Military Health System Records

Expanding PHR Pilot Testing

By Staff Reporterscomputer-hardware2

According to Paul McCloskey, on April 08, 2009, the Military Health System [MHS] will extend its test of personal health records at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., to two additional health care venues in an attempt to test the technology in larger populations and more diverse care settings.

MiCare PHR Focus

The new projects will focus on using the MiCare Personal Health Record [PHR] as a tool for care coordination and a mechanism for patients to share health records across a mix of military and commercial providers and payer organizations, according to Col. Keith Salzman, chief of informatics at Madigan, which is hosting a pilot test of MHS’ MiCare PHR.

  2. Among the non-military groups taking the leap into eMRs and eHRs are Microsoft and Google. Both have launched products called Personal Health Records over the past 18 months. Microsoft Health Vault and Google Health, as they’re called, allow patients to store their own personal health histories online. Like all of their other apps, they are both free to consumers.

    Here’s how they work:

    1) You create an account (or sign in if you already have an msn or Google account)

    2) You enter and/or modify you health history and even upload data from devices like blood sugar meters.

    3) You can pull records in from medical centers, doctors’ groups or insurers that have agreements with the eHR Company.

Other private companies include: http://www.healthrecordcorp.com and http://www.medkaz.com from Merele J. Bushkin and Michael F. Epstein MD of the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

DOD’s first strategic health IT plan in a decade stresses “rapid, responsive, reliable” delivery of new services. What do you think?

  4. Health information interoperability efforts between the Veterans Health Administration and the Military Health System just suffered another setback, as the Department of Veterans Affairs cut off access to the Defense Department’s AHLTA EMR after VA officials found errors in medical records downloaded from AHLTA.

  5. Military Data Hacked

Hacking group Anonymous just reported it infiltrated a server belonging to military consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton and made available approximately 90,000 military email addresses online.

The hack was the second in the past week to target major companies doing business with the federal government.

That’s no lie. Just a couple of months ago, Tricare made identity information for 5.1 million people available. Tricare is in the broadcasting business.
