Navy doc let his kids play with dead service member’s brain
A Navy medical examiner was reprimanded after he took the brain of a dead service member home and allowed his children to handle it while his wife photographed it.
Dr. Mark E. Shelly, who holds the rank of commander, was delivering the brain from Camp Lejeune, N.C., to the Portsmouth (Va.) Naval Medical Center, but on the way, he took the brain to his home in Virginia Beach. Shelly, who also held a part-time position with the Virginia medical examiner’s office, was fined $2,500 by the state’s medical board and lost his part-time job.

Shelly said in a letter that he realizes he used “extremely poor judgment” in this case, but he’s still stuck on active duty in an administrative role as he awaits further disciplinary action.

The truth about sex in the hospital
An excerpt from The Nurses: A Year of Secrets, Drama, and Miracles with the Heroes of the Hospital.
The outdated caricature of the sexy nurse — breasts straining buttons on a form-fitting white minidress, shapely legs slipped into white heels — remains pervasive and global.
Nurses say it also holds the profession back. What do you think?
