76% of Opioid Prescriptions Are Written For 10% of Patients
Stanford University researchers recently analyzed opioid prescription trends. Here are some key findings from the report:
• More than 3 in 4 opioid prescriptions are written for 10% of patients.
• 59% of all opioid prescriptions go to just 5% of patients,.
• In 2001, 69% of opioid prescriptions went to 10% of people.
• 55% of prescriptions went to 5% of people in 2001.
• 100 million Americans prescribed opioids to cope with chronic pain.
• 142 people die every day from drug overdoses – a fourfold increase since 1999.
