Thousands at Risk from Needle Contamination
[By Staff Reporters]
According to Derek Shore of Veterans Today, on February 7, 2009, the Army Medical Center announced that 2,114 diabetic patients treated at the hospital may be at risk for contracting blood-borne illnesses.
Improper Insulin Injections
Hospital administrators reported to local station, KFOX, that diabetic patients at the hospital were being injected with insulin improperly. A medical injection pen was being used on more than one patient. Even though the needle was changed with each patient, there are fears the insulin reservoir may have contained diseases from past patients, which has sparked the fear of contamination.
Assessment
Doctors said the patients could be at risk of being given blood-borne diseases from August 2007 until Friday, February 6, 2009.
William Beaumont Army Medical Center has set up a toll-free hotline at 1-866-770-0194.

Medical Workplace Violence
Are we almost blasé in attitude about it? Want the recent evidence?
A Boston cardiac surgeon was mortally wounded by a gunman at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in January 2015. Dr. Michael Davidson, of Wellesley, was shot twice at a cardiac center after a man demanded to see him. The 44-year-old Davidson died despite frantic efforts of co-workers to save him. The shooter, who turned the gun on himself and committed suicide in an examining room, had some kind of previous relationship with the doctor, and was identified as Stephen Pasceri, 55 of Millbury, MA. Dr. Davidson, a Yale graduate, had worked at the hospital since 2006 and was an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.
Yet, during Super Bowl week pre-game preparations, the local and national attention seemed only to be riveted on accusations that Coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots football team deliberately deflated 11/12 of the footballs used in the division championship game.
