Healthcare Spending Growth Expected to Pick Up This Year to 5.6%
The economy’s lackluster recovery eroded wages and left millions chronically unemployed. It also offered significant relief from the fiscal distress of U.S. health spending. Now, spending fueled by the improving economy and the healthcare reform law’s insurance and Medicaid expansions are likely to turn that around.
Health expenditures grew 3.6% last year, with the delayed and soft recovery a primary cause, according to projections by CMS actuaries published online by the journal Health Affairs. If the projection is confirmed later this year, it would mark the fifth straight year of growth below 4% and the second time in three years that national health spending growth dipped to a historic low.

Scary [Could be a game changer for EHRs nationwide]
I am waiting for the feds to concede that millions of Americans’ PHI were indeed exposed – in spite of the initial official explanation that just because malware was successfully installed into Healthcare.gov computers doesn’t mean they meant harm to anyone.
Give it a day or so.
What’s more, coming on top of the recent Community Health Systems’ loss of 4.5 million patient records, this could be a turning point in Americans’ patience.
In my efforts, I’ve noticed that online HIT defenders are disappearing like cockroaches.

New Health Benefit For Temporary Federal Employees May Violate Federal Law
A new federal regulation would allow temporary federal employees to qualify for health coverage more quickly, but may violate current law which excludes temporary employees from receiving health benefits before one year of current continuous employment.
U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) sent a letter to Director Archuleta, head of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), expressing his concerns and raising questions of the legality with the proposed rule.

Government hackers try to crack HealthCare.gov
Did you know that the government’s own watchdogs tried to hack into HealthCare.gov earlier this year and found what they termed a critical vulnerability – but also came away with respect for some of the health insurance site’s security features.

Those are among the conclusions of a report just released by the Health and Human Services Department [DHHS] inspector general, who focuses on health care fraud.
