I posted this on Sharecare Facebook a few minutes ago:

Sharecare, I was going to let it rest for a while, but it was brought to my attention this morning that there are others who have become interested in your EHR expert’s answer to this simple and increasingly important question:
Are electronic dental and medical records less dangerous or more dangerous than paper records? Why won’t you respond? Is it the advertisement dollars from Google Health that causes your rudeness to customers?

Dr. Oz himself finally opened the discussion on EMRs today. I’m happy to say that he didn’t over-state the benefits nor discount the dangers. But then, his safe response also offered very little useful information. To learn more, one must purchase a book for $15. (Link provided).

How much do Sharecare.com investors know about the ADA?
There’s not much going on in the dental community today. Slow-moving ADA officials who I would most like to engage in discussion concerning the dangers of HIPAA, EDRs and dental therapists are becoming increasingly harder to find aimlessly wandering around on the internet. Even ADA President Dr. Raymond Gist, who promised unprecedented openness on his watch, hasn’t been visible for months. It seems they are hunkering down even deeper.
At least the ADA has stopped wasting members’ money on public relations rip-offs. Press releases are worse than ineffective for the dues-supported professional organization. As much as I hate to encourage it, even silence from ADA leaders serves the profession better than the appearance of desperation, and is much cheaper.
2011 has been a frustrating year for the ADA Council on Communications. Because of lack of support from a few key command-and-control Board members – older dentists who are proudly clueless about social networks – the team had already failed to open the ADA Facebook as re-scheduled years ago. More recently, after admittedly rushing into a business partnership with Dr. Oz’s Sharecare.com, the ADA has discovered that finding vetted dental authorities who will agree to not stray from pre-approved talking points is proving much more difficult than anticipated in April. (See “ADA teams with Dr. Oz website, Sharecare.com,” ADA News, April 22, 2011)
http://www.ada.org/news/5738.aspx
As it turns out, the well-respected dental authorities the ADA had in mind to enlist to fulfill their business obligation to Sharecare.com aren’t stupid people. Contrary to at least one ADA official’s naïve assumption earlier this spring, nobody out here in the unsheltered world is likely to agree to be partially transparent on the internet – especially when such foolishness will inevitably lead to an embarrassing attempt to protect indefensible ADA policy that has never come under scrutiny… and it shows!
Preemptive censorship of ADA experts’ responses might be harmful to the community if it weren’t an absurd idea. Yet because of conflicts of interest, ADA leadership cannot tolerate even the simplest questions about EDRs on Sharecare.com any more than they would have been able to tolerate my questions on their own Facebook had they opened it on schedule.
I imagine by now lots of people know this … except for perhaps Sharecare.com investors.
The pressure has been building between epic forces of truth and fantasy in dentistry for years. And now, the ADA’s clueless leadership is paralyzed by self-preservation and already over a month late in delivering their end of the bargain to Dr. Oz – at least in part because of my insurmountable question: “Which is safer, paper or electronic dental records?”
Although this tiny, niche crisis is still way under the surface, don’t underestimate the financial significance of the widening fracture. Sharecare.com is a very young and fragile internet experiment in answering consumers’ questions for profit – funded by biased advertisers and overly-optimistic investors. As a matter of fact, just this morning I read this in the “Private Equity Beat” concerning Sharecare.com’s latest investor, Vision Capital:
“There’s a lot of celebrity packed into Vision Capital‘s latest deal, reports LBO Wire’s Beina Xu. The firm invested in New Evolution Ventures LLC, a developer and operator of health and fitness brands launched by Mark Mastrov, buying its entire portfolio of four gym chains and Sharecare, a question-and-answer website started by WebMD founder Jeff Arnold and Dr. Mehmet Oz.
The all-equity transaction was in the middle of Vision’s per-deal range of $50 million to $250 million. Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios and Dr. Oz own part of Sharecare. Other New Evolution assets include Hard Candy Fitness, a joint venture with Madonna of six gyms.”

Don’t you know a few big-name investors, including Oprah herself, will be pissed if the executive director is forced to back the ADA’s butt out of the Sharecare.com deal (just to avoid answering my simple question about EDR safety)?
