Vote on Healthcare Reform

A ME-P Healthcare Reform Opinion Poll

By Ann Miller; RN, MHA

[Executive-Director]

According to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, the public has soured on President Barack H. Obama’s health care reform plan.

In fact, former Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean MD told Vermont National Public Radio:

“This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. And, honestly, the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill and go back to the House … You have the vast majority of Americans want the choices, they want real choices. They don’t have them in this bill. This is not health care reform and it’s not close to health care reform.”

Now, as an informed ME-P reader, do you think healthcare reform overhaul is a good idea?

  1. Speaking of Reform …
House Okays Bill Delaying Doctor Pay Cuts

The House voted 395-34 to approve a fiscal 2010 defense appropriations bill that includes a measure to stave off Medicare physician payment cuts until March 2010.

Various proposals in the House and Senate seek a more permanent fix to Medicare’s sustainable growth-rate, or SGR, formula, which is based on the economy’s health and has threatened payment cuts to physicians every year since 2003.

Physicians, however, aren’t banking on any of those proposals getting approved before Jan. 1, the date when their Medicare payments are expected to get cut by 21.2% under the SGR formula.

  2. Healthcare Reform?

This poll is very illustrative as Senator Ben Nelson just agreed to provide the 60th and deciding vote for sweeping health care legislation in the Senate.

This, capped a year of struggle and a final burst of deadline bargaining on President Barack H. Obama’s top domestic priority; healthcare.

Now, what happens to these politicians when the voting public finds out that nothing happens for three years … do tell?

  3. Obama Calls For Bipartisan Policy Summit

President Barack Obama underscored a push for a bipartisan solution to health reform, setting a Feb. 25 date for a policy summit with Democrats and Republicans alike in an effort to break a legislative impasse on Capitol Hill.

The olive branch to the GOP comes after Democrats lost their so-called “supermajority” vote in the Senate—the 60 seats needed to overcome a filibuster—and follows remarks the president made over the weekend where he pledged to push ahead with reform legislation that has been in limbo since the beginning of the year.

“So just in case there’s any confusion out there, let me be clear, I am not going to walk away from health insurance reform,” Obama said during a speech made before the Democratic National Committee on Saturday.
