NIH: Jeanne Marrazzo MD Succeeds Dr. Anthony Fauci as Infectious Disease Chief

Jeanne M. Marrazzo MD, a University of Alabama at Birmingham infectious-disease expert, will succeed Anthony S. Fauci this fall as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, federal officials announced yesterday.

The $6.3 billion research institute is among the largest of the 27 institutes and centers that constitute the National Institutes of Health, America’s flagship biomedical agency. NIAID is also particularly prominent given its involvement in the response to the coronavirus pandemic and other diseases; it has also received attention because of Dr. Tony Fauci’s own high profile and Republicans’ ongoing efforts to investigate the institute’s workings.

Marrazzo, an infectious-disease physician and epidemiologist who has been a principal investigator on NIH grants since 1997, has focused her research on the human microbiome and the prevention of HIV and infections in the female reproductive tract. She emerged as a frequent commentator during the pandemic, appearing on national television and urging Americans to get vaccinated and take other steps to protect themselves from the virus.

An openly gay physician, Marrazzo has studied barriers to care for LGBTQ patients and advocated to address them.

DR. ANTHONY FAUCI: Retires after 50 Years of Service

I first met my esteemed colleague Tony Fauci MD more than 30 years ago as a young surgical resident in Atlanta. My esteem for him has grown immensely since then. After all, he is an American physician-scientist and immunologist serving as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Chief Medical Advisor to the President

And so, upon his retirement, Dr. Anthony Fauci urged Americans to get their reformulated Covid boosters in his final White House press briefing yesterday. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease official and the leader of the NIAID since 1984, announced recently that he’d be stepping down to “pursue the next chapter” of his career in December, 2022.

Dr. Fauci’s final plea comes as public health officials warn that a “viral jumbalaya” of respiratory infections threatens to push hospitals to the brink this coming winter.

Round-Up on MARKETS and MEDICINE: 2022

  • Stock Markets: The three major equity indexes begin 2022 near record highs after closing out their best 3-year performance since 1999. The top-performing S&P sectors: Energy, whose 48% annual gain was its best ever (thank you, soaring oil prices). Real estate was the second-best performing sector at 42%, while tech and financials both rose 33%. The biggest winner in the S&P was Devon Energy, which gained nearly 190%. Ford, Moderna, and nine others in the index more than doubled their stock price. Microsoft rose 51%, and Apple’s 34% gain has it sitting close to a $3 trillion market capitalization.
  • Covid Medicine: Omicron has caused a rapid explosion of Covid cases in the US—the 7-day rolling average of nearly 400,000 new cases on Saturday was more than double the number from one week before. With hospitalizations also ticking higher, officials are warning that health systems will be overloaded before the Omicron wave is expected to peak in mid-January. And, Dr. Anthony Fauci said yesterday that health officials are looking at adding a negative test requirement after five days of quarantine. Under existing guidance, you can emerge from isolation without showing a negative test.
