Americans pay double for prescriptions

Researchers at Harvard Medical School say that prescription drug costs occupy nearly one-fifth of American healthcare spending.

Half of Americans Misused Their Prescription Medications in 2016
Quest Diagnostics recently analyzed test results from patients on prescription medications. Here are some key findings from the report:
• 52% of Americans misused their prescription medications in 2016.
• In 2011, 63% of test results were inconsistent with a physician’s orders.
• More than 20% of opioid tests were positive for opioids and benzodiazepines.
• 10% were positive for both opioids and alcohol
• 1 in 5 specimens positive for heroin in 2016 was also positive for non-prescribed fentanyl.
• The inconsistency rate for adolescents dropped from 70% to 29% from 2011-2016.
