  • The short trading session didn’t stop the S&P 500 from hitting another new record today, and the S&P 500 and the Dow each wrapped up their best month of 2024 on a high note.
  • Meanwhile, November was the worst month for gold in over a year. Safe-haven investors sold the commodity while the US dollar soared following the election.
  • 10-year Treasury yields dropped to their lowest level in a month today as bond buyers bought in bulk.
  • Finally, bitcoin had one heck of a month. The crypto rose yet again today, and has climbed nearly 40% in November—though it has yet to break above $100,000.

BIDEN: Bows Out of 2024 Presidential Race!

KAMALA HARRIS IN

BREAKING NEWS!

By Staff Reporters

WASHINGTON − President Joe Biden said he is ending his bid for reelection amid intense pressure from Democratic leaders sounding the alarm that his path to beat former President Donald Trump in November has vanished.

The president’s historic withdrawal throws the 2024 race − already roiled by a shocking attempt on Trump’s life − into uncertain territory, with Vice President Kamala Harris seen as the Democrat best placed to take Biden’s place atop the party’s ticket. Biden did not immediately endorse a successor but did so later.

Biden just made the announcement Sunday from his home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., where he’s self-isolated since testing positive for COVID-19 Thursday night.

STUDENTS: Student Loan Repayments Commencing?

By Staff Reporters

***

***

Student loan payments could restart soon. Tucked into the debt ceiling deal agreed to by President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is a measure that requires student loan borrowers to start paying their monthly bills again 60 days after June 30th.

A freeze on repayments has been in place since March 2020 due to COVID-19, and it’s been extended several times as the pandemic dragged on. This deadline for the resumption of payments is similar to the timeline previously laid out by President Joe Biden, but it prevents him from issuing another pause.

U.S. DEBT CEILING DISCUSSIONS: No So Fast!

Talks were “productive,” but no debt ceiling deal yet

As the US careens toward a June 1st deadline to avoid default, President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met last night and failed to reach an agreement to prevent economic chaos. Still, McCarthy called their discussion “productive” and “professional,” saying the tone was “better than any other time we’ve had discussions.”

Before the meeting, McCarthy acknowledged that a deal must be struck this week in order to get it through Congress prior to the deadline, but the two sides remain far apart on the Republican’s demands for spending cuts.

Should the Government Mandate 401(k) Annuities?

About the Guaranteed Retirement Accounts Proposal
By Robert Giese
bob.giese@chsfl.org

Recent hearings in the House and Senate have focused on the need for 401(k) and IRA accounts to provide better retirement income. Vice President Joe Biden referred to these discussions in the White House Task Force on the Middle Class. He suggested creating “Guaranteed Retirement Accounts [GRAs].”

The guaranteed retirement accounts may replace conventional 401(k)s and could eventually provide annuity income to individuals.

Response to GAO Report

In response to a White House request, the General Accounting Office (GAO) released a report on April 28, 2010 that discussed some of these retirement issues. The GAO noted that a couple age 62 has at least a 47% probability that one of the two spouses will live to age 90. While life expectancy is in the mid-to-late 70s when one is born, the age at maturity increases as we grow older. Therefore, the average retirement age couple in America has a reasonable prospect that the survivor will live to be age 90.

GAO reports that Social Security is the primary support for lower income retired Americans. For the median retired person, Social Security is expected to provide approximately 47% of retirement income. The balance will come from savings or investments, a qualified plan such as a 401(k) or IRA and retirement earnings from employment.

Better than Conservative Investments?

The GAO report notes that an annuity may provide more income than a conservative investment, such as a bond or CD.

Assessment

Republican lawmakers this week wrote a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and expressed concern about the guaranteed retirement accounts. They noted that a number of the witnesses before the various committees would “dismantle the present private-sector 401(k) system” and replace it with the GRA.
Their letter expressed concern and opposition to any effort to “nationalize” the 401(k) system. The Republican lawmakers continued by noting that over 90% of households have a favorable opinion of 401(k) or IRA accounts.

Conclusion

And so, your thoughts and comments on this ME-P are appreciated. Is this new vehicle really better than a bond or CD? Is it the correct vehicle for a long-term retirement strategy? Is it even appropriate for physicians and medical professionals?

Prominent Politician Views on Health Information Technology

A Guest Thought-Leader Op-Ed Piece

Ann Miller; RN, MHA [Executive-Director]

By Alberto Borges; MD

In this review, ME-P thought-leader and colleague, Al Borges MD dissects and presents the political views of HIT by several prominent politicians.  WHY?

He believes that only a handful of politicians are questioning whether the cost of HIT will actually improve healthcare as promised, which can end up in wasted taxpayer money, and worse, become a slow-moving HIT blunder which puts patient lives at risk. Even President Obama’s staff quietly admits that these statements are unproven.

Assessment

For example, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and the current health-policy adviser at the Office of Management and Budget and a member of Federal Council on Comparative Effectiveness Research stated last year that:

“Vague promises of savings from cutting waste, enhancing prevention and wellness, installing electronic medical records and improving quality are merely ‘lipstick’ cost control, more for show and public relations than for true change.”
