This spit test promises to tell couples their risk of passing on common diseases
The proposition: A new startup called Orchid is offering the chance for couples planning a pregnancy to learn their odds of passing on risks for common conditions like Alzheimer’s, heart disease, type 1 and 2 diabetes, schizophrenia, and certain cancers to their future child. While existing pre-conception tests can identify certain rare single-gene disorders, like cystic fibrosis, Orchid’s looks at far more common diseases that are influenced by some combination of multiple genes, often numbering in the hundreds.
The problem: Many experts think polygenic risk scores aren’t yet ready for prime time, and they worry that companies like Orchid may be overselling the technology to anxious couples.

A jury has convicted Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes on four counts of fraud on their seventh day of deliberations. She was acquitted on another four, and there is no verdict on the remaining three counts.
