My [Jaguar] Mechanic vs. Doctor Story

Join Our Mailing List

Everyone wants to be a doctor – or get paid like one!

dem21[By Dr. David Edward Marcinko MBA CMP™]

Most regular ME-P readers and subscribers know that I am a Jaguar automobile fan. Except perhaps for a Bentley or Rolls Royce, I think that Jags are the finest mass produced luxury vehicles on the planet.

Backstory

My regular car guy, Jimmie the mechanic, was removing a cylinder head from a late model Jaguar sedan when he spotted a world-famous heart surgeon in his garage; we have many such dignitaries on this side of town.

In fact, it is called “pill-hill” around here, for the many hospitals, medical clinics and physician offices. The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car.

The Query

Jimmie shouted across the garage, ‘Hey Doc can I ask you a question?’

The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to him.  Jimmie straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, ‘So Doc, look at this engine. I also can open hearts, take valves out, fix’em, put in new parts and when I finish this Jaguar will work just like a new one.’

Salary Comparisons

“So how come I work for a pittance and you get the really big money, when you and I are doing basically the same work?”

The MD’s Answer

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over and whispered into Jimmie’s ear: ‘Try doing it with the engine running.’

Of course this story is a classic; oft repeated ad nauseam.

  1. A doctor is complaining to a mechanic

Another doctor is talking to a car mechanic, “Your fee is several times more per hour then we get paid for medical care.”

“Yeah, but you see, doc, you have always the same model, it hasn’t changed since Adam.

But, we have to keep up to date with new models coming every month.”

  2. Jaguar Reliability

BUCK – Jaguar rated #2 out of 32 car brands for Quality (June of 2014).

“Porsche took the number one position, but Jaguar came in at second place in J.D. Powers and Associates just released new car quality survey, ahead of Lexus, Hyundai, Toyota, BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Infinity, Acura and many others. Let it be known, Jaguar is a higher quality car than most.”

  4. Rebooting the Car Dashboard

The world is rightly excited about the future of autonomous cars, but the passenger experience is also getting a technological overhaul.

An emerging trend at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas appears to be the injection of emerging technologies into the cockpit. BMW, for instance, is to use holographic technology to create a free-floating screen next to the steering wheel, allowing drivers to adjust controls by poking at a display made of light. Ford, meanwhile, has announced that it will drag Amazon’s smart assistant, Alexa, out of the home and into the automobile, allowing its cars to respond to requests for snack stops, weather forecasts, or music.

And Bose is applying its understanding of all things oscillating to create ride-smoothing seats that isolate passengers from uneven driving. But perhaps smartest is Nvidia’s plan to use the technology being built into semi-autonomous cars to make manual driving safer. The idea: use sensors to augment human perception of road conditions, with cues intelligently provided by detecting what a driver hasn’t seen.

Suddenly, a commute seems more tempting.
