  2. MD Compensation

Independent physicians average $53,000 more per year in earnings than employed physicians, says a recent report on physician compensation by Medscape.

More than 24,000 physicians in 25 specialties responded to this year’s Medscape Compensation Report and described their compensation, number of hours worked, practice changes resulting from healthcare reform, and adaptations to the new health care environment. The disparity among primary care physicians (PCPs) is only $8,000, with self-employed earning more individual revenue than employed PCPs.
