AMGA 2016 Survey Reports Average Increase in Physician Compensation at 3.1%
74% of specialties saw increases in compensation. AMGA announced findings from its 2016 Medical Group Compensation and Productivity Survey, conducted by its
consulting arm AMGA Consulting.
Findings show that 74% of physician specialties experienced increases in compensation. The overall weighted average increase in 2015 compensation was 3.1%, similar to 2.8% from 2013 to 2014:
• Primary care specialists saw an increase of 3.6%, up from a decrease of 0.3% in 2014 (weighted average).
• Other medical specialties saw an average increase of 3.0%, comparable to 3.2% in 2014.
• Surgical specialties saw an average increase of 3.6%, up from 2.0% in 2014.
Specialties experiencing the largest increases in compensation in 2015 were Emergency Medicine (9.6%), Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery (8.1%), Cardiology (6.9%), and Hypertension and Nephrology (6.7%). Data represent responses from 260 medical groups (a 3% increase from last year’s survey), representing more than 92,000 providers (a 26% increase).
The data are representative of large multispecialty medical groups and integrated health systems.

Physician Pay Increased in 2017 as Demand Grew: Study
Physician compensation across the country grew 5.1% in 2017 as increased demand put pressure on labor markets, according to a new study from Doximity, a social network for physicians and advanced practice clinicians. By studying physician job opportunities and compensation data, the report found significant job advertisements and compensation growth, analyzing 20 of the largest metropolitan areas and 15 common medical specialties.
Drawn from a sample of more than 12,000 physician job advertisements nationally, the report details the parts of the country and which medical specialties have the highest demand for physicians. Compensation growth was drawn from 40,000 self-reported compensation surveys.

Oh no!
Optum (UnitedHealthcare) is ‘scaring the crap out of hospitals’ w/8,000 more physicians than Kaiser, To date, the health insurance giant’s physician arm, OptumCare, employs or is affiliated with about 30,000 physicians. If OptumCare completes its acquisition of Davita Medical Group, the insurer will tack on another 17,000 physicians to its ranks — making it one of the largest physician employers in America.

Less-Experienced Physicians Have More Interest in Group Employment
PwC recently released an analysis of their Health Research Institute clinician survey for 2018. Here are some key findings on physician employment preferences from the report:
• 82% of physicians with <10 years experience are interested in single-specialty groups.
• 3 in 4 physicians with <10 years experience are interested in multi-specialty groups.
• 79% of physicians with <10 years experience are interested in hospital employment.
• 3 in 4 physicians with 10+ years experience are interested in single specialty groups.
• 58% of physicians with 10+ years experience are interested in multi-specialty groups.
• 64% of physicians with 10+ years experience are interested in hospital employment.
