What Is a Marketing Brand

A brand is a name, term, design, symbol or any other feature that distinguishes one seller’s goods or service from those of other sellers. Brands are used in business, marketing and advertising for recognition and, importantly, to create and store value as brand equity for the object identified, to the benefit of the brand’s clients, patients, customers, its owners and shareholders. Brand management, also known as Marketing, is responsible for the overall management of a brand. This includes everything from product or service development and marketing to advertising and public relations. All of these aspects work together to create a particular image or reputation for a brand. The goal of brand management is to create a robust and positive reputation for a brand that will result in increased sales and market share.This process helps companies create a unique identity for their products or services in the marketplace. A successful brand management strategy can build client, patient and customer loyalty .

Branding is essential for financial advisors, doctors and businesses because it involves creating a unique identity for a company’s products, offerings and services. It can also help build customer, client and patient loyalty and emotionally connect with the practitioner. Branding can be complex, but it is essential to understand the basics before starting a brand strategy.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT: Definition with Big Pharma Example

Crisis Management is the precautions and identification of threats to an organization and its stakeholders, and the methods used by the organization to deal with these threats.

For example, recall in 1982, that Tylenol™ commanded 35 percent of the over-the-counter analgesic market in America and it represented nearly 17 percent of Johnson & Johnson’s profits. But, when seven people died from consuming the tainted drug, a national panic ensued. Moreover, Americans started to question the safety of all over-the-counter medications.

Fortunately, J&J commenced the proto-typical good crisis response in the following way:

  • J&J acted quickly, with complete candidness about what happened and within hours of learning of the deaths, J&J installed toll-free numbers for consumers, sent alerts to healthcare providers nationwide, and stopped advertising the product. J&J recalled 31 million bottles of Tylenol™ capsules and offered replacement products free of charge. J&J did not wait for evidence to see whether the contamination might be more widespread.
  • J&J’s leadership was in the lead and seemed in full control throughout the crisis. The chairman was admired for his leadership to pull Tylenol™ capsules off the market and his forthrightness in dealing with the media. The Tylenol™ crisis led the news every night on every station for six weeks.
  • J&J placed consumers first. J&J spent more than $100 million for the recall and re-launch of Tylenol™. The stock had been trading near a 52-week high just before the tragedy, dropped for a time, but recovered to its highs only two months later.
  • J&J accepted responsibility. The disaster could have been described in many different ways: as an assault on the company, as a problem somewhere in the process of getting Tylenol™ from J&J factories to retail stores, or as the acts of a crazed criminal.
  • J&J sought to ensure that measures were taken to prevent a recurrence of the problem. J&J introduced tamper-proof packaging that would make it much more difficult for a similar incident to occur in the future.
  • J&J presented itself prepared to handle the short-term damage in the name of consumer safety. Within a year of the disaster, J&J’s share of the analgesic market, which had fallen to 7 percent from 37 percent following the poisoning, had climbed back to 30 percent.

This wildly successful response in now the stuff of graduate and business school case models for excellence in teaching!

The Decline Bias [Declinism]

You may have heard the complaint that the internet, blogs, vlogs and social media will be the downfall of information dissemination; but, Socrates reportedly said the same thing about the written word.

Declinism refers to a bias in favor of the past over and above “how things are going.” Similarly, you might know a member of an older generation who prefaces grievances with, “Well, back in my day” before following up with how things are supposedly getting worse.

The decline bias may result from something before — we just don’t like change. People like their worlds to make sense, they like things wrapped up in nice, neat little packages.

Our world is easier to engage in when things make sense to us. When things change, so must the way in which we think about them; and because we are cognitively lazy (Kahenman, 2011; Simon, 1957), we try our best to avoid changing our thought processes.

In March, the cyber criminal organization received $22 million in bitcoins, though UnitedHealth Group has not addressed whether the company paid the ransom. On April 15th, ransomware group RansomHub posted files on its dark web leak site comprising of personal and protected health information on patients whose data was taken in the hack. The files also include contracts and agreements between Change and its clients, marking the first time hackers have posted data from the attack.

Stocks started the day strong yesterday but ended up slumping before the market closed as investors pulled back on tech stocks, including Nvidia. United Airlines took off after releasing a strong forecast for the year despite saying it took a $200 million hit because of Boeing’s troubles.

Here’s where the major benchmarks ended:

  • The S&P 500 index lost 29.20 points (0.6%) to 5,022.21; the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 45.66 points (0.1%) to 37,753.31; the NASDAQ Composite dropped 181.88 points (1.2%) to 15,683.37.
  • The 10-year Treasury note yield (TNX) decreased more than 7 basis points to 4.585%.
  • The CBOE Volatility Index® (VIX) fell 0.20 to 18.20.

ASML’s slump helped send the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) down 3.3% to its lowest level since late February. Transportation shares were also under pressure after trucking company J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) dropped 8.1% in the wake of disappointing quarterly numbers. Energy shares slipped as WTI Crude Oil (/CL) futures fell 3% to a three-week low.

ELON MUSK’S TWITTER FOR DOCTORS: Same, Change, Grow or Die?

NEWS FLASH!

Elon Musk, the richest person on the planet, is the CEO of the world’s most valuable automaker TESLA, heads up a $125 billion aerospace giant, and as of yesterday, is the owner of a social media company Twitter.

According to multiple reports, Musk closed the $44 billion deal last night, less than 24 hours before today’s 5pm ET deadline. He began his reign as “Chief Twit” by firing at least four executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal (who was reportedly escorted out of Twitter’s SF headquarters). Later today, Musk is expected to address anxious employees, who might be worried they’ll face the same fate as their former leader. Historically:

  • Musk acquired a large stake in Twitter and later signed a deal to buy all of it.
  • Then he tried to back out, citing bot issues, but Twitter sued him to enforce the agreement.
  • Musk blinked weeks ahead of a trial, and said he would buy Twitter.

Now What?

So begins Musk’s attempt to, in his words, “help humanity” by trying to turn Twitter into a “common digital town square.”

We know that Musk has ultra-ambitious goals for the company: 5x Twitter’s revenue by 2028, supercharge the subscriptions business, and turn Twitter into a super app called “X.” But murkier is the path he intends to take to get there, and he’s already sending mixed signals about his intentions. And what about doctors and the healthcare industrial complex? Will it remain the same or change?

Back in early 2014 the first list of the “Top 100 Twitter Accounts For Healthcare Professionals To Follow” was born. Then, the biggest social media-related question to hurdle wasn’t, “Who should I be following on social media?” but rather, “Should I even be on social media at all?”

Many years later, it’s safe to say that social media has firmly established itself in the healthcare industry. By finding healthcare Twitter accounts that are related to your specialty, you can have access to the best information and always remain within the loop.
