On the Tooth Flossing Controversy?

 Explained -OR- Not?

[By Dr. David E. Marcinko MBA]

An investigation by The Associated Press has many dentists grinding their teeth.

The report found there was no credible evidence to back up the claimed benefits of flossing, a habit trumpeted by oral hygienists and dentists everywhere.

What is the Eisenhower Matrix?

What is the Eisenhower Matrix?

[By staff reporters]

The Eisenhower Matrix is a business management and strategic planning productivity tool that helps to sort tasks and spread them reasonably over time.

The sort out is based on the principals of urgency and importance. When assigned to each task, those two factors place the task to the relevant quadrant of the matrix.

After this routine is done, it’s enough to take a look at the matrix to visually estimate what you should start with.

What is “Sentimental” Stock Market Analysis?

What it is – How it works

[By Staff reporters]

There is no shortage of analysis for anyone interested in investing. A search for the term “stock market analysis” turned up 16 million hits on Google and well over 200,000 hits each on Bing, and Yahoo.

The majority of stock market analysis can be lumped into three broad groups: fundamental, technical, and sentimental. Here’s a close look at SA.

Sentimental Analysis

Sentimental analysis attempts to measure the market in terms of the attitudes of investors. Sentimental analysis starts from the assumption that the majority of investors are wrong. In other words, that the stock market has the potential to disappoint when “masses of investors” believe prices are headed in a particular direction.

Sentiment analysts are often referred to as contrarians who look to invest against the majority view of the market.

For example, if the majority of professional market watchers expect a stock price to trend higher, sentiment analysts may look for prices to disappoint the majority and trend lower.

Which approach is best?

There is no clear answer to that question.

But it’s important to remember three things:

Past performance does not guarantee future results, actual results will vary, and the best approach may be to create a portfolio based on your time horizon, risk tolerance, and goals.

Keep in mind that the return and principal value of stock prices will fluctuate as market conditions change. And shares, when sold, may be worth more or less than their original cost.

What is the “SIZE EFFECT” in Finance?

Bigger is NOT Always Better

[By staff reporters]

The size effect in finance literature refers to the observation that smaller firms have higher returns than larger firms, on average over long horizons. It also describes the contribution that firm size has in explaining stock returns.

How Should We Define “Patient Engagement?”

What Are We Measuring, and Does It Matter for Patient Care?

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA]

OK; I admit it. I edited three major dictionaries on health insurance and managed care, health economics and finance, and health information technology and security. Each tome was comprised of 10,000 peer-reviewed terms, definitions, initialisms, acronyms and syllogisms, etc; for a total of 30,000 peer-reviewed entries. They have been very successfully received to date; throughout the entire medico-legal-business ecosystem.

***

Product DetailsProduct DetailsProduct Details

***

So, imagine my surprise when I just leaned that the concept of “patient engagement’ within the context of shared decision making [SDM] – which has been bantered about on this forum and the medical, nursing, legal, public health policy and  management community without real precision for decades – is in definitional limbo. And, I quote:

“In a rigorous systematic review, Dukhanin and colleagues categorize metrics and evaluative tools of the engagement of patient, public, consumer and community in decision-making in healthcare institutions and systems. The review itself is ably done and the categorizations lead to a useful understanding of the necessary elements of engagement, and a suite of measures relevant to implementing engagement in systems. Nevertheless, the question remains whether the engagement of patient representatives in institutional or systemic deliberations will lead to improved clinical outcomes or increased engagement of individual patients themselves in care. Attention to the conceptual foundations of patient engagement would help make this systematic review relevant to the clinical care of patients.”

Assessment

The publication is from the “International Journal of Health Policy and Management”, January 2019.

Now, I was asked to serve on their editorial review board about a year ago but demurred due to time constraints. Nevertheless, I am glad that the IJHPM is thriving and challenging conventional wisdom and the shibboleths we all seem to accept without proof.

And perhaps, SHOULD NOT.

How to Spot Fake News?

Maybe?

[By Staff Reporters]

Fake news websites (also referred to as hoax news websites) are Internet websites that deliberately publish fake news — hoaxes, propaganda and disinformation purporting to be real news —often using social media to drive web traffic and amplify their effect.

Unlike news satire, fake news websites deliberately seek to be perceived as legitimate and taken at face value, often for financial or political gain.

Crystal balls. Tarot cards. Extra Sensory Perception. Looking at tea leaves. Using your sixth sense. Fortune cookies. Reading Nostradamus. Precognitive dreaming. Palmistry.

There are many ways, it is said, that  you can tell the future, and precisely none of them were used to research this list of the biggest digital marketing trends for 2017.

Instead, we have taken a year’s worth of reading about marketing every day, looked at the developments that seem to be gaining traction, and extrapolated some predictions for 2017.

Here they are!

On PBMs [Pharmacy Benefits Management]

Pharmacy Benefits Management [PBM]

[By staff reporters]

DEFINITION:

In the United States, a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) is a third-party administrator (TPA) of prescription drug programs for commercial health plans, self-insured employer plans, Medicare Part D plans, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP), and state government employee plans. As of 2018 they have become industrial behemoths in the US health sector.

According to the American Pharmacists Association, “PBMs are primarily responsible for developing and maintaining the formulary, contracting with pharmacies, negotiating discounts and rebates with drug manufacturers, and processing and paying prescription drug claims.

For the most part, they work with self-insured companies and government programs striving to maintain or reduce the pharmacy expenditures of the plan while concurrently trying to improve health care outcomes”.

WHAT CAN A Certified Financial Planner® REALLY DO FOR YOU?

That a NON-CFP® Certificant … CAN-NOT?

[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP®]

http://www.CertifiedMedicalPlanner.org

OK – I was a Certified Financial Planner® before my academic team launched the Certified Medical Planner™ online and on-ground chartered education and board certification designation program a few years ago. I am now reformed and in remission.

MORE: Enter CPMs

Enter the Certified Medical PlannerChartered Designation

Today, we are gratified that Certified Medical Planner™ mark notoriety is growing organically in the healthcare, as well as financial services, industry.

In fact, even uber-blogger Mike Kitces MSFS, MTAX, CFP, CLU, ChFC, RHU, REBC, CASL has taken note of us in his musings on the Nerd’s Eye View website.

And, the reality is that there are a growing number of CFP educational programs at the post-CFP niche market level. But, none for healthcare industrial complex: for doctors … by doctors!

QUERY

Nevertheless, I was a bit flummoxed when a physician college recently asked me this simple question:

Q: What can a CFP® mark holder do for me that a non-CFP® certificant can not?

Assessment

Now, much like a good interrogating attorney, I think I already know the answer to this question. Nevertheless, it is important to determine and understand what our ME-P readers believe; and why they believe it!

What it is – How it works?

[By staff reporters]

The term “Triple Entry Accounting,” was first used by Ian Grigg, financial cryptographer, and described in his paper published in 2005, three years before the emergence of Bitcoin and its underlying Blockchain protocol.

HAPPY “NATIONAL TRIVIA DAY”

TODAY IS “NATIONAL TRIVIA DAY”

Courtesy: www.MedicalExecutivePost.com

[Just for Fun]

YEP – It is true – “National Trivia Day” is observed across the United States each year on January 4th. The word trivia is plural for the word trivium. In ancient times, the term “trivia” was appropriated to mean something very new.

What Is the “Crowding Out” Effect?

Crowding-Out

[By Staff Reporters]

” A situation when increased interest rates lead to a reduction in private investment spending such that it dampens the initial increase of total investment spending is called crowding out effect “

***

***

The Crowding Out effect is a Monetarist criticism of expansionary fiscal policy. As seen in the multiplier effect, government spending will shift Aggregate Demand (AD) further than expected when an expansionary fiscal policy is implemented.

Assessment

However, Monetarists believe that because of this expansionary fiscal policy, the government will need to borrow money by selling government bonds. This leads to a rise in interest rates. The increased borrowing ‘crowds out’ private investing.

The “January Effect”

What it is – How it works

[By Dr. David E. Marcinko MBA]

The January effect is a hypothesis that there is a seasonal anomaly in the financial market where securities’ prices increase in the month of January more than in any other month.

This calendar effect would create an opportunity for investors to buy stocks for lower prices before January and sell them after their value increases.
