I’ve been a big fan of Bill Gates and the Microsoft Corporation since it first went public. Maybe not so much for Steve Ballmer. And, of course, very saddened by the recent death of co-founder Paul Allen https://www.paulallen.com/

Definition:

Dyslexia, also known as reading disorder, is characterized by trouble with reading despite normal intelligence. Different people are affected to varying degrees. Problems may include difficulties in spelling words, reading quickly, writing words, “sounding out” words in the head, pronouncing words when reading aloud and understanding what one reads. Often these difficulties are first noticed at school. When someone who previously could read loses their ability, it is known as alexia. The difficulties are involuntary and people with this disorder have a normal desire to learn.

Therefore, the ”Made By Dyslexia” pledge is for companies, teachers, professors, educators and governments to pledge to value dyslexic thinking, and to begin taking positive steps towards supporting it.

What is a Linguistic Tautology?

The word tautology was used by the ancient Greeks to describe a statement that was asserted to be true merely by virtue of saying the same thing twice, a pejorative meaning that is still used for rhetorical tautologies. Between 1800 and 1940, the word gained new meaning in logic, and is currently used in mathematical logic to denote a certain type of propositional formula, without the pejorative connotations it originally possessed.

A logical tautology is very different from a rhetorical tautology. It s a statement that will evaluate as true regardless of the truth values of the components of the sentence. For example, in logic or is non exclusive, which means that if we say A or B , the statement A or B would be true if A is true, if B is true, or if both are true. The only way A or B can be false is if both A and B are false. From this we can construct an example of a logical tautology. We can say A or not A , and it will be always be true regardless of whether A is true or not. This is the case because whenever A is false, not A is true, so at least one of the two will always be true. A real world example of a logical tautology would be the car is moving or it is not moving or the door is locked or it is not locked or the girl is pregnant or she is not pregnant.

GOOGLE Plus to Close

After exposing half a million users’ private data

Google kept quiet for months about a security flaw that exposed private information of up to half a million users of its Google+ social network.

The cover up: According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Google discovered a bug in Google+ code in March and fixed it, but decided not to reveal its existence. An internal Google memo showed that executives were worried about the damage the news would do to Google’s reputation at a time when Facebook was under fire for mishandling customer data in the Cambridge Analytica affair.

The bug: It had been around since 2015 and was found in code that lets third-party app developers access publicly available Google+ profile data about a user and their connections, with the user’s permission. The glitch meant developers could access private details about people’s friends too, for example their email addresses, birthdays, and relationship statuses. Google has now shut off consumer access to Google+.

The consequences: The cover up will put even more pressure on policymakers to scrutinize the power of big tech companies and their grip over our data. It will also fuel attempts by privacy activists to get tougher laws in place to force companies to reveal actual and potential data leaks, such as Europe’s new data protection regime.

What is a Philosophical Razor?

Keep Calm and Use These Epistemological Principles

According to Wikipedia, in philosophy, a razor is a principle or rule of thumb that allows one to eliminate (“shave off”) unlikely explanations for a phenomenon, or avoid unnecessary actions.

Razors include:

Occam’s razor: Simpler explanations are more likely to be correct. Avoid unnecessary assumptions.
Grice‘s razor: As a principle of parsimony, conversational implications are to be preferred over semantic context for linguistic explanations.
Hanlon’s razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Hume‘s razor: “If the cause, assigned for any effect, be not sufficient to produce it, we must either reject that cause, or add to it such qualities as will give it a just proportion to the effect.”
Hitchens’s razor: “What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.”
Newton’s flaming laser sword: If something cannot be settled by experiment or observation, then it is not worthy of debate.
Popper’s falsifiability principle: For a theory to be considered scientific, it must be falsifiable.
Sagan standard: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Fixing the Web

Tim Berners-Lee has a plan to fix the web

The World Wide Web’s inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, has launched a way to make it easier for people to control their personal data. Will it take off?

The news:

Berners-Lee is working with people at MIT and beyond on a startup called Inrupt which runs an open source project, Solid, that hands you back control over your own data.

How will it work?

Decentralization and control are the guiding principles. Solid will let developers create decentralized apps that run on data fully owned by users. They decide where to store their data, and who to share it with. The first wave of apps being built on Solid is being developed now.

Good luck:

The plan is very ambitious. Its success will hinge on whether enough people adopt it beyond just hardcore techies. It’s well-timed in the week of Facebook’s breach though, and the fact it’s the brainchild of Berners-Lee can’t hurt either.
