   A French-American duo shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in physics today for inventing methods to observe the bizarre properties of the quantum world — research that has led to the construction of extremely precise clocks and helped scientists take the first steps toward building superfast computers.

   The winners were Serge Haroche of France, and American David Wineland, who opened the door to new experiments in quantum physics by showing how to observe individual quantum particles without destroying them.

   Americans Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka won the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry today for studies of protein receptors that let body cells sense and respond to outside signals.

    2020 Medicine Laureate Charles Rice received his Nobel Prize at the Residence of the Swedish Consul General in New York. Rice was awarded the Medicine Prize “for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus.”

    Emmanuelle Charpentier was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work on CRISPR/Cas9, a tool used to edit genomes.

    Two scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 that were critical in slowing the pandemic — technology that’s also being studied to fight cancer and other diseases.

    Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman were cited for contributing “to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health,” according to the panel that awarded the prize in Stockholm.
