Ayn Rand on Domestic Health Care

Right or Privilege? [The Beat Goes On!]

By Staff Writers

ME-P Eye

After watching the presidential debate last night, we were struck with two divergent opinions, on the status of domestic healthcare, from the candidates.

Barack H. Obama

Obama says healthcare is an American “right”.

John S. McCain

McCain opines that healthcare is a personal “responsibility”

Ayn Rand

The objectivist philosopher Ayn Rand opines thusly.

  1. More on Ayn Rand and Heathcare Politics

In this time of economic crisis, remember that Alan Greenspan’s moral mentor was Ayn Rand.

The above comment was released by the Ayn Rand Institute in 1993 as a comment on the Clinton Health Plan. In that speech, Rand denies that healthcare is either a right or an entitlement:

“Under the American system you have a right to health care if you can pay for it, i.e., if you can earn it by your own action and effort. But nobody has the right to the services of any professional individual or group simply because he wants them and desperately needs them. The very fact that he needs these services so desperately is the proof that he had better respect the freedom, the integrity, and the rights of the people who provide them.”

“You have a right to work,” she continues, “not to rob others of the fruits of their work, not to turn others into sacrificial, right-less animals laboring to fulfill your needs.”

    Additional thoughts are appreciated.

  2. Going Galt – Everyone’s Doing It!

The right wing has a new hero to lead the Tea Party revolts that Rick Santelli started … his name … John Galt. Yes, the same J.G. of Atlas Shrugged fame.

  4. Almost dentists

It will indeed be interesting to watch what becomes of the new expanded duty efforts in dentistry by this time next year that are being promoted in the name of healthcare reform.

If the popularity life cycle of digital dental records reveals anything about what we can expect from the euphoria bubble that’s inflating around cheap dentistry done by almost-dentists in hair and nail salons throughout the nation, I think we can expect that by this time next year, proud politicians will be speaking at almost-dental school graduations. After all, it’s only a 2 year course.

And if real dentists can do it, what’s to stop ambitious almost-dentists from giving collagen and Botox injections in under-served neighborhoods in Poteet, Texas as well as Indian reservations in Alaska?

Well-meaning dentists like me will be vehemently scorned when we describe painful reasons why just good enough isn’t good enough in dentistry for oh so many reasons. But nobody will listen. In fact, politicians will be praised for standing up against rich dentists and “the ADA dental union,” and will be reelected in 2010 because of the money they promise to save taxpayers in 2011.

So how do painful things end in the land of the free? Listen for what happens to the popularity of digital dental records in 2 months. And to think Newt Gingrich promised ADA leaders so much from HIPAA and eDRs!

We can lie to each other until someone gets bored and goes play golf. But ultimately, consumers will not be fooled. It’s hard to fake ADA mission statements and the Hippocratic Oath, especially in Poteet.
