Reforms under the Affordable Care Act have brought an end to some of the worst abuses of the insurance industry. These reforms have given Americans new rights and benefits, by helping more children get health coverage, ending lifetime and most annual limits on care, allowing young adults under 26 to stay on their parent’s health insurance, and giving patients access to recommended preventive services without cost.

Other Benefits

Many other new benefits of the law have taken effect, including 50% discounts on brand-name drugs for seniors in the Medicare “donut hole,” and tax credits for small businesses that provide insurance to employees. More rights, protections and benefits for Americans are on the way through 2014.

  1. Essential Benefits Under The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

The health system reform law requires plans in state health insurance exchanges to offer general categories of medical services and items, but it leaves it up to the Dept. of Health and Human Services to determine how much more specific the underlying essential benefits package should be. Here are the categories:

    Ambulatory patient services
    Emergency services
    Hospitalization
    Laboratory services
    Maternity and newborn care
Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment
Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
    Prescription drugs
Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices

  5. Pros and Cons of the Healthcare Reform Law

The political battle over Medicare’s future should concern any financial adviser [FA] helping clients plan for the cost of health care in retirement.

  6. AMA Reconsiders its Support of Key Part of Health Law

A divided AMA will consider withdrawing its support of a key tenet of the health overhaul law that requires Americans to purchase an insurance plan. The AMA is being asked by several medical societies within the organization to change its stance in favor of the “individual mandate.”

A formal vote comes up at the AMA’s annual policymaking House of Delegates meeting.

  7. Pennsylvania Court Delivers Another Blow to Obama Health Law

The individual mandate portion of the Obama health law, which would require Americans to purchase a minimum level of health insurance starting in 2014, suffered another legal defeat today as a federal judge in Pennsylvania struck down the plan – and added another new voice to the legal battle.

“The power to regulate interstate commerce does not subsume the power to dictate a lifetime financial commitment to health insurance coverage,” wrote Judge Christopher Conner.

  9. Reform Law is Biggest Threat to Medicare, Ryan

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) energized the crowd at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday when he said the greatest threat to Medicare is the 2010 healthcare law that has become the hallmark legislation of the Obama administration. “Obamacare comes to more than 2,000 pages of rules, mandates, taxes, fees, and fines that have no place in a free country,” the GOP’s vice presidential nominee told an audience that erupted in cheers and applause.

As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan drafted budgets for fiscal years 2012 and 2013 that include plans to overhaul the nation’s federal healthcare entitlement programs through a premium-support model for Medicare and block grant payments to states for Medicaid. Both of those ideas have become a part of the GOP’s official party platform, which was released Tuesday.
