  • Technology: Fears of an A.I. bubble continue to climb after MIT published a report that 95% of companies using generative A.I. programs have nothing to show for it, despite pouring billions of dollars into this space.
  • Stocks: Another day of technology stocks selling off pulled the S&P 500 and NASDAQ lower yesterday, with investors rotating out of some of the hottest names and sectors in the market.
  • FOMC Drama: President Trump demanded the resignation of Fed Governor Lisa Cook for allegations of mortgage fraud. Meanwhile, the minutes from the July FOMC meeting revealed a growing divide between central bankers.

BREAKING NEWS

Stanley Fischer, one of the most influential economists of recent decades, has died. He was 81. His death was confirmed by the WSJ and Bank of Israel, where he served as governor from 2005 to 2013.

Fischer served as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2017. He left his biggest mark in prior decades, as professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, second in command at the International Monetary Fund, and at the Bank of Israel. In those roles, Fischer helped shape how an entire generation of central bankers and economic policymakers do their jobs.

Fischer was born in 1943 in Northern Rhodesia (now the independent country of Zambia) and first came to the U.S. in 1966 to get a Ph.D. at MIT.

After several years at the University of Chicago, he joined the faculty of MIT.

THEORY: Linguistics and Cognitive Sciences

Avram Noam Chomsky is an American professor known for his traditional work in linguistics and political activism. Sometimes called “the father of modern linguistics”, Chomsky is also one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He is a laureate professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona and an professor emeritus at MIT.

And so, modern linguists today approach their work with scientific rigor and perspective [STEM], although they use methods that were once thought to be solely an academic discipline of the humanities.

Contrary to this humanitarian belief, according to Professor Mackenzie Hope Marcinko PhD of the University of Delaware, linguistics is now multidisciplinary. It overlaps each of the human sciences including psychology, neurology, anthropology, and sociology. Linguists conduct formal studies of sound structure, grammar and meaning, but also investigate the history of language families, and research language acquisition.

PODIATRY PREP: Pass All Your Board Certification Examinations in 2024

Celebrating 30 Years of Your Success!

***

Engineers at MIT want to optimize your jog. Some of the brightest minds in math and science have created a predictive model that can tell you what kind of shoe you would run best in. The model assesses a person’s height, weight, and leg length to simulate their gait in sneakers of different materials and mid-soles. It then projects the optimal shoe based on which one produces the most efficient running form (i.e., which uses as little energy as possible per stride).

And so, as 3D printing and related tech continue to drive sneaker innovation, the researchers say their model will be beneficial to designers who want to create new kinds of highly functional kicks (Adidas funded some of the research).

Why? Marketing and product sales, of course. But, some experts suggest improved shoes might increase your running away speed by 8-10% while reducing injuries.

35 INNOVATORS Under 35 Years of Age

M.I.T TECHNOLOGY IN REVIEW

The 35 Innovators Under 35 is a yearly opportunity to take a look at not just where technology is now, but where it’s going and who’s taking it there. More than 500 people are nominated every year, and from this group MIT editors pick the most promising 100 to move on to the semifinalist round.

Their work is then evaluated by a panel of judges who have expertise in such areas as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, software, energy, and materials. With the insight gained from these rankings, the MIT editors pick the final list of 35.

The 10 Worst Technologies of the 21st Century?

 MIT Technology Review

****

 MIT Technology Review

The latest issue, MIT Technology Review revealed 10 breakthrough technologies, chosen by Bill Gates, that he thinks will change the world for the better. We thought it only fair (and fun) to come up with a corresponding list of 10 “bad” technologies.

A hard choice: What makes them bad? Well, it could be because they fail to achieve good aims, or succeed in wicked ones. They could be harmful, flawed, or ahead of their time.

Sad: The Segway turned out to be an expensive scooter that makes you look silly. Google Glass, on the other hand, makes the list as a decent technology that just lacked decent enough uses when it launched.

Bad: Electronic voting made the cut for making elections more vulnerable. The CRISPR babies born in November 2018 are on there too, because indiscriminate uses of the technology should worry us. Data trafficking, where our data is shared and used without our control, is undermining freedom and democracy—it had to be one there.

Mad: Of course, some inventions have no redeeming features whatsoever. May we present: selfie sticks.

A simple tweak could unlock the Web for millions of people

International Corporation for Assigned Names

By MIT Technology Review

***
The letters to the right of the dot in a URL look harmless, but for many users they’re a barrier. In 2011, the International Corporation for Assigned Names decided to grow the number of top-level domains from 12 to 1,200, including some that use non-Latin characters.
 ***
But that revealed a problem: many applications simply don’t recognize those new characters. Our own Mike Orcutt explains how a simple tweak could change that and help millions of people use the Internet more effectively.

Why America Spends More on Healthcare

A McKinsey Global Institute Review

By Nancy Chockley; PhD
President & CEO
NIHCM FoundationRed Cross

Path breaking work by the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) shows that, relative to other peer countries from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the U.S. spends nearly $650 billion more on health care than would be expected after adjusting for cross-country differences in wealth.  Fully two-thirds of this added spending occurs in the outpatient sector.

Out-Patient Services

The highly profitable nature of many outpatient services coupled with the incentives of a fee-for-service payment system are contributing to greater intensity of outpatient care and helping to fuel this spending.  In this essay, “Why America Spends More on Health Care,” Eric Jensen and Lenny Mendonca describe MGI’s work to examine all sectors of the American health care system and identify factors responsible for the higher-than-expected spending.
