CMS, HHS and HQA Team-Up for New Website Tool
[By Staff Writers]
In the next initiative of the consumer empowerment and/or patient advocacy movement, it seems that the CMS, HHS and the HQA have just teamed-up to produce a new online tool to help patients compare inpatient services for selected procedures and populations.
Direct from the Website
Welcome to Hospital Compare. This tool provides you with information on how well the hospitals care for all their adult patients with certain conditions or procedures. This information will help you compare the quality of care hospitals provide. Talk to your doctor about this information to help you, your family and your friends make your best hospital care decisions.
Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Health and Human Services (HSS), and other members of the Hospital Quality Alliance: Improving Care through Information (HQA). The information on this website has been provided primarily by hospitals that have agreed to submit quality information for Hospital Compare to make public.
Assessment
The site is still a work-in-progress, but here is the latest direct link:

Hopefully, conditions and procedures will be added, and subspecialties like pediatrics will be included going forward.

Beware Physician Compare
[Medicare Site Inaccurate – Say Wronged Practices]
Doctors and other health professionals have been disheartened with what they’ve found out about themselves on Medicare’s Physician Compare website. Name misspellings, locality mistakes, and other errors have physicians questioning the integrity and accuracy of the information on the site and wondering if it can become a legitimate comparison tool for healthcare consumers.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services launched Physician Compare on Dec. 30, 2010. The agency did so after expanding its physician directory on the Medicare program’s website. The health system reform law required CMS to offer such a site to patients by 2011 and expand the site to include physician quality performance information by 2013.

Physician Compare Website Adds Quality Scores
The CMS is working to make its Physician Compare website more relevant to patients by adding quality measures related to the treatment of diabetes and heart disease for 66 group practices and 141 accountable care organizations. The move comes as consumer awareness of physician-rating websites is growing.
The quality scores were developed from data generated from the groups that participated in the CMS Physician Quality Reporting System’s Group Reporting Option and the ACOs participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program, according to a CMS fact sheet. These groups and ACOs also were given 30 days to review their data for accuracy.

CMS Adds Quality of Care Data on Docs to its Physician Compare Site
For the first time, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is putting quality of care data on individual physicians on its Physician Compare site.
In addition to launching a searchable database of individual healthcare professionals, CMS added new quality measures to Physician Compare for group practices and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). The measures focus on the quality of care provided by Medicare physicians and other health care professionals.
