Comprehensive Financial Planning Strategies for Doctors and Advisors: Best Practices from Leading Consultants and Certified Medical Planners™

REQUEST FOR “MATRICULATION” PROPOSAL

  1. “You will be more able to talk-the-talk of the physicians if you have completed the CMP™ curriculum”

I was in favor of and still support the Certified Medical Planer™ curriculum … but just like any other academic curriculum, it is an “accretive academic” program rather than an instant “change of life” program. I use the material that I learned on a regular basis, but I cannot say that I use it every day.

Our firm Savant Capital recently hired a physician, Dr. Brian Knabe, MD as an advisor. He is leaving the medical field, transitioning out, and entering the field of the financial advisors. I have encouraged him and he has enrolled in this curriculum.

You will be more able to talk the talk of the physicians if you have completed the CMP™ curriculum. I would do it again!

Let me know if you wish to discuss this.

I would be happy to discuss the CMP® program with anyone interested. CMP® is a great program and worth every penny. It is just what I needed to focus my practice on physicians and has given me the confidence to be a better advisor for docs.

I just want to complete the program before you guys realize you are not charging enough! Please have him/her or them, call me.

  3. On CMP™ Program Rigor

“I will rank the designations I have earned or have made progress in earning”:

    1. CFA (really tough unless you work in securities valuation every day)

    2. CPA (this was a very tough exam and required a lengthy process of learning. However, I think that much of the CPA exam, when I took it, was rote-without a full understanding of the content)

    3. CFP® (this is a little more difficult than the CMP™ mainly because of the time constraints and structure of the exam. It is a little less difficult than the CPA because it incorporates some of the knowledge that CPA’s typically already possess)

    4. CMP™ – Certified Medical Planner™

    5. CLU (these exams were not very difficult but mainly required time and some limited reading)

    6. Securities Licensure (Series 7)

    7. Insurance Licensure.

  15. Hi John, et. al

I encourage pursuit of the Certified Medical Planner™ designation (I am not on the payroll)!

As you are already aware, by your own credentials, that the CMP™ designation is cumulative to your other professional designations … it makes you “more whole” for your advisory clients. It is especially helpful in the work with our physician clients, but it has been helpful for non-medical professionals too.

Let me know if you wish to discuss it.

  17. Healthcare is Changing

That’s why the R&D efforts of our governing board of physician-directors, accountants, financial advisors, academics and health economists identified the need for integrated personal financial planning and medical practice management as an effective first step in the survival and wealth building life-cycle for physicians, nurses, healthcare executives, administrators and all medical professionals.

Now – more than ever – desperate doctors of all ages are turning to knowledge able financial advisors and medical management consultants for help. Symbiotically too, generalist advisors are finding that the mutual need for extreme niche synergy is obvious.

But, there was no established curriculum or educational program; no corpus of knowledge or codifying terms-of-art; no academic gravitas or fiduciary accountability; and certainly no identifying professional designation that demonstrated integrated subject matter expertise for the increasingly unique healthcare focused financial advisory niche … Until Now!

Thank you for a great learning experience in the past year!

My goal in taking the CMP™ designation course was to become more knowledgeable, more aware, and more confident about financial planning issues as they relate to physicians. I also wanted to learn more about how and what physicians think about in relationship to money, their practice, and financial planning. I have accomplished that goal. I believe the 3 new physician clients I have picked up in the past 6 months were due in large part to the knowledge I have received from the CMP™ coursework.

I look forward to being able to make future posts on the iMBA executive post site. Hopefully you will post some of my submissions. You have built a great website!

I look forward to getting the sheepskin and proudly displaying it in my office. I look forward to spreading the good news about the CMP designation. Please don’t hesitate to refer me those that may be thinking about getting the designation.

  24. Our CMP Program

In 1972, Nobel Laureate Kenneth J. Arrow, PhD shocked academe’ by identifying health economics as a separate and distinct field. Yet, the seemingly disparate insurance, tax, risk management and financial planning principles that he also studied are just now becoming transparent to some medical professionals and their financial advisors. Despite the fact that a basic, but hardly promoted premise of this new wave financial planning era, is imprecision.

Nevertheless, to informed cognoscenti like Certified Medical Planners™, they served as predecessors to the modern physician-focused financial advisory niche sector.

In 2004, Arrow was selected as one of eight recipients of the National Medal of Science for his innovative views.

  27. Dear CMP Program,

My business partner and I are financial advisors for a comprehensive financial planning firm focused on serving physicians. We came across your CMP designation and are very interested.

Given we are a growing firm we would also have an interest of having current and future team members obtain the designation as well.

Our timeline is probably next year, but I have a few quick questions:

    1) When does the next semester for starting the CMP start next year? It’s too soon to do the Dec. 2nd start time.

    2) How many current CMP members are there?

    3) What kind of membership growth do you expect over the next few years?

    4) Do you plan to join FINRA’s designations list? Link: https://www.finra.org/investors/professional-designations

    5) To you have plans to get the CMP accredited by any organizations? e.g. http://www.finra.org/investors/accredited-designations
