How Readers of the ME-P Can Assist
By Ann Miller RN MHA
[Executive Director]
If you want to help those hurt by hurricane Sandy, you may donate to the American Red Cross via text message, as well as by phone or online.
AMERICAN RED CROSS
The Red Cross is providing shelter, clothes, supplies, food and blood, as needed, for the victims of Sandy. You can donate blood, but in terms of items, you’ll be doing more for those in need by donating money instead of physical goods.
Text message: Text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. As in the case with other donations via mobile, the donation will show up on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your balance if you have a prepaid phone. You need to be 18 or older, or have parental permission, to donate this way. (If you change your mind, text the word STOP to 90999).
Phone: 800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767); for Spanish speakers, 800-257-7575; for TDD, 800-220-4095.
To donate blood: Visit this Red Cross Web page.

Ann,
I just made my donation; and encourage all ME-P readers to do same.

Dr. Marcinko,
I just read this notice from the ARC:
“The American Red Cross appreciates the support from the Romney campaign and is working with the campaign to process this donation of supplies. We are grateful that both the Obama and Romney campaigns have also encouraged the public to send financial donations to the Red Cross. We encourage individuals who want to help to consider making a financial donation or making an appointment to give blood.”
It seems that charitable minds think alike.

Hurricane Sandy Prompts Charitable Giving
The Charitable Giving Coalition is a group of over 40 charities that is encouraging Washington to support philanthropy. Following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, particularly in New Jersey and New York, the coalition praised the willingness of the American people to support relief efforts in the devastated areas.
Many relief organizations are participating in the effort to restore services after Hurricane Sandy. These include the United Way, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, the New York and New Jersey Community Foundations along with hundreds of other relief organizations. Many of these have created “Sandy Relief Funds.”
One of the leaders of the Charitable Giving Coalition is Father Larry Snyder. He noted, “America is at its best when it comes together in response to a crisis or to help others in need. There is no better example to demonstrate that can-do, giving spirit than during a national disaster like Hurricane Sandy.”
The Charitable Giving Coalition has also responded to proposals by President Obama and former Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney to limit itemized deductions. The proposed limits by both the President and candidate Romney could impact charitable deductions.
In the view of the Charitable Giving Coalition, a limitation on deductions “will have a devastating impact on charities and nonprofits.”
The coalition is sponsoring “Protect Giving-D.C. Days” on Dec. 4-5, 2012. Leaders of nonprofit organizations from throughout the country will be meeting with Members of Congress on both days to emphasize the importance of supporting charitable giving as the “fiscal cliff” tax and budget solutions are developed.
