Unnecessary antibiotic prescribing is particularly common at urgent care centers, according to a new study. In these settings, nearly half of patients who were diagnosed with a respiratory condition that should not be treated with antibiotics (e.g. allergies, flu) were prescribed antibiotics. Antibiotic overuse is contributing to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making antibiotics less effective for those with serious infections.

All parts of the health care system need to work together to promote responsible antibiotic use. A recent NIHCM webinar explored strategies for collaboration—including a stewardship program to identify health care providers with inappropriate prescribing patterns.
