Hi Dr. Marcinko and all ME-P Readers

I hope you are doing well. I am hosting a poll about RECs on my blog at: http://www.softwareadvice.com/articles/medical/five-reasons-we-think-recs-are-reckless-1092310/#survey

I’m hoping to get as many participants as possible to make this a meaningful survey. I’d really appreciate your help spreading the word to your ME-P membership.

Digital White e-Paper

The poll coincides with an article I wrote on “5 Reasons We Think Regional Extension Centers are RECkless.” I’m excited to see progress of HITECH Act initiatives, but I’m skeptical that throwing money at the problem will lead to efficient and successful adoption of EHRs.

Assessment

It would also be interesting to read any anecdotes you might have about Regional Extension Centers. Please let me know what you and your readers think:

  1. Eight months have passed since the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) began funding Regional Extension Centers (RECs). Sixty RECs have been created, $662 million has been awarded and electronic health record (EHR) software negotiations are under way.

These steps mobilize the ONC’s mission to help 100,000 priority primary care providers become “meaningful users” of EHRs by 2011. It also advances President Obama’s goal to improve quality and efficiency of health care using technology (as outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009).

However, there is a lot of debate over RECs and if they will be able to deliver on their mission. Software Advice is hosting a poll on this very topic at:

    http://www.softwareadvice.com/articles/medical/five-reasons-we-think-recs-are-reckless-1092310/#survey.

They’re asking health IT insiders, medical professionals and bloggers to weigh-in. Be sure to cast your vote.

Of Train RECs … As RECs get up and running, some observers are still wondering about them?

  3. Hi Dr. Marcinko,

I just wanted to send over a quick update about our poll on RECs. I tallied up the results today and published a summary on my blog at:

    http://www.softwareadvice.com/articles/medical/five-reasons-we-think-recs-are-reckless-1092310/.

We received a total of 87 responses in our poll asking “Will Regional Extension Centers Deliver on their Mission?” 62 respondents answered no and another 25 answered yes. While not a huge turn out, we did receive a lot of great comments. I listed all 52 comments in a Google Doc that you can access from my blog post.

Check out the summary post if you get a chance, and feel free to use any of our findings on the Medical Executive-Post blog at http://www.HealthcareFinancials.com

    Thanks,
    Houston

  4. HS’ ‘Mystery Shopper’ Project to Launch in Fall?

Pending approval of the project by the White House Office of Management and Budget, the HHS “mystery shopper” physician availability project should launch around August or early fall, according to Sherette Funn-Coleman in the HHS Reports Clearance Office.

The project will consist of making two calls to 4,185 primary-care physicians, with one call made by someone pretending to have private insurance and another by someone pretending to be a publicly insured patient. The plan is to contact 465 physician offices in each of these nine states: Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

Is this an office wreck in the making?

  5. Update

The Obama administration said yesterday that it had shelved plans for a survey in which “mystery shoppers” posing as patients would call doctors’ offices to see how difficult it was to get appointments. The decision, after criticism from doctors and politicians, represents an abrupt turnabout.

So, it seems you were correct, Mary.
