Jackie Gerstein’s passionate thinking about learning is some of my favorite to read. She is rarely pulled down by trend or fad, but is unquestionably progressive and forward-thinking in her approaches to learning and thinking about learning.

She and I also share a passion: self-directed learning. (As does the original summarizer/author of the thinking embedded in table below, Lindy, McKeown Orwin).

I’m embarrassingly interested in any kind of learning at all–formal or informal, self-directed or teacher-centered, authentic or academic. Doesn’t mean I regard them all equally, but I do see a role for almost any system or approach that can cause, support, or glorify the processes of understanding.

Gerstein’s presentation, “Education 3.0 and the Pedagogy of Mobile Learning” uses the concept of mobile learning as a spearhead into a broader discussion of how people learn–different approaches, different domains, and different technologies.

We recently shared some thinking about what “Education 3.0” might mean as well, and are nauseatingly effusive in our praise of self-directed learning (And a primer on self-directed learning here as well.)

Assessment

With the progress of technology and the rise in mobile learning, now more than ever Self-Directed Learning–or Heutagogy–isn’t just possible, but natural, and almost awkward to not use, something Gerstein capture’s thoroughly and with her characteristic passion in the presentation below.

What is “SWARM” Learning?

SWARM INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINE

Swarm learning, or swarm intelligence, is how swarms of bees or birds move in response to their environment.

When applied to data there is “more peer-to-peer communications, more peer-to-peer collaboration, more peer-to-peer learning and that’s the reason why swarm learning will become more and more important as … as the center of gravity shifts” from centralized to decentralized data.

Medicine Example:

Consider this example,  “A hospital trains their machine learning models on chest X-rays and sees a lot of tuberculosis cases, but very little of lung collapsed cases. So therefore, this neural network model, when trained, will be very sensitive to what’s detecting tuberculosis and less sensitive towards detecting lung collapse.”

“However, we get the converse of it in another hospital. So what you really want is to have these two hospitals combine their data so that the resulting neural network model can predict both situations better. But since you can’t share that data, swarm learning comes in to help reduce that bias of both the hospitals.”

And this means, “each hospital is able to predict outcomes, with accuracy and with reduced bias, as though you have collected all the patient data globally in one place and learned from it.”

Moreover, it’s not just hospital and patient data that must be kept secure. What swarm learning does is to try to avoid or reduce the sharing of data, or totally prevent the sharing of data, to [a model] where you only share the insights, or you share the learnings.

So, that’s why it is fundamentally more secure.

Digital technologies will transform the health insurance business. Early adopters have started to implement new digital business models with initial success. A new report describes ten digital business models for health insurers that will disrupt the industry.

  5. Health insurers tech platforms license their technology for the management of health plans and members to their customers.
  6. On-demand insurance is a usage-based model that enables members to access desired health plans upon request with the help of a mobile app.
  7. High-risk patient preventive care model concentrates on insuring and managing potentially costly patient groups.
  8. The payer & provider collaboration model stands for a closer, digitally enabled partnership between payers and care providers, especially hospitals.
  9. The API health insurance model uses a list of pre-defined health insurance products accessible to websites and app providers via an application programming interface (API).
  10. Direct primary care model. Within this model, a care provider or a hospital act like a health insurance company using a monthly subscription model.

First implementations of these models indicate the positive impact that they have on the company evaluation, the ability to attract new members, the cost structure, and new revenue streams. Currently, the main impact of digital business models is on company evaluation, which reflects the hype that some companies have created in the investor community. Companies like Oscar, Clover Health, and Bright Health are valued at over $1 billion USD each after only a few years of operation.

Health insurers and start-ups from the USA and China are the most aggressive in adopting new digital business models. Companies from other regions tend to choose a follower approach or implement copycats.

ASSESSMENT

The report also profiles first-mover digital implementations. Profiles include their target groups, operating models, service offerings, and early evidence for success where available.
