  1. 7.91% of Health Spending Went Toward Obesity-Related Illness in 2015

    Clinical Chemistry recently published a study measuring healthcare spending on obesity-related illness. Here are some key findings from the report:

    • 6.13% of total US medical expenditures were for obesity-related illness in 2001.
    • In 2015, 7.91% of US health spending went toward obesity-related illness.
    • From 2001-2015, 8.23% of Medicaid spending was devoted to obesity-related illness.
    • In New York, 10.9% of Medicaid spending was devoted to obesity-related illness.
    • Kentucky and Wisconsin devoted over 20% of Medicaid spending to obesity.
    • Spending on obesity-related illnesses increased 29% from 2001-2015.
