Since 1993, the average lifespan of a person infected with HIV (after their initial diagnosis) has tripled, largely thanks to treatments like the “cocktail.” However, with the cost of such drugs ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 per year for each person taking them, scientists are still on the hunt for a cure.

Assessment

Recent research may have uncovered a potential treatment that could cure HIV through stem cell research. Here, you will find out how this cure works along with other information on one of the most infamous STDs of all time.

HIV is devastating poor and minority communities

The HIV pandemic in the US has developed a stable appearance over the last few years, and that appearance is notably non-white and non-wealthy. But, when the pandemic was discovered nearly thirty years ago, it was—in the US—primarily a disease of gay men.

    Dear ME-P and Friends,

This has been a year of change and growth for AID Atlanta. The one constant has been our ability to provide free HIV testing, education and outreach programs, medical care and client case management services to thousands of people annually for the past thirty-one years. Now more than ever, we need those services to continue.

When it comes to HIV, Georgia, and especially the metro Atlanta region, suffers from extraordinarily high rates of HIV prevalence and transmission. In 2009, 25 of the 48 U.S. counties with the highest prevalence of the disease were in Georgia. Just minutes south of our state capitol and nestled in the shadow of the Georgia Dome, the zip codes 30310 (3.2%) and 30314 (3.5%) have average HIV prevalence rates that rival or exceed those of countries that provide little to no access to health care for many of its citizens. Those neighborhoods have around three times the rates of Haiti (1.1%) and Thailand (1.2%). They top the rate of Rwanda (2.9%) and rival Nigeria’s rate (3.7%). And nearly 70% of Georgians living with HIV/AIDS live here in the Metro Atlanta area; they are our friends and neighbors.

Though we receive a good portion of our budget from Federal Ryan White funds and some state and local grant programs, none of our more than 20 programs are fully funded from a single grant. In addition, we know that more cuts are coming due to sequestration and changes in funding due to the Affordable Care Act. We have to make up the gap in order to continue the essential services we provide for people in need. Between now and the end of the year we must raise an additional $50,000 in individual gifts.

    DONATE HERE: https://www.aidatlanta.org/2013-year-end?erid=1172486&trid=412eea2a-fde3-41bb-8984-2019a0024ef0

We need your support to meet our goals.

    AIDS Outbreak
[The Irony of Public Health Week 2015]

More than 100 people in southeastern Indiana have tested positive for HIV in an outbreak linked to the sharing of intravenous needles. And, public health officials are trying to combat unfounded fears among drug users that they could be arrested if they take part in a needle-exchange program created to stem the spread of the virus.

The state’s Joint Information Center said there had been 95 confirmed HIV cases and 11 preliminary positive cases tied to the outbreak as of Thursday. That’s up from last week’s 84 confirmed HIV cases and five preliminary positive cases.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/rural-indiana-countys-hiv-outbreak-tops-100-cases/ar-AAaIIfk?ocid=iehp

All of those cases have been linked to needle-sharing among intravenous drug users, most of whom injected a liquefied form of the prescription painkiller Opana.
