  1. U.S. Death Rate Decreased by 42.9% From 1969-2013

    JAMA recently published an analysis on mortality in the U.S. from 1969-2013. Here are some key findings from the research:

    • Between 1969 and 2013, the death rate for all causes decreased by 42.9%.
    • The death rate per 100,000 for stroke decreased from 156.8 to 36.0, a 77% reduction.
    • Annual decline for heart disease slowed from 3.9% between 2000-2010 to 1.4% between 2010-2013.
    • The COPD death rate increased from 21.0 to 42.2, a 100.6% increase.
    • From 1969-2013, the cancer death rate decreased by 17.9%.
    • Age-standardized years of potential life lost per 1000 decreased from 1.9 to 1.6 for diabetes.
