network services would also provide “download of a suite of complimentary payment adjustment software.”

“Who reads the legal fine print in the tiny font that accompanies those electronic payment download pages provided by the plans?” a representative for one of the impacted hospitals complained. “And the galling thing is, the health plan demanded their discount refund in bitcoins. We’re still issuing refunds with paper checks. Do you know what a pain it is to manually adjust one transaction to bitcoins?”

Our Brain, Computer Operating Systems and Financial Decision Making

Join Our Mailing List

Our default brain operating system is programmed to make poor financial decisions?

Rick Kahler MS CFPBy Rick Kahler MS CFP® http://www.KahlerFinancial.com

If you’ve ever struggled to learn new software or unravel a computer problem, you know that part of the frustration of dealing with technology is its logic. Computers respond according to their default operating systems. If we want them to do something different, they need to be reprogrammed.

In the same way, the default operating systems of our brains are actually programmed to make poor financial decisions. This is normal. Making good financial decisions actually takes a deliberate reprogramming of your internal operating system. Here is why.

Our brains are divided into three sections: the reptilian brain, the mammalian brain, and the prefrontal cortex.

The reptilian brain is the oldest, most primitive part. In a talk at the Financial Therapy Association’s annual conference in July 2015 in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, Dr. Ted Klontz explained that the reptilian brain continually scans for threats. It is waiting for death to come walking through the doorway, so it lives in anxiety. Since anything positive is not a threat, it’s oblivious to the positive. It also doesn’t understand the concept of the future, but lives only in this moment.

Left to its own programming, then, of course the reptilian brain might have a problem making monthly contributions to a retirement account. Saving for the future isn’t a concept it even understands. Further, it sees taking money out of the checkbook as a threat because that leaves fewer resources to battle death when it comes through the doorway. Making things even worse, the reptilian brain is nearly impossible to change. The best most of us can do is manage it.

***

Brain view

***

This brings us to the mammalian brain, whose only job is to manage the anxiety of the reptilian brain. It does so in three ways:

  1. Remove the threat (fight),
  2. Run away from the threat (flight),
  3. Get small and disappear to hide from the threat (freeze).

Most of us favor one of these three responses to threats, and according to Dr. Klontz we select our preferred response by the age of six. When the mammalian brain responds, it processes exponentially faster than the thinking part of our brain, the prefrontal cortex. Because of the ease with which the mammalian brain responds to threats, 90% of all decisions—including financial ones—are made here.

With the mammalian brain managing the anxiety of the reptilian brain, we have a more sophisticated response to our potential retirement plan contribution. Some of us will verbally fight and defeat any messenger (article, employer, financial advisor, spouse) that suggests we drain our current resources to send money into a black hole. Others will simply flee the messenger by diverting our attention to the Monday night football game or any task at hand. A portion of us will just freeze into a glassy-eyed stare. Nobody is home.

That leaves us with our only hope, the understanding and thinking part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex. This part of our brain doesn’t fully come on line until the mid-twenties. It functions as the parent of the other two brains, but unfortunately it processes information very slowly and with great effort.

Assessment

Fortunately, this is the brain that is easiest to change. By training it to become aware when the lower parts of the brain are about to make a hair-trigger decision, we can stop the ensuing action long enough to add logic as well as emotion to the process.

More:

Reprogramming the brain takes time, practice, and using resources like education, mentors, advisors, and counseling. Eventually, wise financial choices like saving for retirement can become the new default programming, even in spite of the reptilian brain.

About Moritz Moszkowski

And …. the Black Swans

[By Vitaliy Katsenelson  CFA] write-us@imausa.com

Today I wanted to share with you undeservedly underrated and under-recorded composer that in my not so humble opinion deserve to be over-rated and over-recorded.

He lived in the golden age of the late romantic, early modern period of classical music, that is, the late 19th to early 20th century.

I want to share with you the Piano Concerto in E minor by Moritz Moszkowski (part 1part 2 and part 3), German-Jewish composer born in Breslau, Prussia (now Poland).

According to that most trusted source, Wikipedia, he was very popular in his day but died in poverty, “sold all his copyrights and invested the whole lot in German, Polish and Russian bonds and securities, which were rendered worthless on the outbreak of the war.”

Now, I am not trying to draw parallels between the early 20th century and today, but when he poured his life savings into German government bonds, he probably could not imagine that they would be wiped out – there is a black swan for you!

On Hiring Home Contractors

Join Our Mailing List

By Rick Kahler MS CFP http://www.KahlerFinancial.com

Rick Kahler MS CFP

Doctors Beware!

This time of year, half the homeowners in town are trying to hire landscapers. All of us check our phones even in the middle of meetings or medical appointments, because we desperately hope it might be the yard guy calling back.

As my wife and I work on our yard, however, I’m proceeding with caution. Several years ago I hired a landscaper and paid him $2,000 up-front as a down payment on the work. We never saw a single bush, tree, or shrub. We never saw him or the money again, either.

In response to my recent column about filing consumer complaints, I heard from a reader who is struggling to get recourse from an unethical building contractor. It’s a horror story about bullying, failed inspections, outrageous costs to fix shoddy work, and an expensive lawsuit.

Both this homeowner and I made the same mistake: we trusted someone who turned out not to be trustworthy, and we paid in advance.

Whether you’re hiring someone to redesign your yard, build or remodel a house, create a website for your business, or provide any other kind of service, you can’t afford to just assume that person is trustworthy. It’s your responsibility as the customer to protect your interests in the transaction.

The Hiring List

Here are some ways to increase your chances of finding ethical and competent contractors before you hire anyone:

  1. Be wary of anyone who seems to lack experience or qualifications. Even someone just starting a business should be able to show you related experience or training.
  2. Look for someone who is professional and businesslike. That includes putting estimates and quotes in writing, providing references, and focusing on helping you create what you want rather than telling you what you should want.
  3. Say “no, thanks,” immediately to any contractor who shows a cavalier attitude about requirements like licensing, permits, and inspections.
  4. Use caution with contractors who don’t apply in their own businesses the skills they are trying to sell to you. If you need a website, for example, don’t hire a developer whose own site is a mess.
  5. Get references, and contact them. Ask specific questions about the kind of work the contractor did for them and what the experience was like.
  6. Don’t hire out of desperation, as I did with my so-called landscaper. If you have trouble finding someone to do the work you want done, it’s all too easy to skip essentials like checking references when a candidate does show up. That oversight could cost you dearly.

***

 home

***

The Project List

Once you do hire a contractor, continue to protect yourself as the project proceeds:

  1. Never pay in advance. Reputable building contractors, for example, should have the resources to buy materials up front. For any services, don’t pay in full until the work is done to your satisfaction. If there is a problem, withholding payment is often your best leverage for getting it resolved.
  2. Pay attention throughout the work. Make sure you get copies of all permits and inspection reports. Insist on fixes for small problems, and follow up to make sure they’re taken care of. As the customer, you should never feel like a trespasser on your own project.
  3. Address serious problems promptly, in a serious way. If issues are not being resolved, don’t hesitate to file complaints with consumer protection agencies, contact professional associations, or involve an attorney.

Finally, when you do receive quality work or service, acknowledge it. Express your satisfaction, write references or positive reviews, and recommend the business to others.

Assessment

One way to discourage predatory or incompetent contractors is to support ethical, trustworthy professionals.

Anyone looking to buy a car should be well aware that the cost of a car doesn’t end at the purchase price.

You must consider additional concerns such as: depreciation, fuel costs, insurance, maintenance and repair, and sales tax.

This is especially important for doctors and new medical practitioners who may have many other financial responsibilities.

3 Technologies That Are Revolutionizing the Driving Experience

Join Our Mailing List

Update for Doctors and Medical Professionals

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

[By Nalley Lexus Roswell, GA]

Dr. David E. Marcinko MBA

Auto manufacturers have always been at the forefront when it comes to new technology. In a very competitive market, being able to develop new gadgets and capabilities is critical when it comes to selling new cars.

While new car models feature the latest developments, engineers are already working on the ‘next big thing.’ So what will be the next big developments in technology to revolutionize the driving experience?

The Ideas

Here are three ideas for doctors and medical colleagues. All from a guy who used to change his own oil.

  1. Cars that can communicate with each other

One of the biggest challenges in road safety comes from the independence that one vehicle has over another. Car drivers are almost entirely insulated from each other and the outside world until disaster strikes. One technology that is trying to address this problem is called Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication – or V2V. V2V technology is now being used by manufacturers as potential technology for future cars.

V2V sends wireless signals about a car’s location, speed, and direction. These signals are, in turn, received by other cars, which interpret this information and make appropriate conclusions. That may be simply to warn the driver, or it could mean applying the brakes. A logical progression from V2V is V2I – Vehicle-to-Infrastructure. This would allow cars to talk to traffic signals and other technology to help further control traffic and speeds.

  1. Airbags that prevent collisions

The airbag is almost certainly one of the greatest car safety gadgets and has saved countless lives since the technology was first developed. Airbags are a great example of a passive safety feature, which means that they reduce the risk of death or injury in the event of an accident. The technology could be used, however, as an active safety feature, which could actually help prevent accidents.

Manufacturers are now experimenting with air bags, which would deploy beneath a vehicle in the event that a potential collision was about to occur. A special coating would help slow the car down, helping the driver to stop much more quickly. By lifting the car up, these bags would also reduce the risk of injury from passengers slipping under seat belts and would lessen any potential damage or injury from bumper-to-bumper impact.

  1. Cars that can drive themselves

The ultimate new technology must surely be one that removes the need for a car to have a driver. Any kind of independent driving technology would, of course, ensure that rules were always adhered to and would remove the margin for human error that almost certainly costs many lives every year. The technology giant Google has invested heavily in the self-driving car to date, although the big manufacturers are also likely to adopt this technology. Who knows whether it will be possible to purchase a self-driving production car within ten years?

Advantages, Disadvantages and Types

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

Dr. Marcinko 1972 VetteThe Rites of Spring!

As a former licensed state insurance agent, and financial advisor, I know that leasing a car may have advantages to a physician – and others – such as convenient maintenance, low down and monthly payments, no resale responsibility, and tax savings since you pay sales tax on the lease portion rather than the purchase price of the car.

It might also be worthwhile if the after tax borrowing cost of a home equity loan is less than the lease financing rate.

Types of Leases

There are two major types of leases: open and closed ended. In the former type, if the car is worth more than the set price upon expiration of the lease, you are responsible for the underage or coverage. In the more advantages later type, the responsibility of the value of the car is shifted to the leasing company. Other tips on care leasing include:

  • Inform the lessor how you want the auto equipped; do not accept unwanted options.
  • Obtain all delivery, and other, charges in advance, including down payment, security.
  • Deposit, registration fees, interest rates, residual value, rebates and all taxes (sales, personal property, use and gross receipt).
  • Know the capitalized cost (selling price) of the car
  • Know annual mileage limits, usually 15-18,000 miles, and all excess use charges.
  • Avoid maintenance and service contracts, and arrange for your own insurance.
  • Understand that terms, such as money factor, or interest factor, may be used instead of the term interest rate. In this case, simply multiple the rate by 24 for an estimate of the true interest rate involved.
  • Read the contract and understand all penalties, especially for premature or late termination, purchase or return terms, and consequences of theft.
  • Check the lease terms through an independent company, such as First National Lease Systems.

Rough Rules of Thumb

A rough rule of thumb to determine whether to buy or lease involves multiplying all the payments required by the number of months you will have to pay, and add the down payment to yield the total amount of the purchase. Then, multiply the lease payment by the number of months, and add required up-front costs, as well as residual value (end of lease buyout cost), to determine the total amount to lease. Compare the two figures to determine the most economical deal.

Typically, a cash deal is less expensive in the long run, providing a higher after tax rate of return is not available, as an alternate investment, for the funds.

***

Jaguar Touring sedan XJ-V8-LWB***

Dis-Advantages

But, there are dis-advantages to auto leasing, too!

Perhaps the worse reason to lease a car is to drive one that you could not otherwise afford to drive. This is because most low monthly payments are only composed of two portions: interest on the note and the prorated cost of auto depreciation. No money is applied to ownership of the vehicle.

Assessment

Finally, beware Spring-Fever and do not likely buy “gap” insurance to cover the difference between what your auto insurer would pay if your car was totaled, and what you would owe the leasing firm. It’s usually too expensive and the risk is minimal.

How to Protect Your Vehicle During Long-Term Storage

Hibernation and Your Luxury Car

An ME-P Special Winter Report

***

DEM at Univ of Pittsburgh

***

I was speaking at a seminar in Pittsburgh PA recently, and I realized how cold it gets there. Moreover, I just learned of an impeding Christmas Eve storm this year.

Hence this ME-P.

***

Many car drivers use their vehicle every day, but from time to time – and during the winter – it’s necessary to consider long-term storage. Some physicians however, don’t use their car over the winter months, or need to leave the country for a while on vacation, and this means that it’s time to store away that luxury automobile.

The Storage Steps:

So, if you need to put your car into long-term storage, use the following tips to make sure that your vehicle remains in excellent working order.

Find a good place to store the car

You probably won’t want to leave your car exposed to the elements if you’re not going to use it. Find a sheltered place to keep the car like a garage, shed, or outhouse that can protect the vehicle from the rain. Search local ads for reasonably priced accommodation if you don’t have your own garage. If there’s nothing available, invest in a high-quality weatherproof car cover which will at least protect your car from the weather.

Thoroughly clean the car

Dirt and debris on your car may cause damage, so give the car a thorough clean before storing it. Remove bird droppings or tree sap, which can both damage paint work, and get rid of mud or oil from the wheels and fenders. Apply a good quality wax or sealant to the exterior, as this will protect the paint from any dirt or dust that accumulates in storage.

Fill up your gas tank

Some doctors and other drivers make the mistake of emptying the gas tank when they put their cars into storage.

Follow your car dealer recommendations but use premium if you can. Topping off your gas tank stops moisture from accumulating inside the tank, and will also make sure the seals don’t dry out. Gas is cheap currently, so do not forget this step.

And, consider adding a fuel stabilizer, which may protect the engine from rust and ensure the fuel doesn’t deteriorate [debatable issue].

Charge the battery

Even though you aren’t going to drive the car for a while, it’s a good idea to make sure the battery charge doesn’t run out. If you can’t get somebody to come and visit the car, charge and disconnect the battery completely.

Otherwise, you can buy a battery tender [not trickle charger] that plugs into the electricity supply and continuously gently charges the battery. I have one for my vintage 2000 Jaguar XJ-V8-XL and they are great.

Inflate your tires

It’s always a good idea to inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. While the car is stationary, the weight of the vehicle pressing on the tires can cause damage, particularly in cold temperatures.

Another solution to consider is removing all four wheels and jacking the car up on all four corners. This is hard work, but it’s worth it for cars that will be stored for a month or more.

Protect the car from pests

Cars give rats and mice lots of places to hide and keep warm and these creatures can cause damage if they gnaw at wires. Plug obvious places (like the exhaust pipe) where rodents could get in, and consider laying traps or poison. Make sure you close all the car windows tightly and remove any food or trash from the car that may attract pests.

Don’t cancel your insurance

Your car is a valuable asset. Even though it’s not on the road, it could still suffer damage in storage. If you cancel your insurance, you may have to pay more when you decide to start driving it again. Talk to your insurance company about the options available to you.

More:

Assessment

It’s important to prepare your car properly for long-term storage. Your vehicle is probably worth a lot of money, so protect your investment and make sure your car is just the way you left it when you come back.

Obtaining and Making the Most of an Upgrade

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

[By Nalley Lexus Roswell, GA]

Dr David E Marcinko MBADoctors and other medical professionals typically rent automobiles; and frequently.

When you rent a car, the rental company will normally have a range of different types available, each priced according to the size and class of car.

While you will almost certainly have booked one class of car, very often the rental company will be in a position to offer you a free upgrade to a larger or more luxurious model.

The Upgrade

So how do you increase your chances of getting a free vehicle upgrade? Here are some ideas:.

  1. Use the same office

If you regularly hire cars, try to make a point of using the same company. If you use a local office (or the same rental office) then the staff members will probably start to recognize you, which might increase your chances of being offered a free upgrade. The car rental business is very competitive, especially in certain locations, so these businesses will be looking to find ways to please you.

  1. Get to the office early

While car rental offices are turning over a number of cars throughout the day, most cars will be returned between the hours of 9 a.m. and midday. If you get to the office early, the staff members may actually have a shortage of cars in the class that you have ordered, which could force them to offer you something larger or more luxurious.

  1. Join loyalty schemes

Some car rental companies have loyalty schemes or member’s clubs, where you may be offered special deals. In exchange for a few personal details, you will receive regular mailings about discounts and offers, some of which will include a free upgrade if you fulfill certain conditions. Even if there is no offer in place, make sure the staff members know that you’re a member of the scheme, as it may just sway their opinion.

  1. Use the personal touch

The way in which you interact with the office personnel may influence the likelihood that you will get a free upgrade. Bear in mind that staff members deal with hundreds of people every day. Somebody that smiles and is patient and friendly is much more likely to be welcome in the office and may be rewarded. Chat with the staff member dealing with you and, if necessary, show your interest in one of the larger, more luxurious cars. It might just sway them in your favor!

  1. Choose a popular model

When you make a reservation, make a point of talking to the office directly so that you can use the staff member’s local knowledge. Ask the office which class or type of car is the most popular and then book that one. That way, there is a higher likelihood that the office will be out of stock when you arrive.

***

001

[Classic Jaguar XJ-V8 Luxury Touring Sedan]

Assessment

In all cases, be aware that many offices will try and push an upgrade charge on you, which may range from $5 upwards per day. Don’t be bullied into accepting this charge!

Why You Should Schedule an Autumn Road Trip Tune-Up

Join Our Mailing List

Getting Ready for Fall Leisure Travels

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

[By Nalley Lexus – Roswell, GA]

DEM in his 1990 MiataMany doctor and other drivers believe that there is no need to send their car to a technician unless there is a noticeable problem. I used to be of this mind set. But, I soon learned this philosophy often ends up costing money and peace of mind in the long run.

So, as a surgeon with NO mechanical automobile aptitude, I believe in preparing a vehicle for the road ahead – so that you can concentrate on what’s really important – having a great autumn ride to see the mountains and leaves this season.

Why?

Here are the main reasons why you should schedule a tune-up prior to a summer road trip.

Sometimes, you have to spend money to save money–and while a tune-up isn’t free, it will diagnose minor problems before they become major problems. This could range from parts approaching the end of their expected life to car part damage. Regardless of the issue, if there is something wrong with your car, then it is going to need to be fixed in due course.

For instance, even if only one part is faulty, then it can eventually cause problems with other parts of your car if you do not resolve the issue immediately.

You cannot put a price on peace of mind, and if you are about to set out with your family on an exciting road trip, the last thing you want to do is worry about whether or not your car is going to endure the long distance. A tune-up, ahead of your getaway, will allow you to drive long distances, devoid of stress.

***

***

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm F/4 VR

***

Overall, the most important consideration in scheduling a road trip tune-up is your safety, the safety of your passengers and the safety of other drivers.

If you are driving for an extended period of time, it is important to ensure that your car is not only reliable, but that it is also safe to drive.

If you need to use your anti-lock braking system while on the road, for example, you need to be certain that it is working efficiently. Similarly, you want to be sure that your comfort features, such as air conditioning, are running properly as well.

Acknowledging Ada Lovelace Day [“Mother” of HIT?]

Join Our Mailing List

Today is Ada Lovelace Day 2014

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

demAda Lovelace Day was created to celebrate one of the first female computer programmers. As the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, Augusta Ada Byron, was brought up by her mother, Annabella, after he passed.

Her mother feared that she would inherit her father’s poetic temperament, and gave Ada a strict upbringing of logic, science and mathematics. Ada became fascinated with mechanisms and designed steam flying machines, poring over the scientific magazines of the time and embracing the British Industrial revolution.

The Analytical Engine

In 1833, Ada Lovelace was introduced to Charles Babbage whom she helped to develop a device called The Analytical Engine; an early predecessor of the modern computer. Lovelace and Babbage worked together closely for many years in order to refine the Engine. Ada found relative fame in 1842 when she expanded on an article by an Italian mathematician, in which she elaborated on the use of machines through the manipulation of symbols. Although Babbage had sketched out programs before, Lovelace’s were the most elaborate and complete, and the first to be published; so she is often referred to as “the first computer programmer”.

***

ADA LOVELACE

***

Death

Ada Lovelace died of cancer at the age of 36 a few short years after the publication of “Sketch of the Analytical Engine, with Notes from the Translator”. The Analytical Engine remained a vision for many but until Ada’s notes inspired Alan Turing to work on the first modern computers in the 1940’s.

Assessment

Her passion and vision for technology have made her a powerful symbol for women in the modern world of technology. But, was she the “mother” of Health Information Technology? You decide.

Today is “Name Your Car” Day

Anthropomorphizing Your Vehicle?

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

DEM blue tieUnfortunately, many people do not think about naming their cars. Name Your Car Day has been set aside especially for those of you who may have forgotten this little ritual.

It’s very common for people to name their boats so why is it that some people forget to name their car?

Let’s face it, our cars do a lot for us and many of us would be lost without them so why not take the time to think of a good name for your daily companion. If it weren’t for him/her how would you get to work? How would you go shopping? How would you take the kids to soccer practice? How would you get to the office, clinic or hospital?

Back in the Day

When I was a kid, we were poor and had seven vehicles, or “beaters”, parked on the public inner-city side streets.  Our hope was that on any given day – two would start-up and be drivable.  There were six of us in the family, although only two had valid driver licenses for our little car pool

Obviously, we never named any of em’.

Today, my wife, daughter and I have four very serviceable cars; three are daily drivers, and one, our Jaguar 2000  sedan [XJ-V8-L], is special – used occasionally or only on the weekends. All have names; a tradition started by my daughter when she was a kid. There is Snow Rachel,  Mr. Ed, Blackie and Ellie [short for elegant]

At the Ready

Yes, we are blessed today. All four automobiles are always there for us whenever we need them; unlike when I was a kid. Who could ask for more dependability than that?

So, on “Name Your Car Day”, take the time to choose a name that your car, and you, will be proud to call your own.

Five [5] Essential Tips for Doctors to Remember During an Auto Accident

Join Our Mailing List

In My Dual Experience

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

[By Nalley Lexus, Roswell GA]

Dr. Marcinko 1972 VetteYou can’t be sure how you will react in a car accident until you have experienced one.

I should know – I’ve been in accidents, am a doctor who covered the ER, and was a licensed property-casualty insurance agent for a decade.

The Event

Even if you aren’t physically hurt, the trauma during any accident can cause shock or fuzzy thinking at a time when you need to keep your wits. If you ever find yourself in an accident, insurance protection is vital, but it’s also important to remember these five tips:

The Five Tips:

  1. Assess for accident injuries

If possible, assess yourself and any passengers for injuries and immediately call for medical assistance if necessary. Should anyone be seriously injured or unable to move, try not to move them unless there is threat of a fire or they are on the road where they could be hit by another car.  Act as a physician, if needed. OR, recall good Samaritan laws in your state?

  1. Safety first

For minor accidents, move both vehicles off the road for protection against moving traffic. If the damage to your vehicle is severe, keep it where it is until the police arrive. Turn on your emergency flashers to alert oncoming traffic.

  1. Stay calm and ask questions

This should not be difficult for physicians. No matter who is at fault during an accident, this is not the time to freak out or become overly emotional. Remain calm and with a clear head assess what happened and be ready to ask questions. Know exactly where your insurance information is located and other identification you’ll need to meet your legal requirements. Write down the names and contact information for all witnesses. If you are not at fault, and the accident wasn’t serious enough to involve a police report, do not let the other driver talk you into letting them mail you a check for the damage to your car. If they claim they don’t have insurance, ask questions about their car registration, name, and contact information, and give them your insurance information. Tell them you will be contacting your own agent to report the accident. If possible, take a photo of both cars showing the damage and license plates.

  1. Admit no fault

Answer no questions about fault with anyone except a police officer or your insurance company. Give no statements to the other driver’s insurance company or your words might be twisted and used against you. You also shouldn’t sign any legal documents from the other insurance company, especially if you feel they are pressuring you for an early settlement that you feel isn’t sufficient to cover your damage.

  1. Immediately report the accident to your insurance company

This is the moment when you’ll finally understand why you pay monthly premiums for insurance protection. Carry your agent’s name and phone number in our car and make the call as soon as possible. The sooner you contact them, the sooner they can help you with your claim. Keep a folder in your car with all your insurance contact information and this tip list. This way you’ll have all the information you need to help you think more clearly if you’re stressed during an accident.

What is a ‘Healthy’ Automobile Battery?

Ask a Battery Technician

By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™

By Nalley Lexus, Roswell, GA

Dr. Marcinko 1972 Vette

You know that sinking feeling when you turn your key in the ignition, and instead of the roar of the engine, all you hear is a sad, defeated gurgle?

That’s a dead car battery, and it’s enough to ruin anyone’s day.

I should know. I own a vintage 2000 XJL-V8 luxury Jaguar vintage touring sedan; electrical gremlins are the norm. So, routine battery maintenance and regular battery checks will significantly lower your risk for the battery blues.

How it works

As you probably already know, the car battery is the essential component that starts your vehicle’s engine. Within the battery, a chemical reaction creates an electrical charge, which subsequently starts the car’s motor. Battery power is also required for your car’s electrical components like cabin and headlights.

Healthy Battery

Your battery is in the clear if it is consistently working, and clean. Your battery and its cables should be cleaned on a monthly basis with a small, stiff brush like a toothbrush to clear out dirt and debris from the road. Never use any sort of cleanser when cleaning. Healthy batteries should also be clear of corrosion. Brush away the corrosion from battery terminals by dipping a toothbrush into flat dark soda, or a mixture of water and baking soda, before scrubbing. Apply petroleum jelly on the surface after cleaning to prevent future build-up.

Unhealthy Battery

If your battery is displaying any of these symptoms, it’s time for a check-up. So, I asked my dealer and received these tips:

  • Low water in the battery cell could be affecting battery performance. Check the indicator on the side of the battery for the water level. If it needs filling, stop by our service department for a special tool to fill it up.
  • Age is a huge factor in battery health. Batteries are designed to last about five years, but this lifespan could shorten based on use and maintenance habits. If your battery is five or older, consider getting it checked out.
  • Cracks in the battery’s plastic casing or other wear on the battery connections could mean damage and are worth a second look.
  • Loose tie straps need adjusting. Make sure your battery is tightly secured, because engine vibration could knock the battery around and cause damage.

Assessment

Of course, the biggest sign of an unhealthy battery is a dead one, but it’s much better to routinely maintain your battery than to be left in a lurch without power. Get peace of mind with a power-up at your service department; or DIY.

What Vehicle Parts Are At Risk in the Summer Heat?

Still susceptible to heat and summer sun

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

dem21America’s roads are always busy, but the summer months are particularly hectic; especially here in Atlanta, GA.

As millions of Americans head off for their annual summer vacation, you can expect long traffic jams and frustrated drivers.

Modern luxury cars – that many physicians love – may be mechanically advanced, but they are still susceptible to heat, and the summer sun can be particularly hazardous for certain parts of your car.

So, please allow me to equip you with some information pertinent to your warm weather journeys. Trust me – I’m a doctor!

Hoses and Belts

Though it may seem rather obvious, it is very important to keep the engine cool when driving in the summer heat. Hoses help pump coolant to and from the engine while belts enable the fan to run effectively and continually cool your car’s engine.

In extreme heat, however, hoses can crack and belts can snap. You can check the hoses and belts yourself by looking for visual signs of wear or damage. If you are unsure, schedule an appointment with our service department before you set out on a summer road trip.

Dave's Jaguar Sedan

Cooling system

Modern cars have very effective cooling systems, which can counter relatively high extremes of temperature, but they have their limits. Aside from problems with hoses and belts, low levels of coolant, a leak in the radiator or a missing radiator cap can spell disaster if you are driving in hot weather.

Tires

Your car’s tires are vulnerable throughout the year, however, under-inflated, over-inflated or worn tires can be particularly dangerous during the summer. Tire pressure changes as the temperature increases. If the tire is under-inflated, it can bulge outward and put pressure on the sidewalls of the tire. If this continues, the tire can eventually burst. If the tire is overinflated, you are also at greater risk of hydroplaning in the event of a rain shower.

Oil filter

The car you drive relies heavily on oil, as this substance allows car parts to run efficiently. Heavy driving during the summer puts additional pressure on the oil, and on the oil filters in your car. Aim to change your oil [natural or synthetic] filters as often as the owner’s manual recommends, and certainly get them checked before you head off on a summer expedition.

Whether you are staying local this summer or driving hundreds of miles, I encourage your attention to the above to protect your car from the rigor of summer heat.
