Saluting the New Surgeon General Nominee
Please allow all of us associated with the Medical Executive-Post to congratulate neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta MD, who was appointment Surgeon General by President-elect Barack S. Obama, this day.
Who is He?
The physician is – of course – well known as CNN’s medical correspondent and assistant professor of neurosurgery here in Atlanta, at Grady Memorial Hospital. GMH is a tumultuous non-profit charitable entity that operates the regions’ only Level I trauma center. Gupta is an avid, and popular, teacher who does much pro-bono work. Mazel Tov [מזל טוב] Sanjay!
A Renaissance Man
A protean guy, Gupta contributes health news stories to CNN.com and CNNHealth.com. He co-hosts “Accent Health” for Turner Private Networks, provides medical segments for the syndicated version of ER on TNT, writes a column for TIME magazine, and anchors the global health program Vital Signs for CNN International. He is also featured in a weekly podcast on health issues called “Paging Dr. Gupta” [whew!].
Of Public Health
Now, we don’t know if – or how much – input into health reform Gupta will enjoy. But, then again does anyone in this mostly ceremonial position? And, if the position is so important – quick can you name the current Surgeon General without a Google/Chrome Search – and what notable thing has she/he accomplished?

On a personal note, CEK is still my all time favorite SG. Why so? Well, about five years ago I invited him to pen the Foreword to the second edition of my best-selling book, the Business of Medical Practice. Dr. Koop saw fit to formally reject me three times. In fact, he wrote me a letter that I still cherish … and, again I say to yea, NO! Now, you just gotta respect the guy.
Assessment
Anyway, why should the head of public health for the nation be a surgeon? Couldn’t they be an internist or primary care physician? Many kudos regardless – here’s to you Sanjay!

Why does the Surgeon “General” wear a Navy-looking uniform? Shouldn’t he be called the Surgeon “Admiral”, instead?

Dear Sanjay,
Sorry to hear confirmations that your SG nomination has been withdrawn; but I respect your decision. The critics just don’t realize that this honorary position is not about public health, or medical care, at all.
At the SG level, it’s about something more important; visibility, youth leadership and vitality. It’s about motivation, public relations, energy and marketing. We need to make wellness popular, exciting and innovative, again; especially for our youth. This is something your purported list of dinosaur replacements don’t seem to have; “fly”.
Just wait another two decades; and you’ll be da-man. Of course, by then, both you and I will be so very last-gen.

On Premature Congrats,
Regina Marcia Benjamin MD operates a nonprofit medical clinic in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama. She became the first black women woman on the AMA’s board of trustees when elected to the post in 1995. On July 13, 2009 President Barack Obama tapped her for the position of Surgeon General. His first choice for Surgeon General, Dr. Sanjay Gupta here in Atlanta, GA, declined the nomination. When confirmed, Benjamin will be the third African American and the third non-acting woman to hold the position. She is also a MacArthur Fellowship Winner
Note: The MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction. There are three criteria for selection of Fellows: exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.

Regina Benjamin has impressive qualifications to become our next Surgeon General. She’s a primary care physician in Alabama who has spent considerable time treating the poor.

Weight matters. It would be difficult going to a doctor who is of the mindset “do as I say; but not as I do.” Kind of like conferring with a bald hair transplant surgeon.

Dr. Vivek Murthy, who was surgeon general under former President Barack Obama, famously advised President Joe Biden on the coronavirus pandemic during the presidential campaign. And during that time, he also ran a very lucrative business as a COVID-19 consultant for the private sector, reveals the Washington Post.
Murthy, who has been nominated to take on the role as surgeon general again, made millions consulting for the likes of Carnival cruise lines, Airbnb, and others. He also made hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees, according to ethics documents he filed last month.
