On eMRs – Just Go for IT
Neil Versel, a frequent contributor to FierceEMR, posted an article titled “CCHIT’s Leavitt: Don’t wait for final rules to proceed with EHR.”
Half-Baked Ideas
Even though many states are spending eHR stimulus bucks as fast as they can on half-baked, expensive ideas that enrich HIT stakeholders, most physicians and most all dentists are delaying investing tens of thousands of dollars in HIT fantasy until HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius gets her act together. Sebelius is in way over her head. She hasn’t even settled on the definition of “meaningful use” for crying out loud.
Soon to Be Former CCHIT Leader
Foot-dragging upsets the soon to be former head of CCHIT Dr. Mark Leavitt. He says doctors should put caution aside and just go for it.
“We believe that it’s risky for providers to wait until all the federal rules are final. If you wait to purchase an eHR until the rules are final and the accreditation process for certifying bodies is complete, I will put my reputation on the line and say that you will not achieve meaningful use in 2011.”
Assessment
So, Dr. Leavitt, even as you are no longer wanted at CCHIT and are leaving in less than six weeks, you promise American doctors that your reputation is like (stimulus) money in the bank. Will you co-sign loan agreements? Talk is cheap, Dude.

Darrell and Mark,
Now … the White House is calling for a Healthcare IT Task Force to implement goals of the HITECH Act across various government agencies. But, we don’t need it … “trust me.”

Dr. Jergus, there’s still one other bureaucracy that wasn’t mentioned in the InformationWeek article – The FDA.
Yesterday, Huffington Post Investigative Fund posted an article titled “FDA Considers Regulating Safety of Electronic Health Systems” by Fred Schulte and Emma Schwartz.
http://huffpostfund.org/stories/2010/02/fda-considers-regulating-safety-electronic-health-systems
“Concerned about potential safety risks in health information technology, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration may be moving closer to regulating the systems for the first time.”
It’s becoming more and more difficult to see how anything will get accomplished.

Branding and otherwise working the biggest
“Markets are conversations” – 1st of 95 Theses in “The Cluetrain Manifesto,” 2000.
A decade following the publication of the prophetic book by Levine, Locke, Searls and Weinberger, traditional US business leaders continue to underestimate the power of marketplace conversations.
Two days ago, I posted a branding-hot article titled “Peter Neupert and Alfred Spector are Bozos.”
http://community.pennwelldentalgroup.com/forum/topics/peter-neupert-and-alfred
When I recently googled “Peter Neupert,” my article with a playful title showed up as his 20th hit (second page), and for “Alfred Spector,” it came in as his 24th (third page).
Considering Neupert is very well known as Corporate Vice President, Health Solutions Group (HealthVault) at Microsoft, and Spector is equally famous as Vice President of Research and Special Initiatives at Google, I think the sudden, second-page popularity of my article shows potential for permanence.
I should point out that if you think I am treating shy Microsoft and Google leaders unfairly, whatever you do, don’t click on the link I posted. That could cause my opinion to move onto their first pages.

Meaningful Use Will Slow Docs Down – According to MGMA Survey
Meeting the 25 meaningful-use criteria required to receive the financial incentives contained in the federal stimulus law will result in reduced physician productivity, according to 67.9% of those who responded to a Medical Group Management Association [MGMA] member survey released March 4th. 2010
With one being “very easy” and five being “very difficult,” the survey also asked on a one-to-five scale how easy or difficult certain proposed requirements would be to fulfill. According to the 353 respondents (out of 445) who answered the question, the most difficult requirement would be using a certified electronic health record to provide at least 10% of all patients with electronic access to their health information within 96 hours of the information being available. That requirement received a 3.72 difficulty rating with only 14 respondents saying meeting the requirement would be very easy, 90 saying it would be difficult and 99 saying it would be very difficult.

Darrell,
I never did trust Mark Leavitt or CCHIT. But, the Certification Commission for Health IT just named Dr. Karen Bell, a former executive in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and an expert in improving health quality, as its chair, effective April 26th, 2010.
She replaces Leavitt, who retired after having led CCHIT since its inception in 2004.
Well, how about that!

Karen,
How do you feel about a former HHS official lobbying Congress on behalf of the HIT industry?
